Low-molecular-weight dextran sulfate prevents experimental urolithiasis in rats.

BACKGROUND: Low-molecular-weight dextran sulfate was tested on an experimental model of urolithiasis induced in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats weighing 250 g had a 15-mg calcium oxalate stone surgically placed into the bladder. A group was sham operated, another group was treated by daily intraperitoneal injection of low-molecular-weight dextran sulfate and the other by daily intraperitoneal saline injection. RESULTS: This treatment prevents the growth of exogenous calcium oxalate stone introduced into the bladder and also avoided the formation of secondary stones in the animals. In additio

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for urolithiasis. Experience with 3000 patients.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has dramatically changed the current therapeutic spectrum for urolithiasis and is currently the frontline modality for most upper tract calculi. We report our experiences of treating 3000 patients of urinary calculus disease with shock wave therapy on the Siemens Lithostar at our institution. There were 1350 patients with ureteric stones and 73 had vesical calculi. 20.2% patients had recurrent stones and 25.6% had associated medical disorders. The calculus size varied from 4-115 mm. 81 patients had coexisting congenital upper tract anomalies and 84

Atypical presentation of obstructing urolithiasis in a patient with a congenital pelvic kidney.

A congenital pelvic kidney is when the organ is located within the pelvis rather than its usual position in the retroperitoneal space of the lumbar region. They are often asymptomatic and therefore usually found incidentally. We present the case of a man in his 60s who presented to our emergency department with left iliac fossa pain and diarrhoea.Contrast CT scanning identified a left congenital pelvic kidney with an obstructing ureteric stone causing severe hydronephrosis. Following successful ureteroscopy, lithotripsy and ureteric stenting, the patient recovered and was discharged home. Alth

SGLT2 Inhibitors and Their Effect on Urolithiasis: Current Evidence and Future Directions.

Urolithiasis (UL) is increasingly prevalent due to rising cardiorenometabolic diseases, posing significant management challenges despite advances in urological techniques. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, primarily used for type 2 diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure, have emerged as a potential novel approach for UL treatment. These inhibitors may help reduce the risk of urolithiasis, particularly in patients with diabetes, by improving glycemic control and altering urinary chemistry, which are crucial factors in stone formation. However, the changes

Impact of Preoperative Ureteral Stenting in Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery for Urolithiasis.

Background and Objectives: Ureteral stent insertion passively dilates the ureter. Therefore, it is sometimes used preoperatively before flexible ureterorenoscopy to make the ureter more accessible and facilitate urolithiasis passage, especially when ureteroscopic access has failed or when the ureter is expected to be tight. However, it may cause stent-related discomfort and complications. This study aimed to assess the effect of ureteral stenting prior to retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS). Materials and Methods: Data from patients who underwent unilateral RIRS for renal stone with the use o

Combination of urolithiasis and anomaly: Bifid ureter with fusion in the intramural part.

Kidney and upper urinary tract anomalies account for 23% of all birth defects. Partial duplication is slightly more prevalent than complete, 70% and 30%, respectively. A very low fusion of ureters, i.e., in the intramural part, is a rarer case. As a result, the joint section is very short (<1 cm) and may be invisible for radiological diagnosis. This case shows a rare variation of incomplete bifid ureter coupled with urolithiasis, which should be taken into account by the physician when determining urolithiasis treatment.

Why we need a higher suspicion index of urolithiasis in children.

BACKGROUND: Most children with symptoms of urolithiasis and urinary solute excretion abnormalities leading to stone formation have no calculi revealed by ultrasound or X-ray plain film ("occult urolithiasis"). This covers a large group of children presenting with common symptoms such as abdominal pain, hematuria, and dysuria, often faced by general practitioners and pediatricians. However, half or more of children with urolithiasis could present with abdominal/flank pain without specific urinary symptoms. STUDY DESIGN: We review the current evidence about prevalence, clinical presentation, an

Urolithiasis analysis in a multiethnic population at a tertiary hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is a global problem whose incidence is reported to be on the rise across the world. Previously, urolithiasis was reported as being rare among the indigenous African population but recent data suggest otherwise. This study reviewed the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with urolithiasis seen at the Aga Khan University hospital Nairobi (AKUHN) as well as the chemical composition of the stones and the modalities of therapy used. METHODS: This was a retrospective study which utilized patients' clinical and laboratory records from 2013 to 2014. Sixty-sev

Urolithiasis risk: a comparison between healthcare providers and the general population.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare providers have many health-related risk factors that might contribute to urolithiasis: a heavy workload, a stressful workplace, and an unhealthy quality of life. However, the urolithiasis risk in healthcare providers is not clear. METHODS: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we identified 50,226 physicians, 20,677 pharmacists, 122,357 nurses, and 25,059 other healthcare providers as the study cohort and then randomly selected an identical number of patients who are not healthcare providers (general population) as the comparison cohort for this st

[DIAGNOSIS OF METABOLIC DISORDERS AND METAPHYLAXIS OF RECURRENT CALCIUM OXALATE UROLITHIASIS].

The paper presents the results of the 1-year screening of biochemical parameters of urine in female patient with recurrent calcium urate urolithiasis. Based on the data of quantitative X-ray phase analysis of the composition of stone and a complex of clinical and laboratory examination, reasons for recurrent stone formation were determined. The main reasons included hypocitraturia, hyperosmolarity of urine and uric acid diathesis. Therapy with citrate mixtures and adequate water schedule (daily urine--2-2.5 liters) for 10 weeks allowed to increase the urinary pH, led to 2.5-fold increase in da
