NGF and BDNF are differentially modulated by visual experience in the developing geniculocortical pathway.

Neuronal activity and trophic factors have been implicated in shaping the connectivity of functional synaptic circuits. We studied the development and regulation by sensory input of the neurotrophins NGF, BDNF and NT-3 in the developing rat visual system. In the occipital cortex, NT-3 mRNA was transiently expressed in the neonate. In contrast, BDNF and NGF mRNA's increased during postnatal development, and reached mature levels around 3 weeks of age. BDNF mRNA was ten times more abundant than NGF mRNA. In the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), NT-3 mRNA was also transiently expressed, whereas N

Visual pathway abnormalities in albinism and infantile nystagmus: VECPs and stereoacuity measurements.

The visual pathway of albinos is characterized by abnormal optic nerve fiber decussation with increased contralateral projection. This results in hemispheric asymmetry of monocular visually evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) and may be related to lack of stereopsis. Flash VECP, Random Dot E (RDE), and Titmus stereotest data were collected from 40 nystagmus patients, 19 albino and 21 with normal pigmentation. Data were compared with results obtained from 19 race- and age-matched normal subjects. All albino patients demonstrated hemispheric VECP asymmetries exceeding +/- 2.0 standard deviations

Patterns of edema in tumors vs. infarcts: visualization of white matter pathways.

The computed tomographic (CT) scans of 339 patients with recent nonhemorrhagic cerebral infarct and 155 patients with supratentorial tumors were reviewed to evaluate the appearance of cerebral edema. White matter pathway edema characterized the CT pattern in 106 (68%) of the 155 tumor cases. In these 106 cases, there were 143 tumors, with edema in the arcuate white matter (73%), the external capsule (33%), the internal capsule (12%) and the corpus callosum (14%). In contrast, only four of the 339 cases of infarct had edema in the white matter pathways. In addition, 260 (77%) of the infarct cas

High-density EEG microstates for functional evaluation of visual pathway in multiple sclerosis: a correlation study with visual evoked potentials.

OBJECTIVE: Visual pathway dysfunction is common in multiple sclerosis (MS). While visual evoked potentials (VEPs) remain the gold standard for assessing functional integrity, high-density EEG (hdEEG) microstate analysis offers insight into resting-state neural dynamics. This exploratory study aimed to evaluate visual pathway alterations in patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) through microstate analysis - particularly the visual processing microstate, Map-B - and to compare these findings with VEP parameters. METHODS: Twenty-two RRMS patients underwent hdEEG recording. Segmentation ana

When do asymmetrical full-field pattern reversal visual evoked potentials indicate visual pathway dysfunction in children?

Our study aimed to find out the association between full-field pattern reversal visual evoked potential (pVEP) transoccipital asymmetries and half-field pVEP transoccipital distributions in children. Over a six-month period, 46 patients (mean age: 9 years 9 months) had both monocular full-field and half-field pVEPs to test checks subtending 50 min of arc in a 35 degree full-field and 0-17.5 degree lateral half-field. Silver-silver chloride electrodes placed at Oz, O1 and O2 were referred to Fz. Monocular full-field data were categorised according to the degree of transoccipital asymmetry. Half

Aroclor 1254 impairs visual and neurosensory signaling pathways independent of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor in larval zebrafish.

Aroclor 1254 is a mixture of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners that are present in aquatic systems originating from coolants, solvents, plasticizers, and shipbreaking. Aroclor 1254 can induce an eye tremor response in early life stage zebrafish (Danio rerio) following exposure to between 22.7 and 4140 µg/L Aroclor 1254 at 102 h post fertilization (hpf), as shown in our recent study. However, the underlying mechanism that induces this response, either acting through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) or non-AhR pathways, is not well characterized. As such, transcriptomics, morphology, a

Standard automated perimetry for glaucoma and diseases of the retina and visual pathways: Current and future perspectives.

Static automated perimetry (SAP) remains a mainstay of functional assessment of the visual field in diseases of the visual pathway, such as glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The fundamental psychophysical task of responding to stimuli of different levels of contrast has remained minimally changed since its inception in the 1980s, and this is potentially the root of several unresolved issues involving the technique. Enduring issues include the optimisation of SAP parameters for maximising defect detection, the influence of subjective behaviour on the response, structure-function di

The anatomy of the callosal and visual-association pathways in high-functioning autism: a DTI tractography study.

There is increasing recognition that many of the core behavioral impairments that characterize autism potentially emerge from poor neural synchronization across nodes comprising dispersed cortical networks. A likely candidate for the source of this atypical functional connectivity in autism is an alteration in the structural integrity of intra- and inter-hemispheric white matter (WM) tracts that form large-scale cortical networks. To test this hypothesis, in a group of adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) and matched control participants, we used diffusion tensor tractography to compare t

Modulation of connectivity in visual pathways by attention: cortical interactions evaluated with structural equation modelling and fMRI.

Electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies have shown that attention to visual motion can increase the responsiveness of the motion-selective cortical area V5 and the posterior parietal cortex (PP). Increased or decreased activation in a cortical area is often attributed to attentional modulation of the cortical projections to that area. This leads to the notion that attention is associated with changes in connectivity. We have addressed attentional modulation of effective connectivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Three subjects were scanned under identical stimulus c

Neurotoxic effects of spirotetramat in zebrafish (Danio rerio): Brain injury, locomotor abnormalities, and altered visual-related pathways.

Spirotetramat, a broad-spectrum tetronic acid insecticide, is widely used in agriculture because of its high insecticidal efficacy. However, its intensive and prolonged use may result in environmental accumulation and potential risks to non-target organisms. Although previous studies have demonstrated that spirotetramat induces developmental, reproductive, and hepatic toxicity in zebrafish, its neurotoxic effects on the brain and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to systematically evaluate the neurotoxicity of spirotetramat in zebrafish and to expl

Visual toxicity of imidacloprid in zebrafish: Unraveling the pathways from ocular morphology to behavior via phototransduction dysregulation.

Imidacloprid (IMI) poses risks to aquatic ecosystems and exhibits visual toxicity to nontarget organisms. However, the underlying mechanism of its visual toxicity has not been fully elucidated. After exposure to IMI at the concentrations 10, 100, and 1000 µg/L for 4 or 21 days, the visual behavior of zebrafish larvae was first suppressed, followed by enhanced locomotor and visual activities as exposure prolonged. The eye development in zebrafish larvae was significantly disrupted. Structurally, the lens area of zebrafish larvae was reduced from 15.63 % to 50.21 % (4 days) and from 37.00 % to 4

Parallel pathways carrying direction-and orientation-selective retinal signals to layer 4 of the mouse visual cortex.

Parallel visual pathways from the retina to the primary visual cortex (V1) via the lateral geniculate nucleus are common to many mammalian species, including mice, carnivores, and primates. However, it remains unclear which visual features present in both retina and V1 may be inherited from parallel pathways versus extracted by V1 circuits in the mouse. Here, using calcium imaging and rabies circuit tracing, we explore the relationships between tuning of layer 4 (L4) V1 neurons and their retinal ganglion cell (RGC) inputs. We find that subpopulations of L4 V1 neurons differ in their tuning for

Alterations in somatosensory, visual and auditory pathways in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: an under-recognised facet of ALS.

BACKGROUND: While amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is widely recognised as a multi-network disorder with extensive frontotemporal and cerebellar involvement, sensory dysfunction is relatively under evaluated. Subtle sensory deficits have been sporadically reported, but there is a prevailing notion that sensory pathways may be relatively spared in ALS. METHODS: In a prospective neuroimaging study we have systematically evaluated cerebral grey and white matter structures involved in the processing, relaying and mediation of sensory information. Twenty two C9orf72 positive ALS patients (C9+ A
