INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 sequelae may persist for years, particularly in individuals who experienced critical illness. This longitudinal study aimed to assess lung function, voice, and their correlation in post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS) patients after intensive care discharge and evaluate the impact on general and voice-related quality of life (V-RQoL).
METHODS: Among the 284 patients who survived hospitalization at the University Hospital, 48 met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and participated in the study. Evaluations were conducted at an average of 4 and 8 months post-discharge and inclu

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to physical illness, mental health disorders, social problems, and ongoing societal conflicts that have not yet been entirely resolved. Among the inflammatory processes associated with the virus, organic otorhinolaryngologic diseases occurred, resulting in functional impairments such as voice disorders caused by laryngeal affections. This study focused on the subjective suffering caused by functional dysphonia during the pandemic in patients who had not been affected by COVID-19. The underlying assumption was that the overall pandemic situation would alter

OBJECTIVE: The vibratory source for voicing in children with dysphonia is classified into three categories including a glottal vibratory source (GVS) observed in those with vocal lesions or hyperfunction; supraglottal vibratory sources (SGVS) observed secondary to laryngeal airway injuries, malformations, or reconstruction surgeries; and a combination of both glottal and supraglottal vibratory sources called mixed vibratory source (MVS). This study evaluated the effects of vibratory source on three primary dimensions of voice quality (breathiness, roughness, and strain) in children with GVS, S

PURPOSE: A version of the "smoothed cepstral peak prominence" (i.e., CPPS) has recently been implemented in the program Praat. The present study therefore estimated the correspondence between the original CPPS from the program SpeechTool and Praat's version of the CPPS. Because the CPPS is the main factor in the multivariate Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), this study also investigated the proportional relationship between the AVQI with the original and the second version of the CPPS.
STUDY DESIGN: Comparative cohort study.
METHODS: Clinical recordings of sustained vowel phonation and co

Electrolarynx (EL) is a medical speech-recovery device designed for patients who have lost their original voice box due to laryngeal cancer. As a substitute for human larynx, the current commercial EL voice source cannot reconstruct natural EL speech under laryngectomy conditions. To eliminate the abnormal acoustic properties of EL speech, a supraglottal voice source with compensation of vocal tract characteristics was proposed and provided through an experimental EL(SGVS-EL) system. The acoustic analyses of simulated EL speech and reconstructed EL speech produced with different voice sources

Evaluation of 63 patients undergoing primary radiation therapy for treatment of T1 and T2 glottic carcinomas was undertaken to evaluate the success of primary treatment and to identify factors which might influence recurrence or voice quality. Twelve patients (19%) recurred following radiation therapy, with ultimate salvage in 11, for a 3-year survival rate of 98%. Voice preservation was achieved in 83%. Continued smoking after radiation therapy was associated with significantly greater risk of recurrence. Stage of tumor and anterior commissure involvement were not associated with increased re

PURPOSE: This study examined the relationship between voice quality and glottal geometry dynamics in patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD).
METHOD: An objective computer vision and machine learning system was developed to extract glottal geometry dynamics from nasolaryngoscopic video recordings for 78 patients with ADSD. General regression models were used to examine the relationship between overall voice quality and 15 variables that capture glottal geometry dynamics derived from the computer vision system. Two experts in ADSD independently rated voice quality for two separate vo

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis is a common clinical problem which frequently causes severe dysphonia. Various treatment options exist for this condition, with the type I thyroplasty being one of the more commonly performed surgical procedures for vocal rehabilitation. The Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) Measure is a validated outcomes instrument for voice disorders. This study measured the V-RQOL of patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis who had undergone a type I thyroplasty and compared these scores to those of patients with untreated and uncompensated unilateral vocal fold pa

BACKGROUND: The acoustic analysis of substitution voices presents significant challenges. Traditional acoustic indices often fail to provide reliable assessments due to the intrinsic irregular nature of these signals. The present study aims to evaluate the validity of various acoustic parameters, including Cepstral Peak Prominence Smoothed (CPPs) and the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI), alongside traditional measures such as Jitter (Jitt%), Shimmer (Shimm%), and Harmonic to Noise Ratio (HNR) for assessing the quality of substitution voices after open partial horizontal laryngectomy (OPHL).
