The diameter of the cone lens of the specular microscope was enlarged from its original size of 3.5 mm to 6.0 mm. We devised a standardized rabbit model of intraocular inflammation using heat-killed Staphylococcus epidermidis as the inducing organism. We applied this model to study the effects of (1) inflammation, (2) repeated antibiotic doses, and (3) surgical status of the eye on cefazolin levels in the vitreous cavity after intravenous administration. Cyclocryotherapy in the treatment of aphakic open-angle glaucoma (AO), aphakic angle-closure glaucoma (ACL), and neovascular glaucoma (NVG) was evaluated in 96 eyes of 96 patients. All patients had follow-up of greater than 12 months, with a mean of 29.0 +/- 2.1 months (+/- SEM). A controlled clinical study with random allocation of method of rehabilitation (lens implant or contact lenses) was designed for comparative outcome assessments. Sixty-one patients were included in the study: 31 patients randomized to lens implantation and 30 patients to extended-wear contact lens rehabilitation with early post-operative fitting. Major cataracts developed in 28 of 168 eyes during the six months after pars plana vitrectomy for complications of diabetic retinopathy. In only ten of these cases did the cataract influence the visual results. The visual acuities of the phakic and aphakic eyes six months after vitrectomy were almost identical. Rubeosis iridis occurred in 23% of the phakic eyes and 45% of the aphakic eyes, with the difference being related to the loss in the aphakic eyes of a protective barrier lens quality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the refractive error induced by intraocular administration of silicone oil (SiO) in dogs.
ANIMALS: 47 client-owned dogs evaluated for blindness secondary to retinal detachment.
PROCEDURES: -3-port pars plana vitrectomy with perfluoro-octane and SiO exchange (1,000- or 5,000-centistoke SiO) was performed in 1 or both eyes for all dogs (n = 63 eyes), depending on which eye or eyes were affected. Dogs were normotensive, had complete oil filling of the eyes, and were examined in a standing position for retinoscopic examination of both eyes (including healthy eyes).

AIM: To investigate changes in central corneal thickness (CCT) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in children after congenital cataract surgery, as well as risk factors associated with these changes.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of aphakic bullous keratopathy (ABK) management with combined PK, anterior vitrectomy, angle synechiolysis, and Artisan intraocular lens implantation.
