[Adult onset Niemann-Pick type C disease and psychosis: literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Niemann-Pick type C disease (NPC) is a rare hereditary disease, which psychiatrists do not face often in France. Indeed, only a couple of articles specifically describing the psychiatric-disorders in the adult form have been published. And for the most part, they were not written by psychiatrists. This comprehensive international literature review aims at providing knowledge on this disease to French psychiatrists. METHODS: To achieve this literature review, we used the "PubMed" search engine, looking for the following keywords: Niemann-Pick type C AND (schizophrenia OR psychosi

Progression in prediagnostic Huntington disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine rates of decline in individuals at risk for Huntington disease (HD). METHODS: 106 individuals at risk for HD completed a battery of neurocognitive, psychomotor and oculomotor tasks at two visits, approximately 2.5 years apart. Participants were classified as: (1) without the CAG expansion (normal controls, NC; n=68) or (2) with the CAG expansion (CAG+; n=38). The CAG+ group was further subdivided into those near to (near; n=19) or far from (far; n=19) their estimated age of onset. Longitudinal performance in the CAG+ group was evaluated with a repeated measures model wit

Dine in or take out dataset: user behavior in an interactive virtual reality café.

We present the Dine In or Take Out Dataset, a virtual reality dataset collected using a Meta Quest Pro, to understand how predominantly Gen Z individuals immersed in a virtual café opt to make the choice of dining in or taking food to go. In our dataset, participants completed four different treatments: no wait for maître d' with no wait for food, no wait for maître d' with 3-minute wait for food, 3-minute wait for maître d' with no wait for food, and 3-minute wait for maître d' with 3-minute wait for food, with treatment orders being randomized for each participant. Our dataset consists of 35

Using the Modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening Tool to Identify Blast Exposure Effects in Military Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Military service members training with heavy weapons systems are exposed to low-level blast (LLB) overpressure, sometimes resulting in acute symptoms similar to mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). There is a need for a quick and effective screening tool to identify early deficits and changes associated with blast exposure and minimizing potential ensuing effects. Recently, researchers developed the modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (mVOMS), designed to assess signs and symptoms of mTBI. modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening consists of four physical movement conditi

Comparison of Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) and Computerized Eye-tracking to Identify Exposure to Repetitive Head Impacts.

INTRODUCTION: Military service members (SMs) are exposed to repetitive head impacts (RHIs) in combat and training that are purported to adversely affect brain health, including cognition, behavior, and function. Researchers have reported that RHI from blast-related exposure may affect both vestibular and ocular function, which in turn may be related to symptomology. As such, an examination of the effects of RHI on exposed military SMs should incorporate these domains. To date, researchers have not compared groups of exposed special operations forces (SOF) operators on combined clinical vestibu

The neural correlates of social attention: automatic orienting to social and nonsocial cues.

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction. It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orie

Audiovestibular sequelae of congenital cytomegalovirus infection in 3 children presumably representing 3 symptomatically different types of delayed endolymphatic hydrops.

Three cases of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection with long-term audiovestibular sequelae are presented. Case 1 had no hearing in one ear and severe progressive hearing loss in the other ear; he showed vestibular symptoms at the age of 4.5 years. Case 2 had severe but stationary hearing loss in one ear and showed hearing impairment symptoms in the other ear at 9-13 years of age. Case 3 did not have hearing impairment symptoms, or vestibular symptoms, but was found to have severe progressive hearing loss from the age of 15 months onwards, which led to profound deafness at the age of 2 y

Temporal Changes in Fixational Eye Movements After Concussion in Adolescents and Adults: Preliminary Findings.

Concussions often involve ocular impairment and symptoms such as convergence insufficiency, accommodative insufficiency, blurred vision, diplopia, eye strain, and pain. Current clinical assessments of ocular function and symptoms rely on subjective symptom reporting and/or involve lengthy administration time. More objective, brief assessments of ocular function following concussion are warranted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in fixational eye movements (FEMs) and their association with clinical outcomes including recovery time, symptoms, cognitive and vestibular/ocular mot

Limbal fibroblast conditioned media: a non-invasive treatment for limbal stem cell deficiency.

BACKGROUND: To date, 43 types of Spinocerebellar Ataxias (SCAs) have been identified. A subset of the SCAs are caused by the pathogenic expansion of a CAG repeat tract within the corresponding gene. Ethnic and geographic differences are evident in the prevalence of the autosomal dominant SCAs. Few descriptions of the clinical phenotype and molecular genetics of the SCAs are available from the African continent. Established studies mostly concern the South African populations, where there is a high frequency of SCA1, SCA2 and SCA7. The SCA7 mutation in South Africa (SA) has been found almost ex

Gaze maintenance and autism spectrum disorder.

Chase is a 5½-year-old boy whom you have followed in your primary care practice since age 26 months. He was born full-term vaginal delivery weighing 6 pounds 15 ounces. His biological mother used heroin, tobacco, and cocaine during pregnancy. From 8 weeks to 18 months, he spent time in a foster home where he was provided limited attention and nurturing. At age 18 months, he entered a loving foster home; at 26 months, he was adopted. There is maternal history of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, learning disability, depression, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse but no history of aut

Hereditary progressive dystonia with marked diurnal fluctuation.

Hereditary progressive dystonia with marked diurnal fluctuation or the strictly defined dopa-responsive dystonia (HPD/DRD) is an autosomally dominantly inherited dystonia caused by abnormalities of the gene of the GTP cyclohydrolase I (GCH 1) located on the 14q22. 1-q22.2. The heterozygotic gene abnormality induces partial decrement of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) and affects synthesis of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) rather selectively. The reduction of TH exists at the terminals of the nigrostriatal (NS) dopamine (DA) neuron, predominantly in the ventral area of the striatum and disfacilitates the

Challenges in Gaucher disease: Perspectives from an expert panel.

This focused review concentrates on eight topics of high importance for Gaucher disease (GD) clinicians and researchers: 1) The consideration of GD as distinct types rather than a spectrum. A review of the literature clearly supports the view that there are distinct types of GD. Type 1 is characterized by the absence of primary neuronopathic involvement, while types 2 and 3 are characterized by progressive primary neuronopathic disease. 2) Neurologic and neuronopathic manifestations. A growing body of evidence indicates that the peripheral nervous system may be involved in GD type 1 and that t

Presenting signs and patient co-variables in Gaucher disease: outcome of the Gaucher Earlier Diagnosis Consensus (GED-C) Delphi initiative.

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease (GD) presents with a range of signs and symptoms. Physicians can fail to recognise the early stages of GD owing to a lack of disease awareness, which can lead to significant diagnostic delays and sometimes irreversible but avoidable morbidities. AIM: The Gaucher Earlier Diagnosis Consensus (GED-C) initiative aimed to identify signs and co-variables considered most indicative of early type 1 and type 3 GD, to help non-specialists identify 'at-risk' patients who may benefit from diagnostic testing. METHODS: An anonymous, three-round Delphi consensus process was depl

Improvement in Vision Parameters for Participants Treated With Alternative Therapies in a 3-day Program.

CONTEXT: Eye conditions that are considered progressive and degenerative and for which the causation is generally poorly understood or not understood within conventional medicine can respond to natural therapeutic interventions that result in arrest and/or improvement of morbidity, with enhanced functional results. Because many of the treated conditions are age related, a delay of disease progression for 5 or even 10 y can mean an additional decade of independence for seniors. The 11 included ocular conditions are ordinarily considered incurable by any method except surgery and, even with surg

Home-based eye tracking for early autism screening: a scoping review of approaches, evidence, and implementation challenges.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is essential for improving developmental outcomes but remains challenging due to diagnostic delays, subjectivity, and resource limitations. Eye-tracking offers objective indices of social attention and could improve access to early screening when deployed on consumer devices at home. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on home-deployable eye-tracking as digital biomarkers for early ASD screening, associated machine learning methods, and feasibility of real-world implementation. METHODS: Following the Arksey and O'Malley f
