The modified frisby stereotest.

BACKGROUND: The Frisby stereotest commonly is used in clinical practice to estimate stereoacuity. Assessment of the presence or absence of stereopsis is valuable particularly in toddlers because of the difficulties encountered in this age group with assessment of other aspects of visual function, such as monocular visual acuities. METHODS: The present study describes two modifications to the Frisby stereotest: 1) the introduction of a nonstereo practice plate; and 2) the use of an auditory "reward" for correct identification of the target. These modifications aim to increase the success rate

Hyperacusis in Cochlear Implant Users and Its Relationship With Tinnitus and Subjective Hearing Abilities.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperacusis is a disorder that occurs in up to 17% of the general population and is characterized by reduced tolerance to ordinary sounds that would not trouble most people. Between 80 and 90% of people with hyperacusis also experience tinnitus. The severity of hyperacusis and tinnitus symptoms varies from person to person, and both conditions can lead to negative psychosocial consequences, including mental health challenges and social isolation. Despite the high co-occurrence of tinnitus, hearing loss, and hyperacusis, clinicians and researchers have focused to date on hyperacusis

Role of platelet-rich plasma in management of sensorineural hearing loss diseases.

UNLABELLED: Sensorineural deafness is a form of loss of hearing. It happens from damage to the cochlea. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous management derived from a case's blood and was observed to have pro-nerve regenerative characteristics. Intratympanic injection of PRP improves the cells of the hair of the inner ear, therefore enhancing the hearing. OBJECTIVE: To show the effectiveness and safety of PRP in the management of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) diseases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 150 patients who had sensorineural hearing loss because of different otological diseases, s

Auditory Localization Skills of Adult Cochlear Implant Users: Self-Report Assessment Results.

OBJECTIVES: Auditory localization, an essential skill for survival and communication, enables individuals to identify the source of sounds in their environment. Hearing loss (HL) in one or both ears often disrupts binaural hearing mechanisms, compromising auditory localization abilities. This study aimed to compare auditory localization abilities among unilateral cochlear implant (UnCI) users, bimodal cochlear implant (BimCI) users, and individuals with normal hearing (NH). METHODS: This study included a total of 119 participants: 50 with NH, 46 UnCIs, and 23 BimCIs. The Auditory Localization

Serial recording of visual and somatosensory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) and short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded at frequent intevals in 7 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A persistent increase in latency of VEP was found to accompany evanescent visual symptoms. SEP, whether normal or abnormal, remained stable in patients without relapse. In 3 patients with active disease the cervical SEP was labile but this could not be related to specific clinical changes. In 51 patients VEP were recorded on two or more occasions at varying intervals. There was a reasonable correlation between alt

[Longitudinal studies in hearing-impaired children with Down's syndrome].

Over the past twenty years hearing impairment has become widely recognized as one of the most important problems in the children with Down's syndrome. We have continued longitudinal observations of the hearing and speech development of children with Down's syndrome during the 10-year period from 1982 to 1991. One hundred ten children with Down's syndrome were examined and followed in the Department of Otolaryngology, Teikyo University Hospital. The examinations included otomicroscopy, behavioral audiometry, auditory brain stem response audiometry and tympanometry. Questionnaires were also admi

Pbx1 overexpression delays cochlear hair cells degeneration in an accelerated aging mouse model.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), the most prevalent sensory disorder worldwide, arises primarily from cochlear hair cells (HCs) degeneration due to aging. Although the molecular mechanisms driving HC senescence are increasingly understood, effective treatments for ARHL remain lacking. This study explores the therapeutic potential role of Pre-B cell leukemia homeobox 1 (Pbx1), a transcription factor involved in inner ear development and pluripotency, in mitigating ARHL. Our results reveal a striking age-dependent reduction in PBX1 expression within mouse cochlear HCs. Using D-galactose (D-gal)/

High-Frequency TEOAE Amplitude Ratio Alterations in Newborns Exposed in Utero to Maternal SARS-CoV-2 Infection: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy has raised concerns regarding possible fetal consequences, including potential effects on auditory system development. Although the current literature suggests that overt congenital hearing loss is uncommon among newborns exposed in utero, subtle cochlear functional alterations may not be detectable through conventional threshold-based screening alone. The objective of this study is to investigate whether in utero exposure to maternal COVID-19 is associated with early cochlear fun

Role of harmonicity in counting and hearing out voices in polyphonic music: Effects of hearing loss.

Music plays an important role in many people's lives. While the effects of hearing loss on speech are well studied, its impact on music perception is less understood. To address this gap, the current study utilized polyphonic female vocal passages in an enumeration and a voice-tracking task to investigate how normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) listeners with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss perceive individual voices in polyphonic music. We hypothesized that hearing loss would hinder listeners' ability to distinguish voices in music due to impaired frequency selectivity,

Audiometric evaluation of bone conduction thresholds reveals subclinical sensorineural hearing loss in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing Loss (HL) has been increasingly recognized as a potential extra-articular manifestation in systemic autoimmune diseases, yet data on audiological involvement in Spondyloarthritis (SpA), particularly Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate bone conduction hearing thresholds in patients with AS and PsA compared to Healthy Controls (HC) and to investigate associations with clinical and inflammatory parameters. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) was used to assess bone

Clinical Prevalence and Impact of False Air-Bone Gaps in Clinical Audiometry: A Study of 1,000 Ears.

PURPOSE: Accurate hearing loss classification depends on air-bone relationships; however, "false" air-bone gaps (ABGs) in sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) frequently compromise diagnostic clarity. By shifting the focus from ABG magnitude to clinical prevalence, this study uses the prevalence of clinical ABGs (≥ 15 dB) as a primary metric to quantify diagnostic ambiguity in routine practice and to evaluate the efficacy of bone-conduction (BC) testing at frequencies where frequent false ABGs occur. METHOD: We retrospectively analyzed audiometric data from 1,000 ears (500 adults). The analysis

Auditory function in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may develop hearing and balance disorders as a result of the immune-mediated inner ear damage due to vasculitis or ototoxicity of drugs used in SLE treatment. The aim of the study was evaluation of the hearing organ disorders in patients with SLE with particular regard to their prevalence and relationship to duration and severity of disease. The severity was assessed from involvement of organs that resulted in poorer SLE outcome, i.e. kidneys and central nervous system (CNS), and from the presence of antibodies associated with unfavou

Altered Paired-Click Auditory Brainstem Responses in Normal-Hearing Young Adults With Frequent Loud Sound Exposure.

This study investigated differences in auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) using the paired-click paradigm between young adults frequently exposed to loud sounds and those not. Young adults with normal hearing were divided into two groups: an exposed group (n = 23), who were frequently exposed to loud sounds through music practice, and a control group (n = 21). Sound exposure levels (measured via smartwatch), hearing thresholds (0.125-16 kHz), distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) magnitudes, word intelligibility, and ABRs to single and paired clicks were obtained. For paired-click A

Interplay of age, speech perception in noise, standard and extended high-frequency hearing, and cochlear synaptopathy in individuals with normal audiograms.

Older adults often complain about having difficulty understanding speech in noise, despite clinically normal hearing (D-SiN-NH). Two otopathologies known to decline with age and that are not reflected in the conventional audiogram are extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing impairment and cochlear synaptopathy (CS), both hypothesized to be responsible for D-SiN-NH. Nevertheless, the influence of EHF deficits on Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) wave I amplitude, a commonly used proxy measure for CS, remains equivocal. Furthermore, the combined effects of age-related changes in peripheral auditor

Double Hyperautofluorescent Rings in Patients with USH2A-Retinopathy.

USH2A mutation is the most common cause of retinitis pigmentosa, with or without hearing impairment. Patients most commonly exhibit hyperautofluorescent ring on fundus autofluorescence imaging (FAF) and rod-cone dystrophy on electrophysiology. A detailed study of three USH2A patients with a rare pattern of double hyperautofluorescent rings was performed. Twenty-four patients with typical single hyperautofluorescent rings were used for comparison of the ages of onset, visual fields, optical coherence tomography, electrophysiology, and audiograms. Double rings delineated the area of pericentral
