Brain-Computer interface control of stepping from invasive electrocorticography upper-limb motor imagery in a patient with quadriplegia.

Introduction: Most spinal cord injuries (SCI) result in lower extremities paralysis, thus diminishing ambulation. Using brain-computer interfaces (BCI), patients may regain leg control using neural signals that actuate assistive devices. Here, we present a case of a subject with cervical SCI with an implanted electrocorticography (ECoG) device and determined whether the system is capable of motor-imagery-initiated walking in an assistive ambulator. Methods: A 24-year-old male subject with cervical SCI (C5 ASIA A) was implanted before the study with an ECoG sensing device over the sensorimotor

De Novo Brain-Computer Interfacing Deforms Manifold of Populational Neural Activity Patterns in Human Cerebral Cortex.

Human brains are capable of modulating innate activities to adapt to novel environments and tasks; for sensorimotor neural system this means acquisition of a rich repertoire of activity patterns that improve behavioral performance. To directly map the process of acquiring the neural repertoire during tasks onto performance improvement, we analyzed net neural populational activity during the learning of its voluntary modulation by brain-computer interface (BCI) operation in female and male humans. The recorded whole-head high-density scalp electroencephalograms (EEGs) were subjected to dimensio

Neuronal Activity Distributed in Multiple Cortical Areas during Voluntary Control of the Native Arm or a Brain-Computer Interface.

Voluntary control of visually-guided upper extremity movements involves neuronal activity in multiple areas of the cerebral cortex. Studies of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that use spike recordings for input, however, have focused largely on activity in the region from which those neurons that directly control the BCI, which we call BCI units, are recorded. We hypothesized that just as voluntary control of the arm and hand involves activity in multiple cortical areas, so does voluntary control of a BCI. In two subjects (Macaca mulatta) performing a center-out task both with a hand-held joy

Music and natural sounds in an auditory steady-state response based brain-computer interface to increase user acceptance.

Patients with total locked-in syndrome are conscious; however, they cannot express themselves because most of their voluntary muscles are paralyzed, and many of these patients have lost their eyesight. To improve the quality of life of these patients, there is an increasing need for communication-supporting technologies that leverage the remaining senses of the patient along with physiological signals. The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is an electro-physiologic response to auditory stimulation that is amplitude-modulated by a specific frequency. By leveraging the phenomenon whereby ASS

Brain-computer interface driven functional electrical stimulation system for overground walking in spinal cord injury participant.

The current treatment for ambulation after spinal cord injury (SCI) is to substitute the lost behavior with a wheelchair; however, this can result in many co-morbidities. Thus, novel solutions for the restoration of walking, such as brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices, have been sought. This study reports on the first electroencephalogram (EEG) based BCI-FES system for overground walking, and its performance assessment in an individual with paraplegia due to SCI. The results revealed that the participant was able to purposefully operate the syste

Comparison of tactile, auditory, and visual modality for brain-computer interface use: a case study with a patient in the locked-in state.

This paper describes a case study with a patient in the classic locked-in state, who currently has no means of independent communication. Following a user-centered approach, we investigated event-related potentials (ERP) elicited in different modalities for use in brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Such systems could provide her with an alternative communication channel. To investigate the most viable modality for achieving BCI based communication, classic oddball paradigms (1 rare and 1 frequent stimulus, ratio 1:5) in the visual, auditory and tactile modality were conducted (2 runs per

Motor imagery brain-computer interface rehabilitation system enhances upper limb performance and improves brain activity in stroke patients: A clinical study.

This study compared the efficacy of Motor Imagery brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) combined with physiotherapy and physiotherapy alone in ischemic stroke before and after rehabilitation training. We wanted to explore whether the rehabilitation effect of MI-BCI is affected by the severity of the patient's condition and whether MI-BCI was effective for all patients. Forty hospitalized patients with ischemic stroke with motor deficits participated in this study. The patients were divided into MI and control groups. Functional assessments were performed before and after rehabilitation training. T

Bridging innovation and adoption: a mixed-methods investigation into stroke survivors' acceptability of brain-computer interface-based rehabilitation interventions.

Objective. Brain-computer interface (BCI)-based interventions show growing evidence of efficacy for post-stroke upper-limb rehabilitation by closing the sensorimotor loop and promoting neuroplasticity. Despite this promise, their clinical uptake remains limited. This study aimed to identify the determinants of BCI acceptability among stroke survivors in order to inform user-centred neurotechnology design and facilitate clinical adoption.Approach. We conducted a mixed-methods study combining a large-scale questionnaire (N= 140) and semi-structured interviews (N= 12) with stroke survivors. The q

A Novel Brain-Computer Interface Application: Precise Decoding of Urination and Defecation Motor Attempts in Spinal Cord Injury Patients.

Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) often face urinary and defecation dysfunction, and existing treatments have limited effectiveness. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has been shown to have positive effects on the rehabilitation of SCI patients, but its application in promoting the recovery of urinary and defecation functions has not been explored. This study proposes a new BCI application approach and develops an accurate decoding model targeted at urination and defecation motor attempt tasks. Specifically, we designed a Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional Network (UDCNN-BiTCN)

An Immersive P300 Brain-Computer Interface Based on 3D Morphological Stimuli and Self-Adaptive Bayesian Linear Discriminant Analysis.

Conventional P300-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) commonly rely on two-dimensional (2D) visual flashing, which may induce visual fatigue and limit immersion, thereby restricting long-term usability and system performance. To address these limitations, this study proposes an immersive P300-BCI framework integrating a three-dimensional morphological stimulation paradigm, termed 3D-Morph, with self-adaptive Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (SA-BLDA). Instead of using color or luminance flickering, the proposed paradigm employs dynamic 2D-to-3D morphological transformations of virtual

Predicting rehabilitation outcomes of unilateral stroke after brain-computer interface training based on magnetic resonance imaging data.

Stroke remains a significant cause of disability globally, with a noticeable prevalence in China. Post-stroke rehabilitation, particularly through brain-computer interface (BCI) methods, plays a vital role in enhancing motor function recovery. However, the efficacy of BCI rehabilitation might be hindered by challenges in individualized program of prognosis prediction. This study aimed to develop prognostic prediction models for unilateral hemiplegia after BCI rehabilitation, utilizing both clinical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, in order to enhance treatment efficiency

Multimodal brain-computer interface for robotic control: integration of real-time gaze tracking and EEG-based motor imagery.

Individuals with upper limb dysfunction face significant challenges in performing everyday tasks, often depending on healthcare professionals, caregivers, or family members. Such reliance places a continuous burden on helpers who must remain available for assistance. To address these challenges, this study investigated a virtual hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) system that integrates gaze tracking with motor imagery (MI) to control a robotic arm, potentially reducing the dependency on human support. Twenty healthy, right-handed participants took part in a virtual game environment where th

A role for preparatory midfrontal theta in autism as revealed by a high executive load brain-computer interface reverse spelling task.

Midfrontal theta oscillations have been linked to executive function, yet their role in autism-where this function is often compromised-remains unclear. We hypothesized that preparatory increases in theta power may help normalize performance in autism. To test this, we used a challenging interactive executive function task designed to impose a high working memory load and require constant error monitoring. An electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) was used to maximize cognitive load and engagement. Neural activity from autistic and non-autistic adults was compared whil

Effect of Brain Computer Interface Training on Frontoparietal Network Function for Young People: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

AIMS: Inattention in young people is one of the main reasons for their declining learning ability. Frontoparietal networks (FPNs) are associated with attention and executive function. Brain computer interface (BCI) training has been applied in neurorehabilitation, but there is a lack of research on its application to cognition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of BCI on the attention network in healthy young adults. METHODS: Twenty-seven healthy people performed BCI training for 5 consecutive days. An attention network test (ANT) was performed at baseline and immediately after the f

Transcranial focused ultrasound to V5 enhances human visual motion brain-computer interface by modulating feature-based attention.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables users to control devices with their minds. Despite advancements, non-invasive BCIs still exhibit high error rates, prompting investigation into the potential reduction through concurrent targeted neuromodulation. Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation technology with high spatiotemporal precision. This study examines whether tFUS neuromodulation can improve BCI outcomes, and explores the underlying mechanism of action using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) source imaging (ESI). As a result, V5-targete
