Effect of bromocriptine treatment on the aldosterone response to angiotensin II and adrenocorticotropin in idiopathic hyperaldosteronism.

Bromocriptine can prevent an increase in plasma aldosterone during the infusion of angiotensin II in normal subjects and during upright posture in some patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism. To determine if bromocriptine prevents the increase in plasma aldosterone concentration during angiotensin II infusion in idiopathic hyperaldosteronism, we infused angiotensin II in five patients with idiopathic hyperaldosteronism, before and after treatment with bromocriptine (2.5 mg, three times daily for 5 days), and measured the resulting plasma aldosterone and angiotensin II concentrations. We a

Cushing's disease and marked hyperprolactinemia in a patient with a pituitary macroadenoma: effectiveness of bromocriptine treatment.

The case of a young boy bearing a pituitary PRL secreting adenoma (20-30,000 ng/ml) with the unusual association of clinical and endocrinological features of Cushing's disease successfully treated with bromocriptine is described. Brain computed tomography evidenced a huge pituitary adenoma leading to visual field defects and raised intracranial pressure. Due to the very large size of the tumor, which rendered the complete neurosurgical removal unlikely, medical treatment with bromocriptine (10 mg/day) was started. Follow-up for more than six months demonstrated an impressive reduction of tumor

Follow-up of patients with prolactinomas after discontinuation of long-term therapy with bromocriptine.

The effects of bromocriptine discontinuation after a 2 year course of therapy on prolactin (Prl) serum levels and the radiological size of the sella turcica were investigated in 16 women with amenorrhoea-galactorrhoea due to prolactinoma. During therapy, all but 2 patients had normalized serum Prl levels, and 4 women with macroprolactinomas exhibited a reduction in the size of the tumour as documented by CT-scanning and tomography of the sellae. After bromocriptine withdrawal and follow-up during 2 additional years, Prl levels remained normal in 6 patients, 2 of them with microprolactinomas an

Partial hypopituitarism and hyperprolactinemia: successful induction of ovulation with bromocriptine and human menopausal gonadotropins.

The case of a patient who developed partial hypopituitarism (hypogonadotropism and growth hormone deficiency) following transphenoidal removal of a prolactinoma is described. Hypogonadotropism persisted despite restoration of normoprolactinemia with bromocriptine therapy. Successful induction of ovulation with human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) and bromocriptine suppression of the hyperprolactinemia was carried out, resulting in a pregnancy. The pros and cons of operative and nonoperative management of hyperprolactinemia are discussed.

Effects of bromocriptine mesylate on the composition of the mammary secretion in non-breast-feeding women.

A double-blind trial was performed on 26 women, who had elected not to breast-feed their infants, to determine the effect of bromocriptine mesylate (2.5 mg twice daily for 14 days postpartum) on the composition of the mammary secretion during lactogenesis. Mammary secretion (less than 5.0 ml) was collected from each breast of each woman at daily intervals during the 14-day treatment period and the progressive changes in the concentration of the milk constituents, lactose, alpha-lactalbumin, serum albumin, total protein, lactoferin, IgA, IgG, sodium and potassium were determined. Bromocriptine in the treatment of secondary amenorrhoea and ovarian dysfunction in hyper- and normo-prolactinaemic patients.

The clinical use of bromocriptine (2.5 mg twice daily) was investigated in 40 women attending an infertility clinic and presenting with secondary amenorrhoea (18) or with ovarian dysfunction (22) which had failed to respond to anti-oestrogen therapy. Patients in each group were sub-divided into those with raised and those with normal prolactin levels, and re-examined at 3 and 12 months after the start of treatment. The results confirmed that bromocriptine is effective in the treatment of hyperprolactinaemic states whether there is amenorrhoea or not. Moreover, in cases of ovarian dysfunction a

Bromocriptine in type 2 diabetes: a promising alternative, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition driven by insulin resistance and impaired beta-cell function. As beta cells gradually lose function, blood glucose levels rise, leading to clinical diabetes. This condition also elevates the risk of cardiovascular complications. Treatment typically requires multiple medications with different mechanisms of action. Recent developments include bromocriptine, a dopamine agonist approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for type 2 diabetes, which has been shown to reduce plasma glucose, triglycerides, and free fatty acid levels.

Bromocriptine: does this drug of Parkinson's disease have a role in managing cardiovascular diseases?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Bromocriptine is a partial antagonist for D1 dopamine receptors while also serving as a selective agonist on D2 dopamine receptors as a dopamine receptor agonist. Apart from prolactin inhibiting action, bromocriptine has some beneficial effects on the blood pressure, plasma norepinephrine levels and vascular resistance. Dopamine D2 receptor activation of bromocriptine is associated with the antihypertensive effect, which lowers blood pressure via inhibiting sympathetic nerve activity and Na/K ATPase act

Bromocriptine as a Potential Glucose-lowering Agent for the Treatment of Prolactinoma with Type 2 Diabetes.

A 22-year-old Japanese woman consulted an endocrinologist due to persistent galactorrhea for the past 10 months. She had hyperprolacinemia and had previously been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus based on her glycohemoglobin level of 11.6%. After two months, she was admitted to our hospital and finally diagnosed with prolactinoma. For the treatment of prolactinoma, bromocriptine 2.5 mg/day was started. After seven days, her post-prandial blood glucose levels, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance and plasma C-peptide levels were significantly improved. These results indicat
