OBJECTIVES: Understanding human phenotypic plasticity in response to social, ecosystem, and climate interactions can be an important tool for designing social and public health strategies that increase climate change resilience. Sensitivity of the tibia to environmental perturbations is well established; moreover, Allen's rule predicts relatively longer tibial length in hotter climates. In this study, we hypothesized DNA methylation (DNAm) changes as potential mechanisms for impacts of environmental heat exposure in utero persisting in childhood tibial growth in Kenyan Samburu pastoralist chil

Respiratory diseases are increasingly influenced by meteorological variability, yet few studies have applied high-resolution environmental data and advanced forecasting models to quantify this relationship in climate-sensitive regions such as southern China. This study aims to characterize how climate variability drives respiratory disease dynamics by quantifying the influence of meteorological factors and constructing predictive models for early intervention. It further seeks to advance climate-resilient health surveillance through the application of machine learning and time-series forecasti

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a primary source of acute lower respiratory tract infection, the leading cause of death in children under 5. Over 99% of RSV-attributed deaths occur in low-income countries, including Madagascar. RSV transmission is linked to climate, driving highly seasonal dynamics.
METHODS: We used generalised additive models (GAMs) to identify correlates of reported RSV infections in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from January 2011 to December 2021, then fit catalytic models to cumulative age-structured incidence to estimate age-specific force of infection (FO

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a major global health concern, with Brazil experiencing recurrent and severe outbreaks due to its favorable climate factors, socio-environmental conditions, and increasing human mobility. Accurate forecasting of dengue cases and outbreak risk is essential for early warning systems and effective public health interventions. Traditional forecasting models primarily rely on historical case data and climate variables, often neglecting the role of human movement in virus transmission. This study addresses this gap by incorporating human mobility data into a deep learning

Montane cloud forests are areas of high endemism, and are one of the more vulnerable terrestrial ecosystems to climate change. Thus, understanding how they both contribute to the generation of biodiversity, and will respond to ongoing climate change, are important and related challenges. The widely accepted model for montane cloud forest dynamics involves upslope forcing of their range limits with global climate warming. However, limited climate data provides some support for an alternative model, where range limits are forced downslope with climate warming. Testing between these two models is

Managing pathogen outbreaks remains a significant challenge. This study aimed to assess the ecological thresholds of West Nile virus (WNV) circulation by integrating long-term viral data with climate information. We analyzed WNV sequences retrieved from NCBI Virus and associated climatic variables, focusing on samples linked to mosquito vectors and avian hosts. Using Random Forest–based species-specific ecological niche models, we identified eight vector and bird species with high predictive performance (AUC > 0.7). These models were integrated into a spatial risk framework to highlight condit

Under climate change, the reduction of frost risk, onset of warm temperatures and depletion of soil moisture are all likely to occur earlier in the year in many temperate regions. The resilience of tree species will depend on their ability to track these changes in climate with shifts in phenology that lead to earlier growth initiation in the spring. Exposure to warm temperatures ('forcing') typically triggers growth initiation, but many trees also require exposure to cool temperatures ('chilling') while dormant to readily initiate growth in the spring. If warming increases forcing and decreas

BACKGROUND: In the past few decades, several researchers have proposed highly accurate prediction models that have typically relied on climate parameters. However, climate factors can be unreliable and can lower the effectiveness of prediction when they are applied in locations where climate factors do not differ significantly. The purpose of this study was to improve a dengue surveillance system in areas with similar climate by exploiting the infection rate in the Aedes aegypti mosquito and using the support vector machine (SVM) technique for forecasting the dengue morbidity rate.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has circulated in the United States since 1999. In 2025, Florida was home to 24 million people, with projected increases in population and urbanization in a changing climate. The southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, is found in every county, and is a major vector for WNV. Describing shifting WNV transmission risk is important to inform public health and vector control planning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using published estimates of thermal suitability of WNV transmission by Cx. quinquefasciatus, with climate models and p

Climate conditions can significantly affect plant dormancy and growing season, impacting crop development and its productivity. Temperature is considered the primary driver of grapevine phenology, with endodormancy and ecodormancy largely regulated by chilling and forcing accumulations, respectively. Nevertheless, additional climatic factors, such as precipitation, radiation and atmospheric circulation patterns, may also contribute and regulate variability of different phenological phases. As hotspot of climate change, Mediterranean regions are witnessing negative compounding effects by enhanc

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease that poses significant health risks and socioeconomic challenges in Brazil, necessitating accurate forecasting across its 27 federal states. With the country's diverse climate and geographical spread, effective dengue prediction requires models that can account for both climate variations and spatial dynamics. This study addresses these needs by using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks enhanced with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) integrating optimal lagged climate variables and spatial influence from neighboring states

BACKGROUND: The climate variables that directly influence vector-borne diseases' ecosystems are mainly temperature and rainfall. This is not only because the vectors bionomics are strongly dependent upon these variables, but also because most of the elements of the systems are impacted, such as the host behavior and development and the pathogen amplification. The impact of the climate changes on the transmission patterns of these diseases is not easily understood, since many confounding factors are acting together. Consequently, knowledge of these impacts is often based on hypothesis derived f

An understanding of the influence of climate change on Ixodes scapularis, the main vector of Lyme disease in North America, is a fundamental component in assessing changes in the spatial distribution of human risk for the disease. We used a climate suitability model of I. scapularis to examine the potential effects of global climate change on future Lyme disease risk in North America. A climate-based logistic model was first used to explain the current distribution of I. scapularis in North America. Climate change scenarios were then applied to extrapolate the model in time and produce forecas

This paper addresses the problem of climate downscaling. Previous research on image super-resolution models has demonstrated the effectiveness of deep learning for downscaling tasks. However, most existing deep learning models for climate downscaling have limited ability to capture the complex details required to generate High-Resolution (HR) image climate data and lack the ability to reassign the importance of different rainfall variables dynamically. To handle these challenges, in this paper, we propose a Climate Downscaling Dual Aggregation Transformer (CDDAT), which can extract rich and hi

Interactions among humans, livestock, and wildlife within disturbed ecosystems, such as those impacted by climate change, can facilitate pathogen spillover transmission and increase disease emergence risks. The study of future climate change impacts on the distribution of free-ranging bats is therefore relevant for forecasting potential disease burden. This study used current and future climate data and historic occurrence locations of the vampire bat species Desmodus rotundus, a reservoir of the rabies virus to assess the potential impacts of climate change on disease reservoir distribution.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading global cause of disability, that disproportionately affects populations in low-resource settings in sub-Saharan Africa, where poverty, limited healthcare, and environmental stressors such as climate variability, poor water and sanitation, and household air pollution compound vulnerability. In Kilifi County, Kenya, recurrent droughts and economic insecurity amplify these challenges, yet the associations between environmental exposures and mental health impacts remain poorly characterized. This study applies machine learning models to examine how climate perce

Research shows that the association between adverse climate conditions and human migration is heterogeneous. One reason for this heterogeneity is the differential vulnerability of populations to climate change. This includes highly vulnerable, "trapped" populations that are too poor to migrate given deep and persistent poverty, the financial costs of migrating, and the erosion of already fragile economic livelihoods under climate change. Another reason for this heterogeneity is the differential vulnerability of places. However, despite the growing list of studies showing that the climate-migra

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are a critical indicator influencing climate change and have significant impacts on the health of riverine ecosystems. The effects of CO2 emissions on streamflow and stream temperature have not been explicitly considered in process-based models, which limits the models' capability to simulate streamflow and stream temperature under varying CO2 concentration scenarios. This study modified an equilibrium temperature model and a CO2 effect model to overcome this limitation, which were subsequently coupled with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The cou

BACKGROUND: Nature contact is often linked to pro-environmental behavior, but the psychological processes connecting these experiences to later behavior remain unclear. This study examined reusing paper and compared two theoretically distinct pathways: a positive-bonding pathway through place attachment and a threat-mobilization pathway through climate anxiety.
METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal study was conducted among 504 Chinese adolescents nested in 15 classrooms. They reported their nature contact during school days, after school, and on weekends, place attachment, climate anxiety, and pa
