System-agnostic prediction of pharmaceutical excipient miscibility via computing-as-a-service and experimental validation.

We applied computing-as-a-service to the unattended system-agnostic miscibility prediction of the pharmaceutical surfactants, Vitamin E TPGS and Tween 80, with Copovidone VA64 polymer at temperature relevant for the pharmaceutical hot melt extrusion process. The computations were performed in lieu of running exhaustive hot melt extrusion experiments to identify surfactant-polymer miscibility limits. The computing scheme involved a massively parallelized architecture for molecular dynamics and free energy perturbation from which binodal, spinodal, and mechanical mixture critical points were det

Post-mortem changes of the vascular system-a thanatological study using multidetector computed tomography.

Forensic pathologists have to deal with post-mortem changes of the human body. Those post-mortem phenomena are familiar and largely described in thanatology. However, knowledge about the influence of post-mortem phenomena on the vascular system is more limited, except for the apparition and development of cadaveric lividity. The introduction of multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the forensic field and the expansion of their usage in medico-legal routine, allow for exploring the inside of corpses differently and may play a part in the understanding

Short report: surgery for implantable brain-computer interface assisted by robotic navigation system.

We present an implantable brain-computer interface surgical case assisted by robotic navigation system in an elderly patient with tetraplegia caused by cervical spinal cord injury. Left primary motor cortex was selected for implantation of microelectrode arrays based on fMRI location of motor imagery. Robotic navigation system was used during this procedure for precise and stable manipulation. A design of bipartite incision was made to reduce the risk of surgery-related infection and facilitate BCI training. At 1-year follow-up, the neural signals were robust, and this patient was able to cont

Conformity assessment of a computer vision-based posture analysis system for the screening of postural deformation.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the conformity of using a computer vision-based posture analysis system as a screening assessment for postural deformity detection in the spine that is easily applicable to clinical practice. METHODS: One hundred forty participants were enrolled for screening of the postural deformation. Factors that determine the presence or absence of spinal deformation, such as shoulder height difference (SHD), pelvic height difference (PHD), and leg length mismatch (LLD), were used as parameters for the clinical decision support system (CDSS) using a commercial computer vi

Breast density in dedicated breast computed tomography: Proposal of a classification system and interreader reliability.

The aim of this study was to develop a new breast density classification system for dedicated breast computed tomography (BCT) based on lesion detectability analogous to the ACR BI-RADS breast density scale for mammography, and to evaluate its interrater reliability. In this retrospective study, 1454 BCT examinations without contrast media were screened for suitability. Excluding datasets without additional ultrasound and exams without any detected lesions resulted in 114 BCT examinations. Based on lesion detectability, an atlas-based BCT density (BCTD) classification system of breast parenchym

Computed tomography imaging features for amyloid dacryolith in the nasolacrimal excretory system: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction leading to epiphora is a common ophthalmologic complaint, and it may derive from amyloidosis in rare cases. There are a few reports about localized amyloidosis, and amyloidosis with involvement and obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct is exceedingly rare. CASE SUMMARY: A 54-year-old male presented with a 2-year history of a lump overlying the left lacrimal sac that had grown rapidly for nearly half a year. Physical examination touched a firm lump in the left lacrimal sac. Nasal endoscopy discovered lesions in appearance of sediments with easy bleeding

A Track Geometry Measuring System Based on Multibody Kinematics, Inertial Sensors and Computer Vision.

This paper describes the kinematics used for the calculation of track geometric irregularities of a new Track Geometry Measuring System (TGMS) to be installed in railway vehicles. The TGMS includes a computer for data acquisition and process, a set of sensors including an inertial measuring unit (IMU, 3D gyroscope and 3D accelerometer), two video cameras and an encoder. The kinematic description, that is borrowed from the multibody dynamics analysis of railway vehicles used in computer simulation codes, is used to calculate the relative motion between the vehicle and the track, and also for th

Deep learning for abdominal ultrasound: A computer-aided diagnostic system for the severity of fatty liver.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is increasing over time worldwide, with similar trends to those of diabetes and obesity. A liver biopsy, the gold standard of diagnosis, is not favored due to its invasiveness. Meanwhile, noninvasive evaluation methods of fatty liver are still either very expensive or demonstrate poor diagnostic performances, thus, limiting their applications. We developed neural network-based models to assess fatty liver and classify the severity using B-mode ultrasound (US) images. METHODS: We followed standards for reporting of diagnostic accur

Extraglottic Airway Device Misplacement: A Novel Classification System and Findings in Postmortem Computed Tomography.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Extraglottic airway devices are frequently used during cardiac arrest resuscitations and for failed intubation attempts. Recent literature suggests that many extraglottic airway devices are misplaced. The aim of this study is to create a classification system for extraglottic airway device misplacement and describe its frequency in a cohort of decedents who died with an extraglottic airway device in situ. METHODS: We assembled a cohort of all decedents who died with an extraglottic airway device in situ and underwent postmortem computed tomographic (CT) imaging at the state m

Insights into the design of spray systems for cell therapies for retinal disease using computational modelling.

Chronic eye diseases are the main cause of vision loss among adults. Among these, retinal degenerative diseases affect millions of people globally, causing permanent loss of cells and organ dysfunction. Despite recent progress in developing stem cell therapies for retinal diseases, methods for delivery remain an area of intense research. Aerosol technology is a promising technique with the potential to spray cells evenly and directly across the retinal surface, promoting cell attachment and survival. Here we implement mathematical modelling of the spraying process to develop organ-specific spr

Prevalence of Sacroiliitis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Using a Standardized Computed Tomography Scoring System.

OBJECTIVE: There is an increasing emphasis on the early identification and treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) of which the hallmark is sacroiliitis. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of AS and often receive computed tomography (CT) scans of their abdomen, affording clinicians the opportunity to determine the presence of sacroiliitis. Previous studies using CT have relied only on the radiologist's gestalt or a nonvalidated adaptation of the modified New York criteria. Our aim is to assess the prevalence of sacroiliitis in IBD using a validated screening

A computer-aided diagnosis system for breast ultrasound based on weighted BI-RADS classes.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Conventional computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for breast ultrasound (BUS) are trained to classify pathological classes, that is, benign and malignant. However, from a clinical perspective, this kind of classification does not agree totally with radiologists' diagnoses. Usually, the tumors are assessed by using a BI-RADS (Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System) category and, accordingly, a recommendation is emitted: annual study for category 2 (benign), six-month follow-up study for category 3 (probably benign), and biopsy for categories 4 and 5 (suspicious of

Systemic air embolism as a complication of percutaneous computed tomography guided transthoracic lung biopsy.

A 57-year-old man underwent prone position computed tomography (CT) guided percutaneous transthoracic lung biopsy. After removal of the 18-gauge biopsy needle, the patient lost consciousness and developed shock. CT showed signs of air embolism in descending aorta and left atrium. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was unsuccessful. A postmortem CT scan confirmed a massive air embolism in the descending aorta, left ventricle and brain. Systemic air embolism occurs in around 0.001-0.003% of lung biopsy procedures. Recommendations to reduce the risk include requesting the patient to stop breathing dur

Lund-Mackay System for Computed Tomography Evaluation of Paranasal Sinuses in Patients with Granulomatosis and Polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), a disease capable of affecting any organ, most often acts upon the upper respiratory tract. Diagnostic imaging is primarily represented by computed tomography (CT) of paranasal sinuses. The aim of this study was to define the characteristic changes in paranasal CT in patients with GPA and to evaluate diagnostic usefulness of the Lund-Mackey scoring system (L-M System). The study encompassed 43 patients with GPA of the mean age of 47.7 ± 12.8 years who were treated topically with mupirocin. We found that inflammation occurred mainly in the maxillary sinus

Autonomic nervous system regulation of the sinoatrial cell depolarization rate: Unifying computational models.

In the last years different computational models have been proposed to simulate the sinoatrial node cell (SANC) action potential. Also, there has been a great effort to model the heart regulation mechanism by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) through the sympathetic and parasympathetic pathways. Both computational models have tried to fit the rabbit and/or the guinea-pig experimental heart rate data with an increasing success. Thus, the aim of this work was to unify the available models that have been reported to study the heart rate behavior when the SANC is stimulated by using different fre
