Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus: a four-year experience in a spinal cord injury unit in Spain.

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection poses a problem for both acute and long-term-care facilities, Spinal Cord Injury units included. This paper describes the 4-year evolution of MRSA outbreaks in a SCI unit in a university hospital where control measures were implemented from the first case detected. The protocol procedure was as follows: contact isolation, washing with antiseptic soap both those infected and those sharing the same room, contacts study and monitoring of MRSA patients up to the time when three consecutive negative cultures (sampled at time lapses of ove

[Practice and development of schistosomiasis control culture in China: A case of Jiangxi Province].

Schistosomiasis control is not only a disease control programme, but also a great social practice activity in China. During the evolution of national schistosomiasis control programmes, the special schistosomiasis control culture has been cultivated and developed, which contains the spiritual connotation of government-led, people-oriented, respect for science and integration of all efforts. The publication of Chairman Mao Zedong's two poems entitled "Farewell to the God of Plague" and the post-script in 1958 was a sign for the formation and development of Chinese schistosomiasis control cultur

[Ecological Quality Assessment of Chengdu's Main Urban Area Based on Remote Sensing Ecological Index and Its Response Analysis to Functional Zoning].

This study investigated the spatiotemporal evolution of ecological quality and its response mechanism to urban functional zoning in Chengdu's main urban area, aiming to provide a scientific basis for ecological space optimization. Based on Landsat remote sensing images from 1992 to 2023, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was constructed. Spatial autocorrelation analysis and Moran's I index were employed to reveal the spatial differentiation characteristics of ecological quality. Urban functional zones were identified using POI data and the TF-IDF method. Pearson correlation and standa

Cytogenetic findings in a new case of adenoid cystic carcinoma arising in sphenoidal sinus.

We studied a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma. Cytogenetic analysis was performed on short-term culture, and the karyotype revealed only an abnormal cell line with the following changes: partial trisomy 5q, 6q deletion, monosomy of chromosome 9,der(10)t(10;15), a possible ring chromosome 22, and loss of the Y chromosome. The implication of chromosomes 6 and 9 is considered in relation to the karyotypic evolution of this type of tumor.

Four-Dimensional Electrochemiluminescence Microscopy Enables Depth-Resolved Imaging of Single, Living Spheroids.

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems called spheroids have emerged as a valuable alternative to traditional two-dimensional cell cultures due to their ability to closely mimic the complexity of in vivo environments. In this study we propose a hybrid "confocal" electrochemiluminescence (ECL) approach that harnesses the optical sectioning ability of confocal microscopy and the high spatial resolution of ECL, overcoming the surface-confinement barrier of conventional ECL and enabling depth-resolved mapping of living spheroids up to 150 µm from the electrode while resolving the temporal evo

Cultural change that sticks.

When a major change initiative runs aground, leaders often blame their company's culture for pushing it off course. They try to forge ahead by overhauling the culture--a tactic that tends to fizzle, fail, or backfire. Most cultures are too well entrenched to be jettisoned. The secret is to stop fighting your culture--and to work with and within it, until it evolves in the right direction. Today's best-performing companies, such as Southwest Airlines, Apple, and the Four Seasons, understand this, say the authors, three consultants from Booz & Company. These organizations follow five principles

[Microbial contamination of the bile and its effects on the course of the surgical wound after cholecystectomy].

From a series of 58 cholecystectomies for chronic cholecystitis or for asymptomatic cholelithiasis, the authors have retrieved: 1) gall microbial contamination in 15,5% of the samples under study; 2) a complicated evolution--according to criteria defined for this research--of the operative wounds in 37,5% of the cases with positive gall cultures, and in 11% when the gall was sterile. It is the authors' opinion that cholecystectomy shows an actual septic risk, even in a non-acute clinical stage.

Distribution of amoebal endosymbiotic environmental chlamydia Neochlamydia S13 via amoebal cytokinesis.

We previously isolated a symbiotic environmental amoeba, harboring an environmental chlamydia, Neochlamydia S13. Interestingly, this bacterium failed to survive outside of host cells and was immediately digested inside other amoebae, indicating bacterial distribution via cytokinesis. This may provide a model for understanding organelle development and chlamydial pathogenesis and evolution; therefore, we assessed our hypothesis of Neochlamydia S13 distribution via cytokinesis by comparative analysis with other environmental Chlamydiae (Protochlamydia R18 and Parachlamydia Bn9 ). Dual staining w

In vivo evolution of an emerging zoonotic bacterial pathogen in an immunocompromised human host.

Zoonotic transfer of animal pathogens to human hosts can generate novel agents, but the genetic events following such host jumps are not well studied. Here we characterize the mechanisms driving adaptive evolution of the emerging zoonotic pathogen Bordetella hinzii in a patient with interleukin-12 receptor β1 deficiency. Genomic sequencing of 24 B. hinzii isolates cultured from blood and stool over 45 months revealed a clonal lineage that had undergone extensive within-host genetic and phenotypic diversification. Twenty of 24 isolates shared an E9G substitution in the DNA polymerase III ε-subu

The stratigraphy and formation of Middle Stone Age deposits in Cave 1B, Klasies River Main site, South Africa, with implications for the context, age, and cultural association of the KRM 41815/SAM-AP 6222 human mandible.

Cave 1B, in the Klasies River Main site complex (KRM), is best known for the recovery of the KRM 41815/SAM-AP 6222 human mandible. After initial skepticism over the modernity of this specimen, it is accepted that the mix of archaic and modern traits it displays is characteristic of early Homo sapiens individuals. Different authors have associated this specimen with the Middle Stone Age (MSA) I and II/Mossel Bay cultural phases, but the published data do not allow an unambiguous attribution. KRM 41815's frequent use in studies of the evolution of the human mandible, and its well-developed chin,

Enterococcus faecalis OG1RF Evolution at Low pH Selects Fusidate-Sensitive Mutants in Elongation Factor G and at High pH Selects Defects in Phosphate Transport.

Enterococcus bacteria inhabit human and soil environments that show a wide range of pH values. Strains include commensals as well as antibiotic-resistant pathogens. We investigated the adaptation to pH stress in E. faecalis OG1RF by conducting experimental evolution under acidic (pH 4.8), neutral pH (pH 7.0), and basic (pH 9.0) conditions. A serial planktonic culture was performed for 500 generations and in a high-pH biofilm culture for 4 serial bead transfers. Nearly all of the mutations led to nonsynonomous codons, indicating adaptive selection. All of the acid-adapted clones from the plankt

Establishment and optimization of a new model organism to study early land plant evolution: Germination, cultivation and oospore variation of Chara braunii Gmelin, 1826.

For studying land plant evolution, the establishment and optimization of model organisms representing streptophytic algae, sister to land plants, is essential. Long-term cultivation experiments with Chara braunii S276 were performed over 8 years, since 4 years (Nov. 2018) under constant conditions. Additionally, short-term experiments for optimization of culture conditions were performed with three strains of C. braunii (S276, NIES-1604 and Lausiger Teiche, LaT-2708). Germination success after application of sterilization agents, addition of gibberellic acid and under different incubation cond

Use of organoids to study regenerative responses to intestinal damage.

Intestinal organoid cultures provide an in vitro model system for studying pathways and mechanisms involved in epithelial damage and repair. Derived from either embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells or adult intestinal stem cells or tissues, these self-organizing, multicellular structures contain polarized mature cells that recapitulate both the physiology and heterogeneity of the intestinal epithelium. These cultures provide a cutting-edge technology for defining regenerative pathways that are induced following radiation or chemical damage, which directly target the cycling intestinal s

[Bilateral bronchopneumonia due to Rothia mucilaginosa].

Rothia mucilaginosa (R. mucilaginosa), formerly named Stomatococcus mucilaginosus, is a facultatively anaerobic, encapsulated gram-positive coccus, which forms part of the normal oropharyngeal and is rarely considered to be a pathogen in immunocompetent patients, although it can produce, on rare occasions, serious infections like bacteremia, endocarditis and respiratory infections; such as pneumonia, pleural empyema or superinfection of bronchiectasis. We present the case of a 74-year-old male diagnosed with right basal pneumonia of torpid evolution with a poor initial response to different an

The Contents and Function of Humor Among Hunter-Gatherers.

Across cultures, people find many of the same things funny. Competing theories of humor have been forwarded to account for this. Adopting a view of humor as an evolved response to benign violations, I argue that four comic themes characterize most humor across cultures: pain and misfortune, sex and obscenity, the foreign, and the sacred. I propose that each of these themes are ultimately grounded in our evolved psychology as universal pressure points that humor can tap into. I review 745 descriptions of humor in the ethnographic record of the ten hunter-gatherer societies in the Probability Sa

Understanding persistent bacterial lung infections: clinical implications informed by the biology of the microbiota and biofilms.

The infections found in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, and bronchiectasis share a number of clinical similarities, the most striking of which is bacterial persistence despite the use of antibiotics. These infections have been clinically described using culture-based methods usually performed on sputum samples, and treatment has been directed towards the bacteria found in this manner. Unfortunately the clinical response to antibiotics is frequently not predictable based on these cultures, and the role of these cultured organisms in disease progression has been debated.

[Late neonatal sepsis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes].

Currently, the group A Streptococcus is a unusual cause of infection in the neonatal period. The description of cases of severe infection in the newborn is sporadic. We present a 12-days-old newborn attended at the emergency room for fever without focus, which developed neurological and systemic involvement during admission. Clinical presentation, evolution and treatment are described. Blood culture isolation of group A Streptococcus confirmed late sepsis by this bacteria, probably with associated meningitis.
