Increased Screen Use on Days With Increased Perceived COVID-19-Related Confinements-A Day Level Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

Introduction: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) quickly evolved into a global pandemic in early 2020, and most countries enforced social confinements to reduce transmission. This seems to dovetail with increasing, potentially problematic, screen use habits, such as gaming and "binge-watching." Yet, the subjective experience of the common confinements may vary not only between individuals depending on age, sex, and living conditions (i.e., living alone) but also within individuals from day to day: confinements might interfere with habitual activity schedules more strongly on some days than on others.

Patterns of Missing Data With Ecological Momentary Assessment Among People Who Use Drugs: Feasibility Study Using Pilot Study Data.

BACKGROUND: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a set of research methods that capture events, feelings, and behaviors as they unfold in their real-world setting. Capturing data in the moment reduces important sources of measurement error but also generates challenges for noncompliance (ie, missing data). To date, EMA research has only examined the overall rates of noncompliance. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we identify four types of noncompliance among people who use drugs and aim to examine the factors associated with the most common types. METHODS: Data were obtained from a recent pilot

Psychotic experiences in daily-life in adolescents and young adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: An Ecological Momentary Assessment study.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a genetic condition associated with a markedly increased risk for psychosis. Psychotic experiences are classically evaluated by clinical interviews that give little information about these symptoms' fluctuation in daily-life. The current study aims to investigate these phenomena using the Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA), a structured diary technique that collects real-life measures in the everyday-life context, and to examine how these manifestations relate to a gold standard semi-structured assessment of psychotic experiences. Eighty-six individual

Ecological momentary assessment of mood and movement with bipolar disorder over time: Participant recruitment and efficacy of study methods.

OBJECTIVES: Mobile technology and ambulatory research tools enable the study of human experience in vivo, when and where it occurs. This includes cognitive processes that cannot be directly measured or observed (e.g., emotion) but can be reported in the moment when prompted. METHODS: For the Bipolar Affective Disorder and older Adults (BADAS) Study, 50 participants were randomly prompted twice daily to complete brief smartphone questionnaires. This included the Bipolar Disorder Symptom Scale which was developed to briefly measure symptoms of both depression (cognitive and somatic) and hypo/ma

Geographic Ecological Momentary Assessment (GEMA) of environmental noise annoyance: the influence of activity context and the daily acoustic environment.

BACKGROUND: Noise annoyance is considered to be the most widespread and recognized health effect of environmental noise. Previous research is mostly based on the static study of residential environmental noise, but few studies have focused on the effects of noise exposure in different activity contexts on real-time annoyance. The two deficiency are that they neglect the influence of activity context besides residence and fail to reflect the difference of time-scale effect of noise influence. METHODS: Using portable noise and air sensors, GPS-equipped mobile phones, questionnaire survey, and g

Acceptability of smartphone applications for global positioning system (GPS) and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) research among sexual minority men.

BACKGROUND: Emerging research is using global positioning system (GPS) and ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods among sexual minority men (SMM), a population that experiences multiple health disparities. However, we are not aware of any research that has combined these approaches among SMM, highlighting the need for acceptability and feasibility research. The purpose of this study was to examine the acceptability of implementing GPS and EMA research protocols using smartphone applications among SMM as well as related socio-demographic correlates. METHODS: Data come from a sample of S

Assessment of Stress and Well-Being of Japanese Employees Using Wearable Devices for Sleep Monitoring Combined With Ecological Momentary Assessment: Pilot Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality can elevate stress levels and diminish overall well-being. Japanese individuals often experience sleep deprivation, and workers have high levels of stress. Nevertheless, research examining the connection between objective sleep assessments and stress levels, as well as overall well-being, among Japanese workers is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the correlation between physiological data, including sleep duration and heart rate variability (HRV), objectively measured through wearable devices, and 3 states (sleepiness, mood, and energy) assesse

Positive and negative affect in the daily life of world trade center responders with PTSD: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: The ability to experience positive affect (PA) has clinical and quality of life implications, particularly in vulnerable populations such as trauma-exposed disaster responders. Low PA is included in the diagnostic criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), however evidence for PA reduction in PTSD has been mixed. In contrast, negative affect (NA) has consistently been found to be elevated among individuals with PTSD. Multiday, ecological momentary assessment (EMA) can provide more ecologically valid evidence about experiences of affect; however, no such studies have been con

An in vivo study of the relationship between craving and reaction time during alcohol detoxification using the ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUND: To study cognitive interference associated with craving for alcohol, the Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) method was used to measure the relationship between craving and reaction time. A secondary aim was the study of the predictive factors for craving during alcohol detoxification. The EMA enables both repeated measures of craving in a natural setting and the recording of reaction time without the patient being aware of this. METHODS: Craving for alcohol, reaction time, sadness and anxiety were recorded 8 to 12 times a day, over three weeks of detoxification in 14 alcoholics

A novel ecological momentary assessment app for the investigation of daily cognitive functioning in breast cancer survivors: a feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer survivors often experience cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI), such as problems with memory and attention. However, typical neuropsychological test batteries are unable to capture the day-to-day variability of cognition and may be underestimating CRCI. The present study aims to assess the feasibility, usability, and validity of a novel ecological momentary assessment (EMA) app of cognition. METHODS: Nineteen breast cancer survivors 6-36-month post-chemotherapy and 28 healthy controls completed the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery. Subsequently, participants complet

The Effects of Immediate vs Gradual Reduction in Nicotine Content of Cigarettes on Smoking Behavior: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, much research has examined the effects of various interventions and treatments for smoking cessation. The results suggest that interventions targeting changes of nicotine content can help smokers reduce tobacco use or quit smoking. A number of clinical studies show that smokers who received an immediate reduction in nicotine content to very low levels have significantly greater reductions in the number of cigarettes smoked and toxic substance exposure compared to those with gradual reductions. However, from the perspective of smoking craving, whether the immediate

The fragility of perceived social rank following exercise in anorexia nervosa: an ecological momentary assessment study of shame and pride.

PURPOSE: Pride and shame are self-conscious emotions closely associated with perceived social rank. Goss and Gilbert (In: Gilbert and Miles (eds) Body shame: conceptualization, research & treatment. Brunner-Routledge, Hove, 2002) proposed that weight-control behaviours in anorexia nervosa (AN) provide a temporary sense of increased rank that dissipates afterwards, thereby perpetuating further symptoms. This pilot study tested their theory by examining whether shame increases and pride decreases as time passes post-exercise in individuals with AN. Pre-exercise patterns were also explored. METH

Real-Time Symptom Ratings Using Ecological Momentary Assessment Versus Traditional Questionnaires in Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Questionnaires assessing symptoms in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) rely on retrospective reporting, introducing recall bias and missing symptom variability. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) addresses these limitations by capturing real-time symptom data. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare EMA symptom ratings with traditional questionnaires in patients with COPD. METHODS: A subsample from the FAntasTIGUE study rated symptoms using questionnaires (visual analog scale, modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale, Physical Activity Rating Scale-Dy

Does ecological momentary assessment improve prediction of suicide risk among military personnel and veterans, and how frequent should it be?

OBJECTIVES: Suicidal risk fluctuates rapidly, yet suicide monitoring primarily relies on retrospective assessments. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) offers a promising approach for capturing real-time fluctuations in suicidal urges and identifying elevated suicidal risks beyond clinical settings, but poses substantial participant burden. This study aimed to examine the incremental predictive value of EMA and its optimal sampling frequency. METHODS: Military service members and veterans (N = 62) with recent suicidal ideation or attempts received outpatient psychotherapy weekly. Participan
