Orbital abscess caused by Exophiala dermatitidis following posterior subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide: a case report and a review of literature related to Exophiala eye infections.

BACKGROUND: Subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide (STTA) has been widely adopted in the clinical setting of ophthalmology and its infectious complications are rare. However, orbital abscess following STTA has been reported in seven cases. Furthermore, although eye infections due to Exophiala species are uncommon, there have been 19 cases to date. E. jeanselmei, E. phaeomuriformis, E. werneckii, and E. dermatitidis have been reported to cause human eye infections; however, to the best of our knowledge, orbital abscess caused by E. dermatitidis has not yet been reported. We describe the

A New Species of Plasmodium of the Subgenus Novyella Infecting White-Shouldered Fire-Eyes (Pyriglena leucoptera) (Aves: Thamnophilidae) in Brazil.

Bird parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium (Haemosporida: Plasmodiidae) are found worldwide, with over 50 described species categorized into five subgenera. The subgenus Novyella comprises 22 morphologically identified species, of which 59% are genetically associated with at least one haplotype. In the Americas, only three morphospecies have their microscopic characteristics linked to a molecular signature. In this study, we described a new species of Plasmodium (Novyella) infecting a white-shouldered fire-eye (Pyriglena leucoptera) in Brazil. Molecular analysis reveals that the new spec

Sensory-directed isolation and identification of an intense salicin-like bitter compound in infected teas with bird's eye spot disease.

Teas infected with bird's eye spot disease generally exhibited a lingering and long-lasting, salicin-like bitter taste, which was unpalatable to consumers. Sensory-directed isolation processes have been performed in this study to investigate the salicin-like bitter compounds in infected teas. Results showed that infected teas were extracted using a 70% methanol aqueous solution to produce methanol extract, which was then further separated by sequential solvent extraction (SSE) to obtain dichloromethane extract, which contained the salicin-like bitter compounds. The dichloromethane extract was

Therapeutic potential of the MDM2 inhibitor Nutlin-3 in counteracting SARS-CoV-2 infection of the eye through p53 activation.

Starting from the beginning of the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) global pandemic, most of the published data has concentrated on the respiratory signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection, underestimating the presence and importance of ocular manifestations, such as conjunctivitis, usually reported in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. With the present review we intend to resume the ocular involvement in SARS-CoV-2 infection and the recent discoveries about the different cell types and tissues of the eye that can be directly infected by SARS-CoV-2 and propagate the infe

A novel 5-lipoxygenase-activating protein inhibitor, AM679, reduces inflammation in the respiratory syncytial virus-infected mouse eye.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an important cause of viral respiratory disease in children, and RSV bronchiolitis has been associated with the development of asthma in childhood. RSV spreads from the eye and nose to the human respiratory tract. Correlative studies of humans and direct infection studies of BALB/c mice have established the eye as a significant pathway of entry of RSV to the lung. At the same time, RSV infection of the eye produces symptoms resembling allergic conjunctivitis. Cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs) are known promoters of allergy and inflammation, and the first step

Detection of experimental Chlamydia trachomatis eye infection in conjunctival smears and in tissue culture by use of fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibody.

The immunofluorescent staining of conjunctival cytology smears with an antichlamydial monoclonal antibody is a new method for the detection of chlamydial eye infection. Using a monkey model of chlamydial eye infection, we compared the monoclonal antibody staining cytology with the established methods of Giemsa-stained cytology and chlamydial culture with cycloheximide-treated McCoy cells. Compared with either culture or monoclonal antibody-stained cytology, Giemsa cytology had a low sensitivity (30 and 24%, respectively) but was highly specific (100% in each case). Compared with culture, monoc

Effect of Green Light-Mediated Corneal Cross-Linking on the Delivery of Rose Bengal and Vancomycin in Staphylococcus aureus-Infected Eyes.

Rose Bengal (RB)-green light (GL) cross-linking (RGX), a phototherapy used to treat infectious keratitis, activates RB to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), promoting bacterial killing and corneal strengthening through collagen cross-linking. Despite its promise, the way GL exposure alters RB behavior within the infected cornea remains poorly understood. This study investigates RB distribution and fluorescence changes following RGX in methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus-infected bovine corneas with denuded epithelium. Ex vivo RGX treatment resulted in a pronounced, infection-dep

Case Report: Teprotumumab treatment in an HIV-infected patient with refractory thyroid eye disease: clinical and quantitative MRI evidence.

BACKGROUND: People living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may develop Graves' disease as a delayed autoimmune manifestation of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome following antiretroviral therapy. Thyroid eye disease (TED) is uncommon in this setting. Teprotumumab targets the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and inhibits orbital fibroblast activation; however, its use in patients with HIV-associated TED has not previously been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old man with HIV infection developed Graves' hyperthyroidism and active moderate-to-severe TED five

Primary herpes simplex virus type 1 infection of the eye triggers similar immune responses in the cornea and the skin of the eyelids.

Herpetic stromal keratitis (HSK) and blepharoconjunctivitis in humans are thought partly to result from immunopathological responses to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The corneas of NIH mice were inoculated with HSV-1 (strain McKrae) and mice were examined for signs of disease and infection on days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14 and 21. The eyes and eyelids of infected and control mice were processed for immunohistochemistry and double stained for viral antigens and one of the following cell surface markers (Gr-1, F4/80, CD4, CD8, CD45R or MHC class II) or one of the following cytokines (IL-2, IL-4, IL

Comparative clinico-morphological investigations of the CNS of monkeys and of the eye teguments of guinea pigs infected with different measles virus strains.

Measles virus strains Edmonston and L-16 have been studied in 10 intracerebrally (i.c.) infected monkeys and in 155 guinea pigs infected into the anterior eye chamber. The strains appeared to differ in pathogenicity for monkeys and guinea pigs. The more pathogenic Edmonston strain caused encephalitis in monkeys, whereas in guinea pigs it caused iridocyclitis, keratoconjunctivitis and follicular conjunctivitis. Strain L-16 was not neurovirulent for monkeys, while in guinea pigs it caused follicular conjunctivitis. Specific pathohistological changes detected in the CNS of monkeys and in the eye

PHILOPHTHALMUS HECHINGERI N. SP. (DIGENEA: PHILOPHTHALMIDAE), A HUMAN-INFECTING EYE FLUKE FROM THE ASIAN MUD SNAIL, BATILLARIA ATTRAMENTARIA.

Two cases of human philophthalmosis have been reported in Japan. Gravid flukes removed from the eyes of the patients were broken, but their morphological characteristics suggest that an unknown species of the genus Philophthalmus is involved as a pathogen for humans. The mitochondrial DNA barcode of the human eye fluke enabled us to discover its larval stage from the Japanese mud snail, Batillaria attramentaria. The discovered cercaria had previously been temporarily described as "Philophthalmid sp. I." In this study, we examined the infection status of B. attramentaria with Philophthalmid sp.

Viral Loads in Ocular Fluids of Acute Retinal Necrosis Eyes Infected by Varicella-Zoster Virus Treated with Intravenous Acyclovir Treatment.

Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is a rare viral endophthalmitis, and human herpesvirus is the principal pathogen. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical to avoid visual impairment by ARN, and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is required in advanced cases. In this study, we evaluated the transition of viral load in ocular fluids of ARN eyes with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) after intravenous acyclovir treatment. Fourteen eyes of 13 patients were analyzed retrospectively. All patients received intravenous acyclovir treatment, and eventually, all eyes underwent PPV. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

Identification of Major Sequence Types among Multidrug-Resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis Strains Isolated from Infected Eyes and Healthy Conjunctiva.

We examined the presence of virulence and antibiotic resistance genes, SCCmec types and determined the genomic diversity among ocular S. epidermidis isolates (patients-23, healthy controls-29). PCR determined the presence of antibiotic resistance genes, virulence genes and SCCmec types among all isolates. MLST and PFGE determined the genomic relatedness among them. All isolates of S. epidermidis showed resistance to at least one class of antibiotics of which 48 isolates were multidrug resistant and carried ARGs. Thirty-five isolates were methicillin resistant and carried mecA gene. Majority of

A ten year study of prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility pattern, and genotypic characterization of Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus causing ocular infections in a tertiary eye care hospital in South India.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is an important cause of vision threatening ocular infections. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of MRSA and their genotypic characterization in ocular infections. The study period was from January 2007 to December 2017 in Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. Retrospective analysis of clinical records found a total of 1306 Staphylococcus aureus in various ocular infections. Among these, 274 (21%) were found to be MRSA with an increased incidence from 9% in 2007 to 38% in 2017 (P = .007). MRSA was i
