PACAP facilitate the nerve regeneration factors in the facial nerve injury.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) has been reported as a strong neurotrophic factor in the various sites of nervous system. The facial nerve injury is one of the common problems in patients at the Otolaryngology since the nerve damage could occur easily due to the anatomical characteristics. Once it happens, the regeneration is little observed and functional recovery is poor. Thus, we investigated that PACAP might have some influence for regeneration after the facial nerve transaction in the guinea pig. PACAP treatment accelerated time for the appearance of compound mu

[Traumatic facial nerve injury in rabbits: a quantitative pathologic study].

Six kinds of facial nerve injury in 136 facial nerves of 68 rabbits were studied by quantitative pathology. The ratio of intrafascicular axon crossing and the ratio of intrafascicular area can reflect the extent of the lesions for non-cut injury (exposure, compression, stretch and crush) effectively. However, the ratio of mesial to distal intrafascicular area should be combined for the evaluation of cut injury (division and anastomosis). The mean optical density (F1), axon area (F13), and homogeneous degree (F49) can reflect quantitatively the form and extent of the single axon lesion and its

[Chronic facial pain due to nerve injury. Deafferentation pain].

Patients presenting chronic facial pain are very common. After profound examination a significant cause for this pain often cannot be found. Some patients are suffering from this pain due to injury of a sensible nerve and then it is called deafferentation pain. This somatic disorder can give different complaints. Pain can develop as a result of formation of neuromas 'cross-talking' of nerves and alterations in the central nerve system. It seems to be difficult to make clinical features to diagnose deafferentation pain and differentiate it from pain disorders where the psychic suffering seems t

Total facial nerve injury during mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Over the last 10-15 years, usage of internal mandibular distraction systems has increased in the pediatric population, particularly for craniofacial syndromes. Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) has been shown to be effective in avoiding tracheostomy or achieving early decannulation in patients with micro-retrognathic mandibles in hemifacial microsomia or Pierre Robin sequence. As the frequency of the application of MDO has increased, so has the awareness and management of subsequent complications from the procedure. In this study, we discuss a complication involving pares

Traumatic Brain Injury in Trauma Patients With Isolated Facial Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of traumatic brain injury (TBI), and specifically mild TBI (mTBI), is a diagnostic challenge which can delay diagnosis preventing early intervention and follow-up care. Facial fractures represent an objective surrogate marker for potential force transmission to the neural cavity. The authors' objective was to characterize the prevalence of TBI in trauma patients with isolated facial fractures stratified by injury severity. METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective cross-sectional study of the National Trauma Databank (NTDB) from 2007 to 2014 assessing a total of 1,8

Facial emotion recognition in patients with focal and diffuse axonal injury.

OBJECTIVE: Facial emotion recognition impairment has been well documented in patients with traumatic brain injury. Studies exploring the neural substrates involved in such deficits have implicated specific grey matter structures (e.g. orbitofrontal regions), as well as diffuse white matter damage. Our study aims to clarify whether different types of injuries (i.e. focal vs. diffuse) will lead to different types of impairments on facial emotion recognition tasks, as no study has directly compared these patients. METHODS: The present study examined performance and response patterns on a facial

E-cigarette Blast Injury: Complex Facial Fractures and Pneumocephalus.

Electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes or e-cigs) are becoming a popular method of recreational nicotine use over recent years. The growth of new brands and devices has been outpacing the FDA's ability to regulate them. As a result, some of these devices fail without warning, most likely from malfunction of the lithium-ion batteries that are in close proximity to volatile compounds within the device. Failures have occurred during both use and storage of the devices or their components. The subsequent injuries from several of these events, including full thickness burns requiring gra

Characteristics of Cervical Spine Injury in Pediatric Patients With Facial Fractures.

OVERVIEW: Cervical spine injury may present with pediatric patients having sustained fractures of the craniofacial skeleton. Management considerations of the cervical spine often take priority to the fractures of the facial skeleton. The goal of this study was to examine this subset of patients with a focus on initial presentation and need for intervention. METHODS: A retrospective review from 2000 to 2012 of all facial fractures in patients ≤ 18 years at a level 1 trauma center was performed. Patient demographics, location of fractures, and the presence of a cervical spine injury were collec

How do I manage an acute injury to the facial nerve?

Paralysis of the facial nerve is a cause of considerable functional and aesthetic disfigurement. Damage to the upper trunk can result in eye complications with the risk of exposure keratitis. Numerous factors influence the therapeutic strategy: the cause of the injury, the time elapsed since injury, functional impairment, and the likelihood of recovery. We discuss the management of an acute injury to the facial nerve and focus on the surgical options.
