Interstitial cystitis: a phenotype and rare variant exome sequencing study.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a poorly understood and underdiagnosed syndrome of chronic bladder/pelvic pain with urinary frequency and urgency. Conflicting data exist regarding associated phenotypes, and little is known of its genetic aetiology. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control analysis of electronic medical record (EMR) and retrospective case-control analysis of exome sequencing (ES) to identify phenotypes related to and rare variant risk factors for IC/BPS. Retrospective EMR data were collected from a national network of research site

A possible mechanism of eighteen patient deaths caused by interactions of sorivudine, a new antiviral drug, with oral 5-fluorouracil prodrugs.

A toxicokinetic study was performed using rats to investigate the possible mechanism of 18 acute deaths in Japanese patients with cancer and herpes zoster by interactions of the new oral antiviral drug, sorivudine (SRV), with one of the oral 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) prodrugs within 40 days after approval of the use of SRV. Tegafur, an anticancer 5-FU prodrug suggested to be used by most of the patients who died, and SRV were orally administered to rats simultaneously once daily. All of these rats died within 10 days, whereas rats given SRV or tegafur alone under the same dosage conditions showed

Various Protein Receptor Functionality in Wound Healing.

INTRODUCTION: The intricate biological process of wound healing encompasses several cellular activities, including proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and immunological responses. Central to these actions are protein receptors that facilitate cell signaling pathways essential for tissue repair. Various receptor types such as integrins, toll-like receptors (TLRs), G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), and RIPK3 govern these functions. This research aims to evaluate the current technology for measuring and modifying receptors, clarify the functions of differe

Coordinated Primary-Care Access in Rural and Suburban Alberta, with a Contextual Comparison to Rural Wyoming: A Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis of Community Pharmacist-Family Physician Care Models.

Background/Objectives: Primary-care access in Alberta, Canada, is shaped by geography, attachment, timeliness, continuity, and local service capacity. Rural communities may face travel burden, workforce fragility, and intermittent services, whereas suburban communities may have nearby facilities but still experience delayed access, low attachment, and fragmented episodic care. Rural Wyoming has some similar geographic and workforce constraints, although the jurisdictions differ in financing, regulation, and pharmacist scope. This systematic review and narrative synthesis examined evidence on c

Campylobacter Colonisation of Poultry Slaughtered at Nigerian Slaughterhouses: Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Risk of Zoonotic Transmission.

Zoonotic Campylobacter species (ZCS), particularly C. jejuni and C. coli, cause major foodborne gastroenteritis and poultry is the principal reservoirs. However, there is limited data on Campylobacter transmission risk practices and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Nigeria. Therefore, this study determined the prevalence, AMR, and risk practices aiding Campylobacter transmission in two major slaughterhouses processing poultry carcasses in Enugu State, Nigeria. Four hundred poultry faecal samples were analysed for zoonotic Campylobacter organisms using standard protocols. Antimicrobial resista

Ethanol is indispensable for virucidal hand antisepsis: memorandum from the alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) Task Force, WHO Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety, and the Commission for Hospital Hygiene and Infection Prevention (KRINKO), Robert Koch Institute, Berlin, Germany.

BACKGROUND: The approval of ethanol by the Biocidal Products Regulation has been under evaluation since 2007. This follows concern over alcohol uptake from ethanol-based hand rubs (EBHR). If ethanol is classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), then this would affect infection prevention and control practices. AIM: A review was performed to prove that ethanol is toxicological uncritical and indispensable for hand antisepsis because of its unique activity against non-enveloped viruses and thus the resulting lack of alternatives. Therefore, the

A dataset for multi-sensor drone detection.

The use of small and remotely controlled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), referred to as drones, has increased dramatically in recent years, both for professional and recreative purposes. This goes in parallel with (intentional or unintentional) misuse episodes, with an evident threat to the safety of people or facilities [1]. As a result, the detection of UAV has also emerged as a research topic [2]. Most of the existing studies on drone detection fail to specify the type of acquisition device, the drone type, the detection range, or the employed dataset. The lack of proper UAV detection stud

Cleaning and disinfection of equipment for gastrointestinal endoscopy. Report of a Working Party of the British Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy Committee.

Two per cent glutaraldehyde is the most commonly used disinfectant in endoscopy units within the UK. Unfortunately adverse reactions to glutaraldehyde are common among endoscopy personnel and the Health and Safety Commission has recommended substantial reductions in atmospheric levels of glutaraldehyde in order to comply with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations, 1994. The Working Party addressed ways of eliminating or minimising exposure to glutaraldehyde in endoscopy units by reviewing alternative disinfectants and the use of automated washer/disinfectors. Alternatives t

Association of Brain Reward Learning Response With Harm Avoidance, Weight Gain, and Hypothalamic Effective Connectivity in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

IMPORTANCE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with adolescent onset, severe low body weight, and high mortality as well as high harm avoidance. The brain reward system could have an important role in the perplexing drive for thinness and food avoidance in AN. OBJECTIVE: To test whether brain reward learning response to taste in adolescent AN is altered and associated with treatment response, striatal-hypothalamic connectivity, and elevated harm avoidance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cross-sectional multimodal brain imaging study, adolescents and young adults with AN were mat

Antimicrobial use in pig herds in Ireland: analysis of a national database (2019-2023).

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human and animal pathogens remains a global One-Health threat. The associations between antimicrobial use (AMU) and the evolution and dissemination of AMR bacteria, and their resistance genes, highlight the importance of monitoring and regulating AMU. Here, we present an analysis of national monitoring data of AMU in pig facilities in Ireland from 2019 to 2023 via the recently established National AMU Database. AMU was measured using two metrics (mg per corrected population units (mg/PCU) and defined daily dose (DDDvet/PCU)). Temporal trend models

Safety of tubal ligation by minilaparotomy provided by clinical officers versus assistant medical officers: study protocol for a noninferiority randomized controlled trial in Tanzanian women.

BACKGROUND: Female sterilization by tubal ligation is a safe, extremely effective, and permanent way to limit childbearing. It is the most popular modern contraceptive method worldwide. The simplest way to provide tubal ligation is by a procedure called minilaparotomy, generally performed with the client under local anesthesia with systemic sedation and analgesia. In Tanzania, unmet need for family planning is high and has declined little in the past decade. Access to tubal ligation is limited throughout the country, in large part because of a lack of trained providers. Clinical officers (COs)

TRPV4 controls circadian and pathological ocular hypertension.

Ocular hypertension (OHT) caused by mechanical stress and chronic glucocorticoid exposure reduces the hydraulic permeability of the conventional outflow pathway and increases the risk for irreversible vision loss, yet healthy individuals experience nightly intraocular pressure (IOP) elevations without adverse lifetime effects. It is not known how mechanosensation regulates physiological vs. pathological OHT nor how it impacts permeability of the principal drainage pathway through the trabecular meshwork (TM). We report that OHT induced by the circadian rhythm, occlusion of the iridocorneal ang
