A simple chemical method has been devised for deliberate incorporation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) within mesoporous nanosilica (mSiO2) matrix to yield zinc oxide nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous nanosilica (ZnO@mSiO2). ZnO@mSiO2 inhibited the growth of four strains of fungi in a dose dependant manner. A series of biochemical assays revealed generation of oxidative stress from ZnO@mSiO2 for such biocidal response. We proposed transient superoxide and its subsequent conversion to H2O2 played a pivotal role behind such biocidal response as revealed from our systematic evaluation. This

Interleukin 17A (IL-17) production by peripheral blood neutrophils was examined in patients with fungal keratitis and in uninfected individuals in southern India, which has high levels of airborne Aspergillus and Fusarium conidia. Il17a gene expression and intracellular IL-17 were detected in all groups, although levels were significantly elevated in neutrophils from patients with keratitis. There were no significant differences in plasma IL-17 and IL-23 between patients with keratitis and uninfected individuals; however, combined data from all groups showed a correlation between the percentag

BACKGROUND: Invasive mold infections (IMIs) such as aspergillosis, mucormycosis, fusariosis, and lomentosporiosis are associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in immunocompromised patients, with mortality rates as high as 40% to 80%. Outcomes could be substantially improved with early initiation of appropriate antifungal therapy, yet early diagnosis remains difficult to establish and often requires multidisciplinary teams evaluating clinical and radiological findings plus supportive mycological findings. Universal digital high resolution melting analysis (U-dHRM) may enable r

BACKGROUND: Fusarium and allied genera (fusarioid) species are common colonizers of roots and aerial plant parts, or act as phytopathogens in forestry and horticultural or grain crops. However, they can also cause a wide range of infections in humans, including onychomycosis, cutaneous and invasive infections. Fusarioid keratitis is characterized by an infection of the cornea with a suppurative and ulcerative appearance, which may cause damage to vision and permanent blindness. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of fusarioid species, biofilm formation and antifungal

BACKGROUND: Survivors of combat trauma can have long and challenging recoveries, which may be complicated by infection. Invasive fungal infections are a rare but serious complication with limited treatment options. Currently, aggressive surgical debridement is the standard of care, with antifungal agents used adjunctively with uncertain efficacy. Anecdotal evidence suggests that antifungal agents may be ineffective in the absence of surgical debridement, and studies have yet to correlate antifungal concentrations in plasma and wounds.

Outbreak of exogenous Fusarium endophthalmitis after cataract surgery was evaluated. Twenty patients developed postoperative endophthalmitis. In 19 eyes, pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) was performed, in 14 cases (74 %) with primary intraocular lens explantation. In one case, the PPV was not performed because of poor general condition of the patient. Symptoms of endophthalmitis (damaged vision, iritis, tyndallization in anterior chamber, hypopyon) occurred at intervals of 16-79 days (mean 31.3 days). Fungal etiology was documented in 12 eyes (60 %). Fusarium oxysporum was evidenced by culture and/

Burns are among the most devastating traumatic injuries. The primary risk of infection stems from disruption of the primary barrier, the skin. For patients with deep burns, loss of the dermis is the main risk factor for systemic bacterial and fungal infections, which occur in 70% and 20%-25% of cases, respectively. Meanwhile, viral infections occur in 5%-10% of cases. Fungal infections are associated with mortality rates ranging from 33% to 60%. This study is a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis conducted at the Centro Nacional de Investigación y Atención de Quemados at the Instituto Naci

BACKGROUND: Fungal pathogens are ubiquitous microorganisms that are implicated in a wide range of infections, affecting individuals with underlying health conditions and immune suppression therapy; however, immunocompetent individuals may also be at risk. Among these infections, many are caused by molds and yeasts other than Candida and are recognized in clinical practice, such as aspergillosis, mucormycosis, fusariosis, phaeohyphomycosis, and basidiobolomycosis, among others, each presents different clinical manifestations and requires clinical management specific to the site of involvement.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated invasive pulmonary aspergillosis presents a diagnostic challenge due to its non-specific clinical/ imaging features, as well as the fact that the proposed clinically diagnostic algorithms do not necessarily apply to COVID-19 patients. In addition, Fusarium spp. is a rare cause of opportunistic life-threatening fungal infections. Disseminated Fusarium infection in an immunocompromised host is intractable, with a high likelihood of resulting mortality. To our knowledge, this is the first case of secondary pulmonary infection by Fusarium
