The workshop considered 5 questions related to oral lesions, HIV phenotypes, and the management of HIV-related disease, with a focus on evidence and challenges in resource-poor settings. First, are oral lesions unique with respect to geographic location or phenotype? Second, how useful would an oral lesion index be to predict HIV in resource-poor countries with no access to CD4 counts or viral load? Third, what are the latest methods and delivery modes for drugs used to treat oral lesions associated with HIV? Fourth, what is the role of the oral health care worker in rapid diagnostic testing f

Although the incidence of HIV-associated dementia (HAD) has declined, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) remain a significant health problem despite use of highly active antiretroviral therapy. In addition, the incidence and/or severity of HAND/HAD are increased with concomitant use of drugs of abuse, such as cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine. Furthermore, exposure to most drugs of abuse increases brain levels of dopamine, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of HIV. This review evaluates the potential role of dopamine in the potentiation of HAND/HAD by drugs of abus

BACKGROUND: A large proportion of the 2.5 million new adult HIV infections that occurred worldwide in 2007 were in stable couples. Feasible and acceptable strategies to improve HIV prevention in a conjugal context are scarce. In the preparatory phase of the ANRS 12127 Prenahtest multi-site HIV prevention trial, we assessed the acceptability of couple-oriented post-test HIV counseling (COC) and men's involvement within prenatal care services, among pregnant women, male partners and health care workers in Cameroon, Dominican Republic, Georgia and India.

BACKGROUND: Oxidant stress contributes to the pathogenesis of multiple conditions and can be assessed by measuring plasma F(2)-isoprostane concentrations. We hypothesized that oxidant stress is associated with plasma homocysteine concentration and risk factors for atherosclerosis in HIV-infected women.
METHODS: We measured plasma F(2)-isoprostane concentrations in a cross-sectional study of 249 HIV-infected women attending the Bronx (NY, USA) site of the Women's Interagency HIV Study and assessed associations with plasma homocysteine concentration and other metabolic parameters by linear regr

Persons coinfected with tuberculosis (TB) and HIV are at high risk of death, in part due to suboptimal utilization of HIV-specific health care. We sought to better understand HIV-associated health care utilization and mortality in a retrospective cohort of TB/HIV coinfected cases reported in North Carolina 1993-2003. In this cohort, HIV was newly diagnosed during TB presentation for 34.2% of coinfected patients. Patients had advanced HIV (median CD4 104 cells/mm(3)) at TB diagnosis. Of 260 patients previously known to be HIV positive, 32.3% had seen a physician for HIV care in the previous 6 m

In the pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) era, clinical trials showed that interferon (IFN) treatment was able to delay AIDS progression and prolong survival. Along with HAART, ancillary use of IFN during primary infection and before HAART therapy initiation has been effective. Also endogenous IFN may positively affect the progression of HIV infection, as suggested in GB virus type C (GBV-C) coinfected patients. In this pilot study, we tried to prevent rebound of HIV replication in patients who interrupted HAART by covering the drug-free time with administration of pegylated IFN

INTRODUCTION: Some cases of HIV+ patients with unexplained vascular disease have been reported and many studies are being performed to determine whether HIV infected individuals have an increased cardio-vascular risk (CVR). We propose: to describe lipid profile of untreated HIV+ patients and to compare it with the HIV- and to assess whether any of the lipid abnormalities influence in CVR estimation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 407 homosexual males: 251 untreated HIV+ and 156 HIV-. Biochemistry parameters: Total cholesterol (CHOL), HDL-cholesterol (HDL), VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol (LDL), trig

Latinos in the United States are disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS. They accounted for 20.4% of the AIDS cases reported in 2003, despite the fact that they represent 13.3% of the civilian non-institutional population of the United States. Thus it is important to identify ways to increase HIV testing among Latinos engaging in high risk behaviors. One approach that has been proposed for increasing HIV testing is the "bundling" of HIV prevention interventions with other relevant services. This study examined whether offering HIV testing with screening for other conditions would increase HIV

Patients with HIV infection have a high risk of bacterial infection. A high index of suspicion for common and less common bacterial infections is needed, together with a flexible approach to diagnosis and therapy. Many infections are characterized by relapse after therapy; long-term treatment is frequently required.

A crucial requirement in the rational design of a prophylactic vaccine against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is to establish whether or not protective immunity can occur following natural infection. The immune response to HIV infection is characterized by very vigorous HIV-specific cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) activity. We have identified four HIV-1 and HIV-2 cross-reactive peptide epitopes, presented to CTL from HIV-infected Gambians by HLA-B35 (the most common Gambian class I HLA molecule). These peptides were used to elicit HIV-specific CTLs from three out of six repeatedly exposed

The role of natural killer (NK) cells and their inducible counterparts, lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells in AIDS with regard to HIV-1 viral immunosurveillance and the control of secondary opportunistic disease has yet to be established. In this study, we have demonstrated that LAK cells derived from all HIV-1+ groups showed striking increases in their capacity to lyse HIV-1-infected U-937 cells relative to their uninfected U-937 counterparts. Surprisingly, similarly derived LAK cells from healthy seronegative controls showed no differences in their lysis of HIV-1-infected versus uninfec

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of impaired kidney function (eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2) is higher in people with HIV (PWH) compared to the general population. We aimed to quantify differences in estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) between PWH and HIV-negative individuals in the French population-based CONSTANCES cohort, considering socioeconomic, lifestyle factors, and potentially nephrotoxic/eGFR-modifying drug exposure.
DESIGN: We analyzed baseline data (2012-2021) from the prospective French national cohort study CONSTANCES, including 220 000 participants aged 18-69. PWH were identified

BACKGROUND: Radiological imaging is crucial for diagnosing hepatic cystic echinococcosis (HCE) and assessing complications. Case studies suggest HCE with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) co-infection is associated with larger, more multilocular cysts, increased extrahepatic dissemination, rupture, secondary infection and biliary invasion.
OBJECTIVES: To compare the radiological presentation of HCE in HIV-positive (HIV+) and HIV-negative (HIV-) patients and determine whether HIV co-infection influences imaging features.
METHOD: Pre-operative imaging (chest X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI of

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation (KT) from donors with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) to recipients with HIV (HIV D+/R+) is noninferior to KT from donors without HIV (HIV D-/R+) with regard to safety. However, there may be differences in posttransplant infections.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of the HOPE in Action KT Study (NCT02602262) comparing the time to first clinically relevant infection within 24 months posttransplantation in 99 HIV D+/R+ versus 99 HIV D-/R+. Secondary outcomes included incidence rates, infection-related death, and timing of clinically relevant in

Between 8%-39% of people living with HIV (PLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa have a depressive disorder (DD). Despite considerable gains in the treatment of PLWH, DD is increasingly recognised as a threat to successful treatment and prevention. PLWH incur higher health-related costs than the general population due to chronic care management needs. We aimed to estimate the combined economic burden of DD and HIV amongst PLWH and explore their mechanisms of coping with high-of-pocket health expenditure. This was a cost of illness study nested in a cluster-randomized trial that assessed the effectiveness

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis/human immunodeficiency virus (TB/HIV) coinfection is associated with advanced HIV disease and variable responses to antiretroviral therapy (ART).
OBJECTIVES: We examined whether baseline HIV severity markers, ART regimes, or human genetic variants influenced HIV-1 virologic suppression in HIV-associated TB.
METHODS: We included TB/HIV participants from Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis (RePORT)-Brazil study, who received standard TB therapy and antiretroviral treatment. The primary endpoint was HIV-1 virologic suppression (≤ 1,000 copies/mL)

The Ligurian HIV Network, based on HL7 CDA r2, is an Italian regional infrastructure for HIV surveillance and control. To expand this network to a European level, the alignment with the EHDS and the EEHRxF, which standardize EHR data exchange, becomes essential. EU-funded projects like XpanDH are developing HL7 FHIR IGs to support this framework. Therefore, the extension of the Ligurian HIV Network requires an architectural rethink, with the introduction of the HL7 FHIR format instead of CDA r2, ensuring compliance with European standards.

The intestinal immune compartment plays a central role in HIV pathogenesis, serving as an early site for viral replication and a significant reservoir for latent infection. Despite the success of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in suppressing plasma viremia, HIV persists indefinitely in latently infected cells, commonly found in the intestinal tract due to its unique immunological and structural environment. Targeting HIV-infected cells that persist in the intestinal tract is an important consideration for therapeutic strategies and is also important when considering an HIV cure. This review desc

Since its initial detection in the 1980s, AIDS has become a significant global health threat, disproportionately affecting women. Stigma constitutes the substantial barrier to accessing healthcare for women living with HIV (WLWH). This scoping review based on the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework aimed to provide evidence-based guidance for clinical caregivers to develop intervention strategies and assess their effectiveness. From database inception to May 2023, research on stigma interventions for WLWH was searched in databases including Embase (OVID), MEDLINE (OVID), CINAHL (E
