Muscular Strength and Cardiovascular Disease: AN UPDATED STATE-OF-THE-ART NARRATIVE REVIEW.

This review discusses the associations of muscular strength (MusS) with cardiovascular disease (CVD), CVD-related death, and all-cause mortality, as well as CVD risk factors, such as metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. We then briefly review the role of resistance exercise training in modulating CVD risk factors and incident CVD.The role of MusS has been investigated over the years, as it relates to the risk to develop CVD and CVD risk factors. Reduced MusS, also known as dynapenia, has been associated with increased risk for CVD, CVD-related mortality, and all-cause morta

The Krukenberg Procedure: A Scoping Review.

Background: The Krukenberg procedure involves surgically separating the radius and ulnar to create a pincer-like grasp, providing an alternative for upper limb amputees in resource-limited settings where advanced myoelectric prosthetics are inaccessible. It restores prehension and potentially offers patients' autonomy in daily tasks. This review explores the patient demographics; indications; surgical techniques and outcomes of published reports of the Krukenberg procedure. Methods: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines across PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane, Web of Science, EMB

Glowing Sucker Octopus (Stauroteuthis syrtensis)-Inspired Soft Robotic Gripper for Underwater Self-Adaptive Grasping and Sensing.

A soft gripper inspired by the glowing sucker octopus (Stauroteuthis syrtensis)' highly evolved grasping capability enabled by the umbrella-shaped dorsal and ventral membrane between each arm is presented here, comprising of a 3D-printed linkage mechanism used to actuate a modular mold silicone-casting soft suction disc to deform. The soft gripper grasp can lift objects using the suction generated by the pump in the soft disc. Moreover, the protruded funnel-shaped end of the deformed suctorial mouth can adapt to smooth and rough surfaces. Furthermore, when the gripper contacts the submerged ta

Wrist Injuries in Tennis Players: A Narrative Review.

The wrist/hand complex forms the crucial final link in the kinetic chain between the body and the racquet and therefore has a number of important roles in the production of all tennis strokes. However, the internal and external loads that are created at the wrist during these strokes have the potential to contribute to pain and injury. Therefore, the purposes of this narrative review are to (1) determine the extent of the problem of wrist pain/injury in tennis players, (2) identify bony and soft tissue structures of the wrist that are susceptible to damage as a result of tennis play and (3) ex

The interosseous muscles: the foundation of hand function.

The interosseous muscles of the hand can be thought of as the cornerstone of hand function, as they provide a "foundation" for all intrinsic and extrinsic hand movements. Innervated by the ulnar nerve and organized in dorsal and palmar layers, these pivotal muscles have small excursion yet great impact on finger balance, grip, and pinch function, particularly when impaired by denervation and/or contracture. This article gives an overview of the functional anatomy and pathologic dysfunction of the interosseous muscles within the context of this Hand Clinics issue on the intrinsic muscular funct

Functional sensibility assessment. Part II: Effects of sensory improvement on precise pinch force modulation after transverse carpal tunnel release.

Patients with median nerve compression at the carpal tunnel often have poor sensory afferents. Without adequate sensory modulation control, these patients frequently exhibit clumsy performance and excessive force output in the affected hand. We analyzed precision grip function after the sensory recovery of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) who underwent carpal tunnel release (CTR). Thirteen CTS patients were evaluated using a custom-designed pinch device and conventional sensory tools before and after CTR to measure sensibility, maximum pinch strength, and anticipated pinch force adju

The added value of measuring thumb and finger strength when comparing strength measurements in hypoplastic thumb patients.

BACKGROUND: When interventions to the hand are aimed at improving function of specific fingers or the thumb, the RIHM (Rotterdam Intrinsic Hand Myometer) is a validated tool and offers more detailed information to assess strength of the involved joints besides grip and pinch measurements. METHODS: In this study, strength was measured in 65 thumbs in 40 patients diagnosed with thumb hypoplasia. These 65 thumbs were classified according to Blauth. Longitudinal radial deficiencies were also classified. The strength measurements comprised of grip, tip, tripod and key pinch. Furthermore palmar abd

The Modified Otago Exercises Prevent Grip Strength Deterioration Among Older Fallers in the Malaysian Falls Assessment and Intervention Trial (MyFAIT).

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Exercise-based interventions, such as the Otago Exercise Program (OEP), are effective in preventing falls in the older adult. Previous studies evaluating the OEP have determined falls, lower limb strength, or balance outcomes but with lack of assessment of hand grip strength. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of OEP on hand grip strength alongside mobility and balance outcomes. METHODS: This was a single-center, prospective, and single-blind randomized controlled trial conducted at the University Malaya Medical Centre. Patients older than 65 years p

Patient-Reported Outcomes Can Serve as a Functional Substitute for Grip Strength.

Background  Grip strength has traditionally been seen as an objective measurement of hand function, while the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Upper Extremity (PROMIS UE) has emerged recently as a common patient-reported outcome metric for similar purposes. The primary objective of this study was to determine if a correlation exists between grip strength, PROMIS UE, and Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH) scores in hand and upper extremity clinic patients. Methods  PROMIS UE, Pain Interference (PI), and Depression (D), as well as QuickDASH were

Targeted therapies and autophagy: new insights from chronic myeloid leukemia.

Clinical studies generally reveal a trend of variation in the reported prevalence of the palmaris longus (PL) muscle absence. The aim of this study was to find an answer to the question of whether the congenital absence of tendon would affect hand functions or not. A total of 585 subjects, comprised of 305 males and 280 females, were included in our study. Mean age was 8.9 ± 1.4 standard deviation within a range of 6-11. For both sexes, the groups were divided further into three subgroups including 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11 years of age ranges. The grip strength of each hand and pinch strength of al

Higher handgrip strength is linked to higher salience ventral attention functional network segregation in older adults.

Converging evidence suggests that handgrip strength is linked to cognition in older adults, and this may be subserved by shared age-related changes in brain function and structure. However, the interplay among handgrip strength, brain functional connectivity, and cognitive function remains poorly elucidated. Hence, our study sought to examine these relationships in 148 community-dwelling older adults. Specifically, we examined functional segregation, a measure of functional brain organization sensitive to ageing and cognitive decline, and its associations with handgrip strength and cognitive f

Factors associated with handgrip strength across the life course: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strength is essential for healthy ageing. Handgrip strength (HGS) has been recommended by expert bodies as the preferred measure of muscle strength, in addition to being considered a strong predictor of overall health. Cross-sectional studies have shown several potential factors associated with HGS, but a systematic review of factors predicting HGS over time has not previously been conducted. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature on the factors associated with adult HGS [at follow-up(s) or its rate of change] across the life course. METHODS: Searc

Development of Medical Shark Skin Forceps: Improved Grasping Power and Easy Manipulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Important safety requirements for forceps used in surgical procedures are the ability to stably grasp fine tissue and to cause minimal tissue damage. Shark skin has the structural feature of circumpolar scales, which increase the frictional force of the scales by roughening their surface. We have developed and patented medical forceps with a shark skin pattern placed on the tip surfaces. The aim of this study was to examine the safety and efficacy of the shark skin forceps compared with existing forceps, both fundamentally and clinically. METHODS: To evaluate grippi

Analytical-stochastic model of motor difficulty for three-dimensional manipulation tasks.

Multiple models exist for the evaluation of human motor performance; some of these rely on the Index of Difficulty (ID), a measure to evaluate the difficulty associated to simple reaching tasks. Despite the numerous applications of the ID in reaching movements, the existing formulations are functions of the geometrical features of the task and do not consider the motor behaviour of subjects performing repetitive movements in interaction with the environment. Variability of movements, length of trajectories, subject-specific strength and skill, and required interaction with the environment are

BaroTac: Barometric Three-Axis Tactile Sensor with Slip Detection Capability.

Tactile sensors for robotic applications enhance the performance of robotic end-effectors as they ca n provide tactile information to operate various tasks. In particular, tactile sensors can measure multi-axial force and detect slip can aid the end-effectors in grasping diverse objects in an unstructured environment. We propose BaroTac, which measures three-axial forces and detects slip with a barometric pressure sensor chip (BPSC) for robotic applications. A BPSC is an off-the-shelf commercial sensor that is inexpensive, easy to customize, robust, and simple to use. While a single BPSC-based

Hybrid Jamming for Bioinspired Soft Robotic Fingers.

This article describes a novel design of bioinspired soft robotic fingers based upon hybrid jamming principle-integrated layer jamming and particle jamming. The finger combines a fiber-reinforced soft pneumatic actuator with a hybrid jamming substrate. Taking advantage of different characteristics of layer jamming and particle jamming, the substrate is designed with three chambers filled with layers (function as bones) and two chambers filled with particles (function as joints). The layer regions and particle regions are interlocked with each other to guarantee load transfer from the fixed fin
