Journal of obstetric, gynecologic, and neonatal nursing : JOGNN2002eng
OBJECTIVE: To elucidate mothers' experiences related to separation from their newborns during their 1st week of life, when the newborns had been transferred to a neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU).
DESIGN: A phenomenologic-hermeneutic approach. Tape-recorded narrative interviews were conducted 1 to 2 months postpartum in the participants' homes. The mothers were asked to describe and reflect upon their experiences during the time when they were separated from their children.
PARTICIPANTS: Eight women whose full-term newborns had been treated in the NICU for between 2 and 10 days and then de

Access to legally permitted abortion depends not only on the legal framework, but also on policy implementation, health system organisation, and professional practices. In Brazil, abortion is legally permitted in specific circumstances, but access remains highly limited. This qualitative study aimed to understand how Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals in São Paulo deal with cases eligible for abortion in everyday practice, focusing on conditions that constrain or enable the realisation of reproductive rights. Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with professionals engaged wi

Despite the benefits of psychotherapy to improve mental health outcomes, therapy remains significantly underutilized among Black Americans. Yet, once therapy is initiated, Black clients experience mental health outcomes comparable to those in the general population, underscoring potential barriers to engagement. To address this gap, our qualitative study explored factors that contribute to client engagement throughout the therapeutic process, including core therapeutic skills related to therapist qualities, provider-client alliances, and nontherapeutic factors that shape the client experience.

BACKGROUND: Children with serious illness, including life-shortening and life-threatening illnesses, live and grow while dealing with the possibility of health decline and death. Pediatric palliative care teams support children with serious illness and their families but must do so with a paucity of research to help them understand the experiences of the children in their care.
AIMS: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of children with serious life-shortening or life-threatening illness; one of the findings from this study, children's experiences of clinical environmen

PURPOSE: How the body is experienced in the context of weight stigma is largely unexplored among women with binge eating disorder (BED) and higher weight. The aim of this study was to investigate how weight stigma can manifest as embodied meaning.
METHODS: Eight patients participated in qualitative interviews. The data analysis was inspired by Van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological method. Habits, understood as unspoken patterns of behavior shaped by social and material contexts, was a central analytic concept.
RESULTS: The overarching finding was participants feeling "Visible yet Invisibl

The stigma surrounding schizophrenia, heavily shaped by media portrayals, significantly affects individuals' lives, often delaying help-seeking and treatment. These negative representations can lead to social rejection, isolation, and worsened mental health outcomes. This qualitative study delves into the lived experiences of individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia, exploring how public perceptions of mental disorders, particularly schizophrenia, influence their health journeys and daily lives. Rooted in Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology, the study involved in-depth interviews with 10 parti

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of persisting post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) on work identity, and to explore how work identity relates to the acceptance and coping mechanisms in individuals experiencing PPCS.
METHODS: Twenty-three in-depth semi-structured interviews with persons suffering from PPCS for > 6 months, who attempted to return to work within the last 6 months. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis combined with hermeneutical phenomenological approach.
RESULTS: We identified one global theme "Me and my work identity". Participants expressed a profound connection between w

Background: Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) results in multiple, complex health-related risks and associated fear of movement (kinesiophobia). Therefore, the purpose of this research study was to examine how a holistic, embodied, and performative movement program (EDS-HEART) can affect body schema, physical and mental health, and lifestyle, which contribute to the joy of movement and physical activity participation among adult women with hEDS. Methods: This was a hermeneutic, phenomenological, quasi-experimental, and community-based research study among six women with hEDS, who parti

Student mental health nurses have greater patient contact than registered nurses, and this is appreciated by patients. This phenomenological study explored the impact of patients and student mental health nurses' time shared on forensic units for men carrying a personality disorder diagnosis. Phenomenology was the underpinning philosophy of this research. Patients and student mental health nurses in forensic hospitals participated in unstructured hermeneutic interviews. The time students and patients shared together was considered a gift, enabling them to feel that they were "just people" and

BACKGROUND: Serious illnesses, such as cancer, bring the threat of loss of health and life closer. This may compromise spiritual well-being. Addressing patients' spirituality is essential in nursing care. Therefore, nursing records should reflect, clarify, and enable spiritual-care follow-up.
AIM: The aim of this study is to explore how spiritual care is expressed in nursing records in cancer care.
METHOD: This study adopted a hermeneutic approach, and a qualitative content analysis was used to explore the nursing records of 43 inpatients with cancer from Norway. Ethical approval was obtaine

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment poses a significant challenge following critical illness in the intensive care unit. A knowledge gap exists concerning how patients experience cognitive impairments.
OBJECTIVES: The aim was to explore patients' and relatives' experiences of patients' cognitive impairment due to critical illness following an intensive care unit admission.
METHODS: A qualitative multicentre study was conducted in Denmark with 3- and 6-month follow-ups using single and dyadic interviews. A phenomenological hermeneutic approach was adopted using a Ricoeur-inspired textual in-dept

Transcribed interviews were analysed based on a phenomenological-hermeneutic method, inspired by Paul Ricoeur's philosophy on narrative and interpretation.
RESULTS: Interviews of eight patients with ca

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) has never comprehensively been examined from a lived experience perspective. Patients generally have a poorer quality of life than people with other chronic pain conditions. This study aimed to understand the essence of living with CRPS. Data were collected from 17 patients via in-depth interviews. Hermeneutic discussions with four health professionals generated deeper insights. Internet blogs and a book containing patient stories were included for theme verification and triangulation. CRPS is seen as a war-like experience and five themes were identified w

METHODS: This was a qualitative study based on Gadamer's hermeneutic phenomenology. Twenty-one semistructured interviews were carried out. Inductive analysis was used to find themes based on
