Identifying predictors of early non-recovery in a compensation setting: The Whiplash Outcome Study.

CONTEXT: People with Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD) often experience pain and disability for extended periods of time. A large proportion of these people will seek treatment through a compensation process. Rarely is data related to people's health collected within the compensation process making it difficult to identify those that are at risk of delayed recovery and appropriately direct interventions. STUDY OBJECTIVE: To compare people with WAD who have recovered with those that have not, within 3 months of injury and identify potential predictors of poorer health and non-recovery to info

Injuries among children with autism spectrum disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We compared risk of injury among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to those without ASD, adjusting for demographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We used claims data from 2001 to 2009 from a commercial health plan in the United States. A validated ASD case identification algorithm identified 33,565 children (ages 0-20 years) with ASD and 138,876 children without. Counting process models tested the association between ASD status and injury episodes with separate regressions run for children during different age periods. RESULTS: Unadjusted results demonstrated th

Characteristics of patients initiating raloxifene compared to those initiating bisphosphonates.

BACKGROUND: Both raloxifene and bisphosphonates are indicated for the prevention and treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis, however these medications have different efficacy and safety profiles. It is plausible that physicians would prescribe these agents to optimize the benefit/risk profile for individual patients. The objective of this study was to compare demographic and clinical characteristics of patients initiating raloxifene with those of patients initiating bisphosphonates for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. METHODS: This study was conducted using a retrospective coho

Enhancing antidepressant safety surveillance: comparative analysis of adverse drug reaction signals in spontaneous reporting and healthcare claims databases.

Background/Objective: Spontaneous reporting systems (SRS) such as the Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS) are limited in their ability to detect adverse drug reaction (ADR) signals due to their limited data on drug use. Conversely, the national health insurance claim (NHIC) data include drug use information for all qualifying residents. This study aimed to compare ADR signal profiles for antidepressants between KAERS and NHIC, evaluating the extent to which detected signals belong to common ADRs and labeling information. Materials and Methods: ADR signal detection in KAERS and NHIC da

Early predictors of occupational back reinjury: results from a prospective study of workers in Washington State.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective population-based cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To identify early predictors of self-reported occupational back reinjury within 1 year after work-related back injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Back injuries are the costliest and most prevalent disabling occupational injuries in the United States. A substantial proportion of workers with back injuries have reinjuries after returning to work, yet there are few studies of risk factors for occupational back reinjuries. METHODS: We aimed to identify the incidence and early (in the claim) predictors of self-reported back rei

A study of benzodiazepine users claiming drug-induced psychiatric morbidity.

To ascertain whether benzodiazepines (BZDs) cause behavioural side effects other than those already known or trigger latent mental illness processes, the medical records of 32 patients who had submitted claims for BZD-induced side effects to the Swedish Pharmaceutical Insurance (SPI) claims office during 1985-92 were re-assessed by two psychiatrists on the basis of the DSM-IV system to determine whether a psychiatric syndrome existed before, during, or after the prescription of BZDs. Of the 32 case reports entered into the study, 22 concerned women; mean age at the time of SPI claim submission

Data Source Concordance for Infectious Disease Epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: As highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers are eager to make use of a wide variety of data sources, both government-sponsored and alternative, to characterize the epidemiology of infectious diseases. To date, few studies have investigated the strengths and limitations of sources currently being used for such research. These are critical for policy makers to understand when interpreting study findings. METHODS: To fill this gap in the literature, we compared infectious disease reporting for three diseases (measles, mumps, and varicella) across four different data sources:

Why most workers with occupational repetitive trauma do not file for workers' compensation.

Despite the availability of no fault insurance for wage replacement and medical care costs, the majority of workers diagnosed with an occupational disease do not apply for workers' compensation. The objective of the study was to determine the reasons why workers diagnosed with work-related musculoskeletal disease did not apply for workers' compensation benefits. A cross-sectional study of 1598 individuals diagnosed with neck, upper extremity, and low back work-related musculoskeletal disease from April to June 1996 was performed. All individuals were interviewed over the telephone using a stan
