Transcranial direct current stimulation of the rLPFC shifts normative judgments in voluntary cooperation.

Normative judgment is a key capacity for human social norm compliance. Previous studies have revealed that the right lateral prefrontal cortex (rLPFC) is closely related to social norm compliance and that it has proven stimulation effects on behavior in voluntary and sanction-induced norm compliance, but not normative judgments. Nearly all these studies have been based on sanction-induced coordination cooperation, and a number of them have found that rLPFC has no effect on normative judgment with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). However, no research study exists regarding the ef

Maltreated Children's Ability to Make Temporal Judgments Using a Recurring Landmark Event.

This study examined whether maltreated children are capable of judging the location and order of significant events with respect to a recurring landmark event. One hundred sixty-seven 6- to 10-year-old maltreated children were asked whether the current day, their last court visit, and their last change in placement were "near" their birthday and "before or after" their birthday. Children showed some understanding that the target event was "near" and "before" their birthday when their birthday was less than 3 months hence, but were relatively insensitive to preceding birthdays. Therefore, child

Increasing the role of belief information in moral judgments by stimulating the right temporoparietal junction.

Morality plays a vital role in our social life. A vast body of research has suggested that moral judgments rely on cognitive processes mediated by the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ), an area thought to be involved in belief attribution. Here we assessed the role of the rTPJ in moral judgments directly by means of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)--a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that, by applying a weak current to the scalp, allows modulating cortical excitability of the area being stimulated. Participants were randomly and equally assigned to receive anodal stim

Asymmetry in the Collision Judgments of People With Homonymous Field Defects and Left Hemispatial Neglect.

PURPOSE: Although the impact of homonymous visual field defects (HFDs) on mobility has been investigated previously, the emphasis has been on obstacle detection. Relatively little is known about HFD patients' ability to judge collisions once an obstacle is detected. We investigated this using a walking simulator. METHODS: Patients with HFDs (n = 29) and subjects with normal vision (NV; n = 21) were seated in front of a large screen on which a visual simulation of walking was displayed. They made collision judgments for a human figure that appeared for 1 second at lateral offsets from the virt

Social judgments of behavioral versus substance-related addictions: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the concept of addiction has expanded to include many types of problematic repetitive behaviors beyond those related to substance misuse. This trend may have implications for the way that lay people think about addictions and about people struggling with addictive disorders. The aim of this study was to provide a better understanding of how the public understands a variety of substance-related and behavioral addictions. METHODS: A representative sample of 4000 individuals from Alberta, Canada completed an online survey. Participants were randomly assigned to answer quest

Psychiatrists' judgments about antipsychotic benefit and risk outcomes and formulation in schizophrenia treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to quantify psychiatrists' judgments of the benefits and risks of antipsychotic treatments of patients with schizophrenia and to evaluate how patient adherence history affects these judgments. METHODS: Weights assigned by respondents to risks, benefits, and alternative drug formulations in the treatment of schizophrenia were assessed via a Web-based survey by using a discrete-choice experiment. Respondents in the United States and the United Kingdom chose among alternative scenarios characterized by various levels of improvement in positive symptoms, negative sy

The role of causal and intentional judgments in moral reasoning in individuals with high functioning autism.

In the present study, we investigated the ability to assign moral responsibility and punishment in adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS), using non-verbal cartoons depicting an aggression, an accidental harm or a mere coincidence. Participants were asked to evaluate the agent's causal and intentional roles, his responsibility and the punishment he deserves for his action. Adults with HFA/AS did not differ in judgments of suffering and causality from adults with typical development. However, subtle difficulties with judgments of intentional action and moral judgments

College students' awareness of irrational judgments on gambling tasks: a dual-process account.

In 2 studies, the authors examined college students' awareness of irrational judgments on gambling tasks. Participants could express a preference between 2 gambles with equivalent ratios (1:10 vs. 10:100) for Study 1 or no preference for Study 2. Participants also rated their certainty that each response option (i.e., 1:10, 10:100, no preference) was rational (analytically based processing) or irrational (experientially based processing of the ratio information). Only a minority of participants in each study was certain that the only analytically based, rational response was no preference. Tho

Formation of social acceptability judgments and their implications for management of rare and little-known species.

Effective policies for management of rare and little-known species (RLKS) must be not only scientifically valid and cost-effective but also consistent with prevailing social beliefs and values. Limited public awareness of RLKS, however constrains efforts to frame such policies. Lacking public support, resistance to RLKS programs is likely, particularly when other uses and values are affected. The challenge lies in understanding how public judgments are formed, sustained, and altered. Although the lack of public support often is attributed to inadequate understanding of the scientific bases for

Framing discrimination: effects of inclusion versus exclusion mind-sets on stereotypic judgments.

Three studies investigated how inclusion versus exclusion strategies differentially lead to stereotypic decisions. In inclusion strategies, suitable targets are selected from a list of candidates, whereas in exclusion strategies, unsuitable candidates are eliminated. Across 2 separate target domains (Study 1: male and female politicians; Studies 2 and 3: African American and European American basketball players), exclusion strategies, as compared with inclusion strategies, elicited higher levels of both sensitivity stereotyping (i.e., greater difficulty distinguishing among members of stereoty

Psychologists' judgments of psychologically aggressive actions when perpetrated by a husband versus a wife.

Research literature suggests that clinical judgments of men's versus women's behavior and symptoms typically rate the men as more pathological and dangerous. To determine whether this view would extend to assessments of psychologically aggressive actions, two separate versions of a survey listing potentially psychologically abusive behaviors perpetrated by either a wife toward her husband or the identical actions perpetrated by a husband toward his wife were sent to a nationwide sampling of practicing psychologists. Results indicated that psychologists, irrespective of demographics, rated the

[Induction mechanism of shock: applying the etiology in judgment of the cause of death in forensic practice].

In the field of forensic medicine, shock has been identified as a cause of death owing to various kinds of exogenous insults. The etiology and pathogenesis of shock cannot be explained well by the usual gross appearance in medicolegal autopsies, because it is now generally established that the shock is a functional reaction of the vascular system to bodily injury, and that several organs are secondarily impaired during shock. Thus it seemed to forensic pathologists that these morphological changes in several organs after shock did not reveal any significant differences among the causes of deat

Left inferior parietal cortex integrates time and space during collision judgments.

Left inferior parietal lobe lesions can cause perturbation of the space-time plans underlying skilled actions. But does the perceptual integration of spatiotemporal information use the same neural substrate or is the role of the left inferior parietal cortex restricted to visuomotor transformations? We use fMRI and a collision judgment paradigm to examine whether the left inferior parietal cortex integrates temporal and spatial variables in situations in which no complex action and no visuomotor transformation is required. We used a perceptual task in which healthy subjects indicated by simple

Qualitative analysis of value judgments in interpreting cervicovaginal smears using the Bethesda system.

CONTEXT: We hypothesize that there are unrecognized value judgments that influence cytopathologists in interpreting borderline cervicovaginal smears and that these judgments contribute to the well-documented variation among cytopathologists regarding such diagnoses. OBJECTIVE: To identify and map these values. DESIGN: Survey consisting of Kodachromes and histories for 5 borderline smears. Respondents were asked to give their diagnoses, recommendations for treatment, and reasoning. RESULTS: We demonstrated a wide variation in interpretation of borderline smears similar to previous studies. W

The relation of communication to risk judgment and preventive behavior related to lead in tap water.

More and more communities are becoming concerned about health risks posed by lead and other health hazards in their drinking water. Our study, applying the model of innovation diffusion to the adoption of preventive health behaviors, found that reliance on health professionals for information about lead in tap water was associated with residents perceiving risk from this hazard, their sense of efficacy in dealing with it, and their adoption of preventive behaviors. Mass media and pamphlets mailed directly to residents were relatively ineffective. Results suggest that interpersonal channels may

Gender constancy judgments in children with gender identity disorder: evidence for a developmental lag.

Gender constancy judgments in children referred for problems in their gender identity development (N = 206) and controls (N = 95) were compared. On Slaby and Frey's (1975) gender constancy interview, the gender-referred children performed more poorly than the controls at three stage levels: gender identity, gender stability, and gender consistency. On the Boy-Girl Identity Task, a second measure of gender constancy (Emmerich et al., 1977), the gender-referred children also performed more poorly. Gender-referred children who had not attained gender consistency engaged in significantly less same

Assessing same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities: a status report.

This report summarizes state-of-the-art approaches for assessing visual stimulus same/different judgments in individuals with severe intellectual disabilities. Methods are described that permit one to conduct assessments on a population-wide basis, excluding few if any participants due to failure to acquire necessary baseline performances. Methodological investigations summarized here indicate that one can obtain reliable same/different judgments with a variety of stimuli in virtually anyone for whom a basal score on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test can be obtained. This approach includes j

Fear-relevant illusory correlations: what types of associations promote judgmental bias?

A. J. Tomarken, S. Mineka, and M. Cook (1989) found that high-fear individuals markedly overestimated the covariation between fear-relevant stimuli and aversive outcomes. The authors assessed what features of stimulus-outcome associations promote illusory correlations. In Experiment 1, participants with high snake fear exhibited significant covariation bias for slides of snakes and shocks, but not for slides of damaged electric outlets (DEOs) and shocks. In Experiment 2, individuals with high and low snake fear rated DEOs and shocks as belonging together better than snakes and shocks. However,

Interobserver and intraobserver agreement of clinical orthodontic judgments based on intraoral and extraoral photographs.

The purpose of this study was to calculate the agreement between and within observers for orthodontic judgments based on intraoral and extraoral photographs at two separate occasions in ten twin pairs. Eighteen variables were scored by two orthodontic students according to well-defined rating scales. Interobserver and intraobserver proportion of agreement as well as the agreement which could be expected only by chance and the remaining agreement beyond chance were calculated. The calculated agreement beyond chance was not significant (alpha = 0.05%) for middle and upper facial height, anterior

A plea for judgment in management of thoracolumbar fractures and fracture-dislocations. A reassessment of surgical indications.

Until basic knowledge of fracture anatomy and stability includes experiments with comminuted anterior column injuries, posterior column injuries, and these injuries in combination with ligament and capsular injuries, and until the long-term implications of the long fusion in an otherwise healthy patient are fully known, clinicians making decisions about individual patients must assemble all the variables that bear on the patient's ability to heal and become fully functional again before making a decision about surgical stabilization of the thoracolumbar fracture. An assessment of plain roentge
