Prevalence of ear disease in dogs undergoing multidetector thin-slice computed tomography of the head.

Previous reports describing the prevalence of ear diseases in dogs have primarily been based on dogs presenting with clinical signs of disease. The prevalence of subclinical ear disease remains unknown. The purpose of this cross-sectional retrospective study was to describe the prevalence of lesions consistent with middle and external ear disease in dogs presented for multidetector computed tomography (CT) of the head and/or cranial cervical spine at our hospital during the period of July 2011 and August 2013. For each included dog, data recorded were signalment, CT findings, diagnosis, and tr

Comparison of lower extremity atherosclerosis in diabetic and non-diabetic patients using multidetector computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity atherosclerosis (LEA) is among the most serious diabetic complications and leads to non-traumatic amputations. The recently developed dual-source CT (DSCT) and 320- multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) may help to detect plaques more precisely. The aim of our study was to evaluate the differences in LEA between diabetic and non-diabetic patients using MDCT angiography. METHODS: DSCT and 320-MDCT angiographies of the lower extremities were performed in 161 patients (60 diabetic and 101 non-diabetic). The plaque type, distribution, shape and obstructive natures w

Blunt cerebrovascular injury screening with 64-channel multidetector computed tomography: more slices finally cut it.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive screening to diagnose blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) results in early treatment, leading to improved outcomes and reduced stroke rates. While computed tomographic angiography (CTA) has been widely adopted for BCVI screening, evidence of its diagnostic sensitivity is marginal. Previous work from our institution using 32-channel multidetector CTA in 684 patients demonstrated an inadequate sensitivity of 51% (Ann Surg. 2011,253: 444-450). Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) continues to be the reference standard of diagnosis but has significant drawbacks of invasiven

Prognostic value of dual-source multidetector computed tomography coronary angiography in patients with stent implantation.

We aim to evaluate the prognostic value of dual-source 64-slice multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in patients with coronary stents. The study included 173 patients [mean age 59.9 ± 10.1 years, 76.7 % male] with previous stent implantation who underwent MDCT for evaluation of CAD and stent patency. Coronary imaging was performed via dual-source MDCT scanner. Stented vessel segment was evaluated as patent without neointimal hyperplasia (NIH), nonobstructive NIH (<50 % luminal narrowing), or obstructive NIH (>50 % luminal narrowing). Patients were evaluated for major cardiovascular events

Correlation between Aortic Wall Thickness and Coronary Artery Disease by 64 Slice Multidetector Computed Tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a dispersed pathology involving the coronary arteries, carotid arteries, aorta and peripheral arteries. It has been previously suggested that coronary and aortic atherosclerosis may be associated. Imaging of the aorta and the aortic wall can be performed by various imaging modalities including state-of-the-art multidetector computer tomography (MDCT). This study aimed to investigate a possible association between the MDCT-measured thickness of the thoracic aorta and the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) as well as its severity. M

Single coronary artery anomaly: classification and evaluation using multidetector computed tomography and magnetic resonance angiography.

The aim of this study was to use multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and magnetic resonance (MRA) angiography to illustrate the classification and clinical characteristics of single coronary artery anomaly (SCAA). Retrospective evaluation of 22 adult and pediatric patients with SCAA by way of a medical archiving system was performed between June 2001 and August 2012. Imaging modalities used for coronary artery evaluation included MRA and MDCT angiography. Of the 22 patients, the majority (n = 8; 36%) showed an interarterial course, the subtype having the worst prognosis. The retroaortic c

Assessment of the cerebellar arteries with multidetector computed tomography angiography benefits from submillimeter slice thickness.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of 64-row-multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) with different slice thickness (0.625 vs. 1.25 mm) in assessing the cerebellar arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 21 consecutive patients who underwent computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the cervicocranial arteries (64-row MDCT; slice thickness, 0.625 mm) because of suspicion of cerebral ischemia were enrolled retrospectively. The MDCT data set was secondarily reconstructed to a slice thickness of 1.25 mm. The examinations were reviewed by three independent blinded observers. Recorded parameter

Idiopathic pulmonary vein thrombosis complicated with old myocardial infarction detected by multidetector row computed tomography.

Pulmonary vein thrombosis is rarely detected in patients with cancer, lung lobectomy, trauma and so on. We report the case of idiopathic pulmonary vein thrombosis complicated with coronary heart disease. A-57-year-old man with suspected coronary heart disease underwent computed tomography coronary angiography. He did not show any sign of malignancy in lung or other organs. Multi-detector row computed tomography demonstrated 3-dimensional images for the thrombi in bilateral lower pulmonary veins besides an old anterior myocardial infarction. Previously, few reports have described the detection

Incidence of pulmonary embolism and other chest findings in younger patients using multidetector computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) has become the first-line modality for imaging patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE). The disadvantages of MDCT, the use of ionizing radiation and iodinated contrast agents, are a reasonable cause of concern, especially in young patients, and therefore it is critical to understand the likelihood of PE in these patients to evaluate a risk benefit analysis. PURPOSE: To calculate the incidence of PE and other chest findings on MDCT in a young adult population investigated for PE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 387 consecutive patients (age 3

Polysplenia/heterotaxy syndrome associated with aortic coarctation and multiple venous anomalies: multidetector computed tomography findings.

Polysplenia/heterotaxy syndrome is a rare condition involving multiple gastrointestinal, vascular, and cardiac malformations. We present a previously unreported association of aortic coarctation, double superior vena cava, a left-hand side inferior vena cava with hemiazygos vein continuation and a right retroaortic renal vein with polysplenia/heterotaxy syndrome. Multidetector computed tomography with multiplanar reconstruction images were useful in the detection of these abnormalities.

Radiation dose reduction in hepatic multidetector computed tomography with a novel adaptive noise reduction filter.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to optimize a novel adaptive noise reduction filter based on patient body weight and to investigate its utility for improving the image quality of low-dose hepatic computed tomography (CT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The tube current-time product was changed from 140 to 180 and from 60 to 100 mAs at standard- and low-dose CT, respectively, based on the body weights of 45 patients. Unenhanced and two-phase contrast-enhanced helical scans were obtained at the standard dose during the hepatic arterial and equilibrium phases. During the equilibrium phase, we o

Preoperative evaluation of the aberrant artery in intralobar pulmonary sequestration using multidetector computed tomography angiography.

Intralobar pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital malformation of the lung, and identification of the aberrant artery from the systemic circulation to the sequestered lung is crucial in definitive surgery. Nowadays, various noninvasive imaging modalities such as helical computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and color Doppler sonography have been developed. Among them, multidetector computed tomography angiography, which allows simultaneous imaging of the aberrant artery and venous drainage, has the potential to become the first-line examination in the preoperative assessment o

Common carotid artery pseudoaneurysm after neck dissection: colour Doppler ultrasound and multidetector computed tomography findings.

Common carotid artery pseudoaneurysm is a rare disease, which has been previously unreported in association with neck dissection. We describe the Doppler ultrasound and multidetector computed tomography (CT) findings of a case of carotid pseudoaneurysm, one month after pharyngolaryngectomy with bilateral neck dissection. Multidetector CT confirmed the diagnosis made on the basis of Doppler ultrasound; the high image quality of axial and three-dimensional reconstructions avoided the need for pre-operative conventional angiography. In the presence of a pulsatile cervical mass after neck surgery,
