Evaluating the Performance of ChatGPT and DeepSeek in Bilingual Responses to Questions Regarding Craniofacial Microsomia.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is the second most common congenital craniofacial anomaly. As patients increasingly seek health information online, large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and DeepSeek have emerged as potential sources of medical information. This study evaluates the performance of ChatGPT-5 and DeepSeek-V3.2 in providing bilingual responses to CFM-related questions. METHODS: Twenty-two questions covering CFM definition, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis were developed. Each question was submitted in English and Chinese to both LLMs using a zero-prompt

Transcoding number words to typed multi-digit numerals: revisiting the strange case in Arabic bilinguals.

Language-specific effects are observed in the performance of numerical tasks. We evaluated the effect of the number word system (non-inverted; decade-unit format HDU vs inverted; unit-decade format HUD) in multi-digit numbers on transcoding performance among Arabic-Hebrew bilingual university students. Both languages are written right-to-left, but only in Arabic the sequence of number words is inverted, with units stipulated before decades (e.g. 'four-and-twenty'). Previously we (Hayek et al., Writing Systems Research 11:188-202, 2019) addressed the effect of the number word system on transcod

Development of derivational morphological knowledge in monolingual and bilingual children: Effects of modality and lexicality.

This study mapped the trajectory of developing derivational morphological knowledge in Hebrew monolingual and Russian-Hebrew bilingual children. We investigated 2nd and 4th graders, using a two-by-two structure along the dimensions of modality (comprehension, production) and type of word (real-word, pseudo-word). Performance in the morphological analogies comprehension tasks improved with grade, and monolingual and bilingual children performed equally well. A different pattern was evident in production tasks. In real-word production, monolingual children were more accurate than bilingual child

Foreign Language Learners' Uncertainty Experiences and Uncertainty Management.

Uncertainty is unavoidable in life; it is also an indispensable characteristic of educational settings. The process of learning a foreign language naturally involves interaction and coconstruction of knowledge. During this process, students may encounter uncertainty from a variety of sources, including the course, context, friends, or the teacher. Besides, to communicate meaningfully, the mutual effort of both the listener and the speaker is needed to deal with uncertainty. Considering this, the present study makes an effort to comprehend how learners appreciate and manage uncertainty in langu

The MINT Sprint 2.0: A picture naming test for detection of naming impairments in Alzheimer's disease and in preclinical AD.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on the onset of naming deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is mixed. Some studies showed an early decline, but others did not. The present study introduces evidence from a novel naming test. METHODS: Cognitively normal (n = 138), mild cognitive impairment (MCI; n = 21), and Alzheimer's disease (AD; n = 31) groups completed an expanded Multilingual Naming Test with a time-pressured administration procedure (MINT Sprint 2.0). Cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers classified participants as true controls (n = 61) or preclinical AD (n = 26). RESULTS: Total correct MINT Sprint 2.

Autism and bilingualism: A thematic analysis of practitioner perspectives in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: At least 25% of autistic children worldwide have the potential to grow up in a bilingual environment. However, many autistic children are being denied opportunities to access additional languages and the cultural, familial and community connections that come with this. There is little evidence identifying the barriers to language learning and access, and no research addressing the perspectives of speech and language therapists (SLTs), who are crucial in supporting parents to make informed choices about bilingualism with their child. AIMS: The aim of this research was to understand

A New Stepping-Stone on the Path to Mathematics Success for DHH Learners.

Coeditors of a special issue of the American Annals of the Deaf on mathematics instruction in deaf education, the authors provide a context for the five featured articles. First, the authors establish the importance of mathematics. They then give a historical account of previously related "stepping-stones." Beginning at 1990, the authors follow key events in the field that have led to the special issue. They summarize each article, highlighting three common themes: deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) persons as distinct and capable mathematics learners, the significance of conceptual understanding

Beyond Alzheimer's disease: Can bilingualism be a more generalized protective factor in neurodegeneration?

Bilingualism has been argued to have an impact on cognition and brain structure. Effects have been reported across the lifespan: from healthy children to ageing adults, including clinical (ageing) populations. It has been argued that active bilingualism may significantly contribute to the delaying of the expression of Alzheimer's disease symptoms. If bilingualism plays an ameliorative role against the expression of neurodegeneration in dementia, it is possible that it could have similar effects for other neurodegenerative disorders, including Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's and Huntington's Di

Characteristics of Chinese-English bilingual dyslexia in right occipito-temporal lesion.

Current literature suggests that right hemisphere lesions produce predominant spatial-related dyslexic error in English speakers. However, little is known regarding such lesions in Chinese speakers. In this paper, we describe the dyslexic characteristics of a Chinese-English bilingual patient with a right posterior cortical lesion. He was found to have profound spatial-related errors during his English word reading, in both real and non-words. During Chinese word reading, there was significantly less error compared to English, probably due to the ideographic nature of the Chinese language. He

Dissociation of reading strategies: letter-by-letter reading in the native language and normal reading in the learned language. A case study.

In letter-by-letter reading, which is typically observed in Dejerine's (1892) "pure alexia," oral reading seems to be mediated by the naming of the constituent letters of the printed sequence: reading time rises abnormally as a function of the number of letters of the target item. We describe a patient with fluent aphasia who showed the unusual pattern of letter-by-letter reading together with surface dyslexia in her native language (French) and apparently normal reading in the second, learned language (English). Thus, letter-by-letter reading should be considered as a description of a symptom

Belonging in Uncertain Times: An Ecological Perspective on the Identification of LOTE Majors.

This study investigates how Languages Other Than English (LOTE) students negotiate their identification amid growing uncertainties about the value of multilingual learning and language degrees. Drawing on ecological systems theory (EST), it identifies eight influencing factors ranging from microsystem to macrosystem that shape students' identification. These factors are organised across three interconnected spheres: the individual sphere, shaped by personal interest and symbolic resonance with language and culture; the social sphere, driven by socially valued expectations in academic and caree

The treatment of anomia in Sesotho: a case for parametric aphasiology.

South Africa, as a multilingual country, offers the opportunity for examining the interaction between aphasic symptomatology and the parameters of language. Effective intervention techniques depend on an understanding of clinical linguistics. This article describes an intervention study with two Sesotho-speaking individuals with anomia. Sesotho as a noun class and syllable-timed language offers the opportunity to study the influence of cueing techniques, which are based on such linguistic parameters. Word lists were designed using non-aphasic participants and three cueing techniques for anomia

Detecting FIMI: A methodological framework for testing OSINT tools in TTPs detection.

BACKGROUND: Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) represents a growing hybrid threat targeting democratic processes, social cohesion, and diaspora communities. Detecting it requires identifying underlying tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) described in frameworks such as DISARM, AMITT, and MITRE ATT&CK. Although many open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools exist, their evaluation remains fragmented and lacks methodological standardisation. This article presents a framework for testing OSINT tools for TTP detection, developed within the Horizon Europe project RESONANT.

Views and reported practices of South African speech-language therapy and audiology undergraduate students on linguistic and cultural integration in training.

BACKGROUND: South Africa's speech-language therapy (SLT) and audiology professions face challenges in achieving linguistic and cultural integration (i.e., the meaningful incorporation of diverse linguistic and cultural perspectives into training and practice), a critical aspect for effectively serving the country's diverse population. Limited curriculum content on indigenous languages and cultural competence, along with low diversity of academic and clinical training staff (staff), may hinder students' preparedness for multilingual and multicultural clinical practice. This study explored under

Towards Clinical NLP in a Low-Resource Language: Structuring Estonian Clinical Text.

Healthcare sectors generate large volumes of unstructured text, yet mature clinical NLP is lacking for low-resource languages. This project targets Estonian, a morphologically rich, low-resource language, and outlines an end-to-end pipeline that converts free text into interoperable, structured data. A design-science approach guides development of multilingual speech-to-text for clinical dictation, clinical NLP for entity extraction and context handling, terminology binding to the Estonian SNOMED CT extension, and export as HL7 FHIR resources with mappings to EHR fields. Expected benefits incl

The shelved pipeline: AI can find strategically abandoned medicines and bring them to patients.

A lot of capital is pouring into artificial intelligence (AI) that designs new molecules, while a parallel supply of de-risked, clinical-stage drugs is overlooked. Strategic and business decisions, in the absence of scientific failure, account for a substantial and rising share of late-stage terminations. This review distinguishes strategic recovery, advancing clinical-stage assets shelved without scientific failure, from repurposing and rescue. Meanwhile, a historic patent cliff is pressing companies to refill pipelines faster than novel discovery allows. Recovering these drugs is commerciall

Bilingual aphasia and language control: a follow-up fMRI and intrinsic connectivity study.

In a world that is becoming more multilingual, bilingual aphasia is a clinical problem with a major clinical impact. However, at present we lack causal explanations of the many features of recovery patterns and there is no consensus about the language in which the patient should receive speech therapy. Further advance requires an understanding of the dynamics of recovery. In a novel longitudinal, single-case study, we combine fMRI and dynamic causal modeling to examine the effects of specific language treatment for picture naming on the representation and control of language areas during the c

Multimodal medical diagnosis: a mini review of LLM-vision fusion models in low-resource healthcare settings.

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) and vision transformers have enabled multimodal systems that integrate clinical text with medical imaging for diagnostic decision-making. While these systems show promising results on benchmark datasets in well-resourced research settings, their applicability in low-resource healthcare environments where diagnostic disparities are most severe remains limited and poorly understood. This mini review synthesizes key developments in LLM-vision fusion architectures from 2018 to 2026, with a focus on radiology-oriented visual question answering (VQA) a
