An avoidant restrictive food intake disorder in a 7-year-old male came with nutritional deficiencies: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a recently recognized feeding and eating disorder characterized by restricted or avoidance of food intake due to the sensory characteristics of the food or fear of the unpleasant consequences of eating without concerns about body image. It commonly presents in childhood and can lead to serious nutritional and developmental outcomes. While reports from high-income countries are increasing, data from low-resource settings remain scarce. In such settings, malnutrition is often attributed to food insecurity or infection, making ARFID

Pro-Inflammatory Profile of Adipokines in Obesity Contributes to Pathogenesis, Nutritional Disorders, and Cardiovascular Risk in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Obesity is a disease which leads to the development of many other disorders. Excessive accumulation of lipids in adipose tissue (AT) leads to metabolic changes, including hypertrophy of adipocytes, macrophage migration, changes in the composition of immune cells, and impaired secretion of adipokines. Adipokines are cytokines produced by AT and greatly influence human health. Obesity and the pro-inflammatory profile of adipokines lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through different mechanisms. In obesity and adipokine profile, there are gender differences that characterize

Inflammatory Signatures of Maternal Obesity as Risk Factors for Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Role of Maternal Microbiota and Nutritional Intervention Strategies.

Obesity is a main risk factor for the onset and the precipitation of many non-communicable diseases. This condition, which is associated with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, is of main concern during pregnancy leading to very serious consequences for the new generations. In addition to the prominent role played by the adipose tissue, dysbiosis of the maternal gut may also sustain the obesity-related inflammatory milieu contributing to create an overall suboptimal intrauterine environment. Such a condition here generically defined as "inflamed womb" may hold long-term detrimental effec

Characteristics and outcomes of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in Japanese elementary-school students on total parenteral nutrition.

The clinical outcomes of adolescents with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) remain unclear. Furthermore, no report has compared the characteristics of ARFID and restricting-type anorexia nervosa (R-AN) in elementary-school students on total parenteral nutrition (TPN). This study retrospectively reviewed inpatients diagnosed with ARFID or R-AN between 2005 and 2019. Patients with ARFID (two boys and seven girls) and R-AN (13 girls) were hospitalized because of rapid physical deterioration, and nutrition therapy was continued without withdrawal. The ARFID group exhibited signific

Redox regulation of heat shock protein expression in aging and neurodegenerative disorders associated with oxidative stress: a nutritional approach.

Oxidative stress has been implicated in mechanisms leading to neuronal cell injury in various pathological states of the brain. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disorder with cognitive and memory decline, speech loss, personality changes and synapse loss. Many approaches have been undertaken to understand AD, but the heterogeneity of the etiologic factors makes it difficult to define the clinically most important factor determining the onset and progression of the disease. However, increasing evidence indicates that factors such as oxidative stress and disturbed protein metabolism and

Associations of depressive and anxiety disorders with periodontal disease prevalence in young adults: analysis of 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety have been linked to periodontal disease, an emerging risk factor for chronic diseases. However, this literature is mixed, and few studies have concurrently evaluated depression and anxiety. PURPOSE: We simultaneously examined the associations of depressive and anxiety disorders with periodontal disease prevalence and explored tobacco use as a mediator. METHODS: Participants were 1,979 young adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004 who underwent a diagnostic interview and a dental examination. RESULTS: Adults with panic dis

Endoscopy and noninvasive tests in pediatric disorders of gut-brain interaction: A multicenter retrospective study of the Italian Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition.

OBJECTIVES: Disorders of gut-brain interactions (DGBIs) are highly prevalent in pediatric gastroenterology and often lead to the use of invasive and noninvasive diagnostic tests, despite the guidance provided by the Rome IV criteria. Rome IV promotes a positive diagnostic approach based on the identification of specific symptoms occurring at defined frequencies, unexplained after thorough medical evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and diagnostic accuracy of these tests in pediatric DGBIs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of pediatric patients (aged 2-16 years

Pharmacokinetic effects of a single dose nutritional ketone ester supplement on brain glucose and ketone metabolism in alcohol use disorder.

Acute alcohol use reduces brain glucose metabolism while increasing uptake of acetate, a byproduct of alcohol. This metabolic shift persists in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) and may offer a treatment target. Recent studies show that ketone therapies can lessen alcohol withdrawal and cravings. In this study, we tested whether a single dose of a ketone ester (KE) supplement affects brain energy use and alcohol craving. Ten participants (five with AUD, five healthy controls) received two FDG-PET brain scans-one after taking 395 mg/kg KE and one at baseline-in a randomized order. Add

Prevalence and outcomes of co-occurring psychiatric and endocrine, metabolic, and nutritional disorders: An atlas based on umbrella review of 254,154,533 records.

Psychiatric disorders frequently co-occur with endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic disorders, complicating diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. To date, no umbrella review (UR) has summarized the corresponding evidence. We conducted a UR of meta-analyses of observational studies reporting the prevalence and outcomes of comorbid endocrine, nutritional, metabolic, and psychiatric disorders (DSM/ICD criteria, PubMed/Medline/Scopus/Embase/Web of Science, 13/10/2025). Meta-analytic prevalence and association estimates were recalculated/and graded using quantitative criteria. The methodological qu
