Person-, Job-, and Environment-Related Factors Associated with Long-Term Job Retention of People with Physical Disabilities.

PURPOSE: Employment provides people with physical disabilities (PWPD) financial independence, enhances their well-being, self-worth, and facilitates a sense of purpose. However, the unemployment rate for PWPD is significantly higher than for individuals without a disability. There is limited knowledge regarding what factors help people with disabilities retain employment beyond the standard 90-day job probationary period. Thus, we investigated person-, job-, and environment-related factors that contribute to long-term job retention for four years or more among PWPD. METHODS: We recruited a na

Understanding the Wellbeing Effects of a Community Music Program for People With Disabilities: A Mixed Methods, Person-Centered Study.

People with disabilities face inequalities in mental wellbeing, for which social exclusion is a contributing factor. Musical activities offer a promising but complex intervention, making impacts on a population with highly varied characteristics and needs challenging to capture. This paper reports on a mixed methods, person-centered study investigating a community music intervention for such a population. Three groups of adult service users with varied disabilities (either physical, learning, or both), took part in weekly music workshops in different locations. Music staff, housing and resourc

Assuming ability of youth with autism: Synthesis of methods capturing the first-person perspectives of children and youth with disabilities.

Most research regarding youth with autism spectrum disorder has not focused on their first-person perspectives providing limited insight into methodologies best suited to eliciting their voices. We conducted a synthesis of methods previously used to obtain the first-person perspectives of youth with various disabilities, which may be applicable to youth with autism spectrum disorder. Two-hundred and eighty-four articles met the inclusion criteria of our scoping review. We identified six distinct primary methods (questionnaires, interviews, group discussion, narratives, diaries, and art) expres

Dimensions Underlying Measures of Disability, Personal Factors, and Health Status in Cervical Radiculopathy: A Cross-Sectional Study.

This cross-sectional study sought to identify dimensions underlying measures of impairment, disability, personal factors, and health status in patients with cervical radiculopathy. One hundred twenty-four patients with magnetic resonance imaging-verified cervical radiculopathy, attending a neurosurgery clinic in Sweden, participated. Data from clinical tests and questionnaires on disability, personal factors, and health status were used in a principal-component analysis (PCA) with oblique rotation. The PCA supported a 3-component model including 14 variables from clinical tests and questionnai

Use of stance time variability for predicting mobility disability in community-dwelling older persons: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Mobility disability is a serious and frequent adverse health outcome associated with aging. Early identification of individuals at risk for mobility disability is important if interventions to prevent disability are to be instituted. The objectives of this prospective study were to (1) determine the magnitude of stance time variability (STV) that discriminates individuals who currently have mobility disability (prevalent mobility disability) and (2) determine the magnitude of STV that predicts a new onset of mobility disability at 1 year (incident mobility disability).

Potential Association of the CSMD1 Gene with Moderate Intellectual Disability, Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Traits.

CSMD1 is a gene involved in various biological processes and is highly expressed in the central nervous system, where it plays a key role in complement activity, brain circuit development, and cognitive function. It has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for schizophrenia and a causative factor in developmental epileptic encephalopathy, neurodevelopmental disorders, and intellectual disability. However, no MIM phenotype number has been assigned to CSMD1 for a specific disorder. Here, we report an individual presenting with moderate intellectual disability, anxiety disorder, obsessive-com

Improving Ambulation and Minimizing Disability with Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in a Stiff-person Syndrome Patient with Recurrent Falls.

Stiff-person syndrome (SPS) is a rare, autoimmune, neuromuscular disorder that manifests with axial and proximal muscle stiffness, rigidity, and painful muscle spasms, often causing progressive disability due to limited movement. First-line therapies comprise symptomatic management with γ-aminobutyric acid-modulating drugs such as benzodiazepines and baclofen. Patients resistant to these treatments are often given intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg). Severe disease refractory to first-line therapy and IVIg may be treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) or immunomodulatory agents such as r

The impact of visual impairment on the ability to perform activities of daily living for persons with severe/profound intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: The ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) as a component of participation is one of the factors that contribute to quality of life. The ability to perform ADL for persons experiencing severe/profound intellectual disability (ID) may be reduced due to their cognitive and physical capacities. However, until recently, the impact of the significantly prevalent visual impairments on the performance of activities of daily living has not yet been revealed within this group. AIM: The purpose of this prospective cross-sectional study was to investigate the impact of visual im

Well-Being in First Person: A Relational Construction of Psychological Well-Being Among Young People With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Psychological well-being (PWB) has become a central construct in contemporary psychology; however, young people with intellectual disabilities (ID) remain largely underrepresented in well-being research. Much of the available evidence relies on proxy reports from caregivers or professionals, limiting understanding of how young people with ID themselves conceptualize and experience well-being. This qualitative study explores the meaning of psychological well-being from a first-person perspective among young people with mild intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Thirteen participants (

A 50-year personal odyssey through the story of learning disabilities: from primary school to adult LD diagnoses.

The problems with LD diagnosis are the logical consequence of a concept that, after 63 years, has never had a universally accepted definition or empirically validated diagnostic criteria. This essay is a personal odyssey over 50 years that explores the many problems with the LD concept and LD diagnosis that have affected my research, teaching, and clinical practice with children and adults. It is a critical, historical, and analytic journey about the LD story grounded in first-person clinical experience and explicit engagement with diagnostic theory that has implications for first-time adult L

Artificial Intelligence-based fine-tuning model for fall activity recognition in disabled persons within an IoT environment.

Remote monitoring of fall actions or conditions and the everyday lifecycle of disabled losses is the vital drive of current telemedicine. The Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) models, which incorporate deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) techniques, are increasingly applied in healthcare to automate the detection of abnormal and unhealthy conditions. Fall detection (FD) in elderly patients and human action recognition for surveillance are crucial for safety, but achieving high accuracy remains challenging due to complex human movements. Detecting falls is cruci
