Medicinal and Therapeutic Potential of Herbs and Plant Metabolites / Extracts Countering Viral Pathogens - Current Knowledge and Future Prospects.

BACKGROUND: Recently, there has been a remarkable progress in the field of antiviral herbal therapy owing to increasing concerns about the development of drug resistance and limited advances in the field of antiviral drug discovery. In almost all countries, medicinal plants have been used widely throughout history for the treatment of diseases and infections as traditional healing remedies due to their broad therapeutic spectrum and minimal or no side effects. As synthetic antiviral drugs are not available against most of the viral agents, hence all possible efforts have been focused on the se

Larvicidal activity of selected plant extracts and their combination against the mosquito vectors Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes aegypti.

In order to develop an environment-friendly botanical mosquito larvicide alternative to the chemical larvicides, extracts were made from the leaves of Hyptis suaveolens, Lantana camara, Nerium oleander, and Tecoma stans with three organic solvents such as methanol (ME), chloroform (CH), and petroleum ether (PE) using a Soxhlet extractor. The plant extracts were screened for larvicidal activity individually and in combination against the larvae of Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus as per WHO protocol. Among the extracts, the maximum larvicidal activity was shown by the PE extract of L. c

Repellent, irritant and toxic effects of 20 plant extracts on adults of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae mosquito.

Pyrethroid insecticides induce an excito-repellent effect that reduces contact between humans and mosquitoes. Insecticide use is expected to lower the risk of pathogen transmission, particularly when impregnated on long-lasting treated bednets. When applied at low doses, pyrethroids have a toxic effect, however the development of pyrethroid resistance in several mosquito species may jeopardize these beneficial effects. The need to find additional compounds, either to kill disease-carrying mosquitoes or to prevent mosquito contact with humans, therefore arises. In laboratory conditions, the eff

Evaluation of antiviral activity of South American plant extracts against herpes simplex virus type 1 and rabies virus.

This paper describes the screening of different South American plant extracts and fractions. Aqueous and organic extracts were prepared and tested for antiherpetic (HSV-1, KOS and 29R strains) and antirabies (PV strain) activities. The evaluation of the potential antiviral activity of these extracts was performed by using an MTT assay for HSV-1, and by a viral cytopathic effect (CPE) inhibitory method for rabies virus (RV). The results were expressed as 50% cytotoxicity (CC(50)) for MTT assay and 50% effective (EC(50)) concentrations for CPE, and with them it was possible to calculate the sele

Nanoparticles in plant extracts: influence of drugs on the formation of nanoparticles and precipitates in black tea infusions.

The influence of the neuroleptics fluphenazine and promethazine on the formation of nanoparticles in aqueous tea infusions was investigated using photon correlation spectroscopy. Formation of nanoparticles and of precipitates was observed in decaffeinated tea and caffeine-containing tea. The amount of drug in the nanoparticle fraction was determined at different starting concentrations using high-performance liquid chromatography. In the case of fluphenazine, between 8 and 30% are assigned to the nanoparticles fraction, in the case of promethazine between 30 and 56%. The concentration of free

Aliquat IL336 vs. Cyphos IL101 extractants for the solvent extraction of heavy metals from zinc plants residues.

Hydrometallurgical zinc production generates residues containing valuable but environmentally hazardous metals like cadmium, zinc, cobalt and nickel. This study compares two ionic liquid extractants, Aliquat IL336 and Cyphos IL101, for the recovery of cadmium, zinc, cobalt and nickel from chloride solutions. Dichloromethane was used as the diluent. The metals are extracted via an anion-exchange mechanism as ion-pairs of the form [R⁺]2[MCl2]2- (M = Cd or Zn), where R⁺ is the cation of the ionic liquid extractant. Both extractants showed high selectivity and efficiency for Cd(II) and Zn(II) over

A systematic literature review of the efficacy of acaricidal plants, plant extracts, and tick assays used against dog-associated ticks.

Dogs are an integral part of many households and important companion animals to humans. Their inquisitive and exploratory behaviour leads them to roam natural environments, making them susceptible to tick infestations that can also be transmitted to humans. To control these ticks, various plant extracts have been evaluated for their efficacy as acaricides and/or repellents against various species. This study was aimed at consolidating the data that has been published in terms of the plant species that have shown efficacy against ticks that parasitize dogs, it further evaluated the methods used

Biosensor-guided detection of outer membrane-specific antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa from fungal cultures and medicinal plant extracts.

New approaches are needed to discover novel antimicrobials, particularly antibiotics that target the Gram-negative outer membrane. By exploiting bacterial sensing and responses to outer membrane (OM) damage, we used a biosensor approach consisting of polymyxin resistance gene transcriptional reporters to screen natural products and a small drug library for biosensor activity that indicates damage to the OM. The diverse antimicrobial compounds that cause induction of the polymyxin resistance genes, which correlates with outer membrane damage, suggest that these LPS and surface modifications als

Plant crude extracts containing oligomeric hemagglutinins protect chickens against highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus after one dose of immunization.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (HPAIV) have been responsible for causing several severe outbreaks across the world. To protect poultry farms and to prevent the possible spread of new influenza pandemics, vaccines that are both efficacious and low-cost are in high demand. We produced stable, large hemagglutinin H5 oligomers in planta by the specific interaction between S•Tag and S•Protein. H5 oligomers combined via S•Tag::S•Protein interaction in plant crude extracts induced strong humoral immune responses, strong neutralizing antibody responses, and resistance in chickens after chal

Technical data on the inhibition properties of some medicinal plant extracts towards caseinolytic protease proteolytic subunit of Plasmodium knowlesi.

Proteolytic subunit of the caseinolytic protease system of Plasmodium knowlesi (Pk-ClpP; EC 3.4.21.92) is considered a viable target for antimalarial drug development to eradicate P. knowlesi malaria infection in Malaysia and Southeast Asian region. Inhibition of this system leads to a disruption in the protein homeostasis molecular machinery and therefore be lethal for the parasite. While plants are considered excellent sources of bioactive compounds exhibiting inhibition activity towards Pk-ClpP, many local medicinal plants remain unexplored. This article expands the data collected from the
