Wad Medani virus (WMV) belongs to the genus Orbivirus and is a poorly studied arbovirus with unclear medical significance. Presently, a limited number of WMV strains are characterized and available in NCBI GenBank, some isolated many years ago. A new WMV strain was isolated in 2012 from Dermacentor nuttalli ticks collected from sheep in the Tuva Republic, Russia, and sequenced using high-throughput methods. In October of 2006, dying Salsola tragus L. (Russian thistle, tumbleweed), family Chenopodiaceae, plants were found along the Azov Sea at Chushka, Russia. Approximately 40 plants in the area were diseased and almost 80% of these were dying. Plants were approximately 1 m tall × 0.5 m wide. Complete or almost complete hepatitis B virus (HBV) genomes were sequenced for 13 genotype A and 42 genotype D strains from the former USSR. The strains were classifiable within subgenotypes A2, D1, D2 and D3. Comparison of the deduced gene products for the four ORFs of 89 genotype D strains revealed 27 subgenotype-specific residues, and a region spanning residues 58-128 in the spacer region of the P gene could be used to distinguish between D1 and D4. PURPOSE: To study different socioeconomic determinants of mortality in posttransition Russia and propose potential explanations. Previous research has demonstrated a widening educational mortality gradient, widespread deprivation, and harmful health behaviors.
METHODS: Data were from seven rounds (1994-2002) of the 38-center Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey. We measured associations among education, income, consumer goods, smoking, alcohol consumption, and subsequent death (reported by another household member), using univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis.

From November 2003 to March 2004 a total of 100 fecal specimens from infants and children with acute gastroenteritis in the city of Birobidzhan, Eastern Russia were tested for the presence of diarrheal viruses by RT-multiplex PCR. Of these, 74 fecal specimens were positive for diarrheal viruses and this represented 74%. Among the diarrheal viruses detected, group A rotavirus was the most prevalent (67%; 67 of 100), followed by norovirus (4%; 4 of 100), group C rotavirus (1%, 1 of 100), sapovirus (1%; 1 of 100), and hepatitis A virus (1%; 1 of 100). PURPOSE: To report our results using PRK combined with PTK to treat keratoconus.
METHODS: Forty-one patients (70 eyes) underwent PRK+PTK with a Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser. PRK included spherical or cylindrical ablations, or both. PRK ablation zone diameter was 6.00 mm. Bedaquiline is a cornerstone drug for treating drug-resistant tuberculosis. We analyzed 11 isolates from 9 patients who were treated with a bedaquiline-based regimen and remained culture-positive long after treatment start. In 4 of 8 resistant isolates, we found substitutions in AtpE, which encodes subunit c of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis ATP synthase and is rarely identified in clinical isolates.
