Design and evaluation of Ear-ECG system.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most widely used physiological signal for clinical diagnosis. It has found itself integrated in the space of wearables with capabilities to detect cardiac abnormalities. An emerging field of wearables is the concept of earables, which has gained significant traction in recent years as the ear proves capable of capturing diverse physiological signals. In this study, we design a system and validate the capture of ECG from the ear at various locations using different configurations. We further assess its usefulness in analyzing heart rate variability (HRV). W

Intelligent Electrocardiogram Acquisition Via Ubiquitous Photoplethysmography Monitoring.

Recent advances in machine learning, particularly deep neural network architectures, have shown substantial promise in classifying and predicting cardiac abnormalities from electrocardiogram (ECG) data. Such data are rich in information content, typically in morphology and timing, due to the close correlation between cardiac function and the ECG. However, the ECG is usually not measured ubiquitously in a passive manner from consumer devices, and generally requires 'active' sampling whereby the user prompts a device to take an ECG measurement. Conversely, photoplethysmography (PPG) data are typ

Amplitude spectrum area is dependent on the electrocardiogram magnitude: evaluation of different normalization approaches.

Objective.Amplitude Spectrum Area (AMSA) of the electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform during ventricular fibrillation (VF) has shown promise as a predictor of defibrillation success during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, AMSA relies on the magnitude of the ECG waveform, raising concerns about reproducibility across different settings that may introduce magnitude bias. This study aimed to evaluate different AMSA normalization approaches and their impact on removing bias while preserving predictive value.Approach.ECG were recorded in 118 piglets (1-2 months old) during a model of asphyx

A new approach to phonocardiogram severity analysis.

Phonocardiogram signal (PCG) has been the subject of several signal processing studies, where researchers applied various analysis techniques and extracted numerous features for different purposes, like cardiac pathologies identification, healthy/pathologic case discrimination, and severity assessment. When talking about cardiac severity, many think directly about the intensity or energy of the signal as the most reliable parameter. However, cardiac severity is not always reflected by the intensity or energy of the signal but includes other variables as well. In this paper, we will discuss the

Precordial Vibrations: A Review of Wearable Systems, Signal Processing Techniques, and Main Applications.

Recently, the ever-growing interest in the continuous monitoring of heart function in out-of-laboratory settings for an early diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases has led to the investigation of innovative methods for cardiac monitoring. Among others, wearables recording seismic waves induced on the chest surface by the mechanical activity of the heart are becoming popular. For what concerns wearable-based methods, cardiac vibrations can be recorded from the thorax in the form of acceleration, angular velocity, and/or displacement by means of accelerometers, gyroscopes, and fiber optic sensors

Bioacoustic signal analysis through complex network features.

The paper proposes a graph-theoretical approach to auscultation, bringing out the potential of graph features in classifying the bioacoustics signals. The complex network analysis of the bioacoustics signals - vesicular (VE) and bronchial (BR) breath sound - of 48 healthy persons are carried out for understanding the airflow dynamics during respiration. The VE and BR are classified by the machine learning techniques extracting the graph features - the number of edges (E), graph density (D), transitivity (T), degree centrality (Dcg) and eigenvector centrality (Ecg). The higher value of E, D, an

Unsupervised detection and classification of heartbeats using the dissimilarity matrix in PCG signals.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Auscultation is the first technique applied to the early diagnose of any cardiovascular disease (CVD) in rural areas and poor-resources countries because of its low cost and non-invasiveness. However, it highly depends on the physician's expertise to recognize specific heart sounds heard through the stethoscope. The analysis of phonocardiogram (PCG) signals attempts to segment each cardiac cycle into the four cardiac states (S1, systole, S2 and diastole) in order to develop automatic systems applied to an efficient and reliable detection and classification of heartbea

Tracheal Sound Analysis.

Tracheal sound sensors provide multiple respiratory signals that are valuable for studying upper airway characteristics. This chapter reviews the original work and ongoing research on tracheal sound analysis in relation to upper airway obstruction during sleep. Past and current research suggest that being associated with other sleep study recording sensors and advanced signal processing techniques, tracheal sound analysis can extensively contribute to the diagnosis and assessment of sleep-disordered breathing.

Diagnostics of Articular Cartilage Damage Based on Generated Acoustic Signals Using ANN-Part I: Femoral-Tibial Joint.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, progressive disease which has over 300 million cases each year. Some of the main symptoms of OA are pain, restriction of joint motion and stiffness of the joint. Early diagnosis and treatment can prolong painless joint function. Vibroarthrography (VAG) is a cheap, reproducible, non-invasive and easy-to-use tool which can be implemented in the diagnostic route. The aim of this study was to establish diagnostic accuracy and to identify the most accurate signal processing method for the detection of OA in knee joints. In this study, we have enrolled a total of 67

A Matlab toolbox for analyzing repetitive movements: application in gait and tapping experiments.

Coordination and timing in repetitive movements have been intensively investigated in diverse experimental settings for understanding the underlying basic mechanisms in healthy controls. On this basic research side, there are mainly two theoretical models: the Wing-Kristofferson (WK) model and the Haken-Kelso-Bunz (HKB) model. On the clinical side of the research, several efforts have been spent on quantitatively assessing gait and other repetitive movements such as tapping, especially as an outcome measure of clinical trials in diverse neurological disorders. Nevertheless, Parkinson's disease

Pathological discrimination of the phonocardiogram signal using the bispectral technique.

Phonocardiography is a dynamic non-invasive and relatively low-cost technique used to monitor the state of the mechanical activity of the heart. The recordings generated by such a technique is called phonocardiogram (PCG) signals. When shown visually, PCG signals can provide more insights of heart sounds for medical doctors. Thus, several approaches have been proposed to analyse these sounds through PCG recordings. However, due to the complexity and the high nonlinear nature of these recordings, a computer-assisted technique based on higher-order statistics HOS is shown to be, among these tech

A Combined Independent Source Separation and Quality Index Optimization Method for Fetal ECG Extraction from Abdominal Maternal Leads.

The non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram (fECG) technique has recently received considerable interest in monitoring fetal health. The aim of our paper is to propose a novel fECG algorithm based on the combination of the criteria of independent source separation and of a quality index optimization (ICAQIO-based). The algorithm was compared with two methods applying the two different criteria independently-the ICA-based and the QIO-based methods-which were previously developed by our group. All three methods were tested on the recently implemented Fetal ECG Synthetic Database (FECGSYNDB). Moreov

Heart sounds analysis using probability assessment.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes a method for automated discrimination of heart sounds recordings according to the Physionet Challenge 2016. The goal was to decide if the recording refers to normal or abnormal heart sounds or if it is not possible to decide (i.e. 'unsure' recordings). APPROACH: Heart sounds S1 and S2 are detected using amplitude envelopes in the band 15-90 Hz. The averaged shape of the S1/S2 pair is computed from amplitude envelopes in five different bands (15-90 Hz; 55-150 Hz; 100-250 Hz; 200-450 Hz; 400-800 Hz). A total of 53 features are extracted from the data. The largest

New Prostheses and Orthoses Step Up their Game: Motorized Knees, Robotic Hands, and Exosuits Mark Advances in Rehabilitation Technology.

Forty years ago, Les Baugh lost both of his arms in an electrical accident. With bilateral shoulder-level amputations, his options for prosthetic arms were limited. That changed two years ago, when Baugh underwent a surgical procedure at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore that allowed him to control state-of-the-art robotic arms using nerves that had been rerouted to his chest. Within ten days of training, he was able to control both arms simultaneously and move a cup from a lower shelf to a higher shelf-a task that previously had been impossible-just by thinking about how he wanted to move h

A vision based proposal for classification of normal and abnormal gait using RGB camera.

Human gait is mainly related to the foot and leg movements but, obviously, the entire motor system of the human body is involved. We hypothesise that movement parameters such as dynamic balance, movement harmony of each body element (arms, head, thorax…) could enable us to finely characterise gait singularities to pinpoint potential diseases or abnormalities in advance. Since this paper deals with the preliminary problem pertaining to the classification of normal and abnormal gait, our study will revolve around the lower part of the body. Our proposal presents a functional specification of gai

Detection of the Third Heart Sound Based on Nonlinear Signal Decomposition and Time-Frequency Localization.

This study presents a precise way to detect the third ( S3 ) heart sound, which is recognized as an important indication of heart failure, based on nonlinear single decomposition and time-frequency localization. The detection of the S3 is obscured due to its significantly low energy and frequency. Even more, the detected S3 may be misunderstood as an abnormal second heart sound with a fixed split, which was not addressed in the literature. To detect such S3, the Hilbert vibration decomposition method is applied to decompose the heart sound into a certain number of subcomponents while intactly

Separation of heart sounds and heart murmurs by Hilbert transform envelogram.

Heart sounds and murmurs provide crucial diagnosis information for several heart diseases such as natural or prosthetic valve dysfunction and heart failure. Many pathological conditions of the cardiovascular system cause murmurs and aberrations in heart sounds. Phonocardiography provides the clinician with a complementary tool to record the heart sounds heard during auscultation. The advancement of intra-cardiac phonocardiography, combined with modern digital processing techniques, has strongly renewed researchers' interest in studying heart sounds and murmurs. This paper presents an algorithm

Spectrum analysis in postural strategy on static tests in a healthy population.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The power spectral density can be used to find a hidden behaviour in a physical system. We studied postural behaviour in a healthy population, by means of power spectral density, and compared it with a situation of complete immobility. METHODS: A group of healthy volunteers carried out the modified Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction in Balance. A fibre optic gyroscope device was used to record the data. We compared the power spectral density in these tests and with another recording where the device was motionless. We looked for significant differences using th

Prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation using recurrence plot-based features of the RR-interval signal.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and increases the risk of stroke. Predicting the onset of paroxysmal AF (PAF), based on noninvasive techniques, is clinically important and can be invaluable in order to avoid useless therapeutic intervention and to minimize risks for the patients. In this paper, we propose an effective PAF predictor which is based on the analysis of the RR-interval signal. This method consists of three steps: preprocessing, feature extraction and classification. In the first step, the QRS complexes are detected from the electrocardiogram (ECG) sig

Automated identification of ERP peaks through Dynamic Time Warping: an application to developmental dyslexia.

OBJECTIVE: This article proposes a method to automatically identify and label event-related potential (ERP) components with high accuracy and precision. METHODS: We present a framework, referred to as peak-picking Dynamic Time Warping (ppDTW), where a priori knowledge about the ERPs under investigation is used to define a reference signal. We developed a combination of peak-picking and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) that makes the temporal intervals for peak-picking adaptive on the basis of the morphology of the data. We tested the procedure on experimental data recorded from a control group and
