Schizophrenia, narrative and change: Andalusian care homes as novel sociocultural context.

This study explores qualitative changes in the life narratives of persons diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia who were receiving recovery treatment in special care homes in Andalusia, Spain. These narratives are related to patients' construction of social identity and the recovery process. Initially, 10 narrative interviews were performed. The first five patients (Group 1) had lived at the homes for only 3 months, while the other five (Group 2) had been there for 61.4 months. Two years after the initial interviews, three patients from Group 1 were interviewed once more. The qualitative analy

Behavior Evaluation Scale: validity in studies on social anxiety.

The present study was an initial effort to evaluate the use of the Behavior Evaluation Scale, a measure of the tendency to perceive behavior as pathological, in studies on social anxiety. 61 undergraduate students provided ratings on attributional dimensions and completed the scale as well as the Fear of Negative Evaluation questionnaire. There was a moderate correlation of .48 between the Behavior Evaluation Scale scores and fear of evaluation. In addition, participants who perceived the behavior as pathological scored higher on fear of evaluation only if they made internal or general attribu

National Lesbian Health Care Survey: implications for mental health care.

This article presents demographic, lifestyle, and mental health information about 1,925 lesbians from all 50 states who participated as respondents in the National Lesbian Health Care Survey (1984-1985), the most comprehensive study on U.S. lesbians to date. Over half the sample had had thoughts about suicide at some time, and 18% had attempted suicide. Thirty-seven percent had been physically abused as a child or adult, 32% had been raped or sexually attacked, and 19% had been involved in incestuous relationships while growing up. Almost one third used tobacco on a daily basis, and about 30%

Inducing and measuring identity levels in professional rugby players during immersion in an interactive virtual environment.

During a game, players experience substantial affective fluctuations, particularly through cognitive appraisal processes, which notably involves self-categorisation process. However, designing a mental training programme using the contextual elements of a game is still a challenge. Moreover, social contexts can be recreated in virtual reality and it has been demonstrated that people tend to have realistic affective and behavioural reactions to it. In this study, we recreated, in virtual reality, one of the key contexts that players can encounter during a rugby game, a try. After an embodiment

Reconstructing professional identity under acculturative stress: A longitudinal case study of a transnational language teacher.

As global teacher mobility increases, transnational educators often encounter acculturative stress and challenges to their professional identity. However, the psychological processes through which adaptation unfolds over time remain underexplored. Drawing on Ecological Systems Theory and the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, this study examines intercultural adaptation as a dynamic process shaped by changing environmental demands, cognitive appraisals, and coping responses. Using a longitudinal phenomenological case study design, the study followed an Asian English language teacher ove

Longitudinal Effects of Negative Ethnic-Racial Identity Affect on Internalizing Symptoms in Youth of Latiné Background Exposed to Interpersonal Trauma.

Objectives: Latiné youth in the US are at elevated risk for trauma exposure, but factors that contribute to their symptoms are not well studied. We examined the effects of interpersonal trauma (IPT) burden and negative affect about ethnic-racial identity (NERI-A) on internalizing symptoms following trauma exposure. Method: Participants were 1,006 US-born youth of Latiné background (mean age 15.4 years, 60% female at birth, and 70% identified as White) from the Childhood Trauma Research Network, a research consortium examining long-term outcomes of childhood trauma in Texas. Social Identity and Power: Older Adults as "Care Recipients" in Media Content on Family Care.

In the context of normalized forms of elder abuse and neglect in Canada, it is important to examine how constructions of family caregivers in the public sphere (re)produce potentially harmful assumptions. In this paper, we examine mainstream media construction of the "caregiver" identity in advocacy-related coverage over a 6-year time period (2016-2021). Relying on abductive formal analysis, we explore how care for older adults is presented as largely burdensome and linked to what are labeled the "complex care needs" of a growing aging population that is erroneously presented as largely incapa

Future orientation among young adult Arabs in Israel following the October 7 events.

In this exploratory study, we examined the future orientation of young adult Arabs in Israel, considering their sociocultural context and the ongoing sociopolitical tensions exacerbated by the October 7 events. Future orientation, defined as individuals' perceptions, aspirations, and plans for their future, plays a critical role in personal development and goal achievement. However, little research has focused on how discrimination, ethnonational identity, and political conflict shape future orientation among young adult Arabs in Israel. Through in-depth interviews with 34 participants aged 18

Football belongs to the people: A social identity perspective on attitudes toward the European Super League in the English Premier League.

The announcement of the European Super League (ESL) led to massive protests in England. While the ESL is officially being reshaped and may resurface, there is a dearth of empirical studies on the motives associated with attitudes toward the ESL. In this research, we explored attitudes toward the ESL among Premier League fans by conducting an online survey 36 h after the ESL announcement (N = 1,346 fans of Premier League clubs, among which 832 fans of the Big Six clubs involved in the ESL). Fans of the Big Six held more positive attitudes toward the ESL compared to fans of the Other 14 Premier

Cultural identity in Siberia and in analytical practice.

This paper discusses the main features of Siberian identity formed throughout the historical development of Siberia under the influence of social, economic, geographical, climatic, and other factors. Siberian cultural identity is closely connected with the mythology and ancient religion of the indigenous peoples of Siberia - shamanism, whose rituals, images, symbols, and motifs are often manifested in the clients' dreams. Following an in-depth study of Siberian history and culture, I formulate a complex of homelessness rooted in a deep collective trauma that left its imprint on people's psyche

The Indirect Effect of Ethnic Identity on Marijuana Use Through School Engagement: An African American High School Sample.

BACKGROUND: African American marijuana use is associated with many negative social, emotional, and health-related consequences. Of significance, over recent years this population has shown an increase in use. In the literature, ethnic identity and school engagement are prominent protective factors against substance use. OBJECTIVE: This study will examine how these protective factors are related, specifically whether ethnic identity mitigates risk through school engagement to reduce marijuana use. METHOD: A path analysis was conducted with 437 African American high school students (41% male)

Social comparison processes and catastrophising in fibromyalgia: A path analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In addition to coping strategies, social comparison may play a role in illness adjustment. However, little is known about the role of contrast and identification in social comparison in adaptation to fibromyalgia. AIM: To evaluate through a path analysis in a sample of fibromyalgia patients, the association between identification and contrast in social comparison, catastrophising and specific health outcomes (fibromyalgia illness impact and psychological distress). MATERIAL AND METHOD: 131 Spanish fibromyalgia outpatients (mean age: 50.15, SD = 11.1) filled out a questionnaire.

Fleshy specificity: (re)considering transsexual subjects in lesbian communities.

The transsexual subject position has recently been subsumed under the labeling "transgender." This article considers the implications of this new labeling for transsexual subjects and their capacity to be incorporated into, or at least configured as affiliated with, lesbian communities and their popularization of transgender terminology. By tracing the complicated academic and political etymology of "transgender," this article shows how the term unfairly erases the lived experiences of transsexual subjects by ignoring their specificities in the flesh. The article concludes by offering alternat

"I only read about myself on bathroom walls": the need for research on the mental health of lesbians and gay men.

The very recent history of pathologizing homosexuality still has a strong impact on the public in general and mental health professionals in particular. In contrast to the early research on sexual reorientation of lesbians and gay men, there is relatively little empirical research on the mental health issues of lesbians and gay men. Whether researchers choose to define sexual orientation by sexual behavior, self-definition, or membership in lesbian and gay community groups will have an impact on the results. Research on mental health issues that include lesbians, gay men, and heterosexual wome

The impact of ethnic self-identity on post-migration social integration of young rural to urban migrants in China: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-migration social integration is a pressing concern for young ethnic-minority migrants in urban China. This study examines how ethnic self-identity shapes this integration process from the migrant's own lived perspectives. Using an interpretative phenomenological approach, we regard young migrants as subjects of meaning-making rather than objects to be measured. Ecological systems theory, social identity theory, and social cognitive models provide the analytical frameworks for understanding how ethnic identity is negotiated within destination-city contexts. METHODS: We conduct

'All in the same boat'? Patient and carer attitudes to peer support and social comparison in Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

This paper explores attitudes to peer support among people with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and their family carers. It reports findings from a secondary analysis of data from two UK interview studies conducted by the authors. The process of secondary analysis is reported in detail. 48 people with MND and 22 carers were interviewed in 2005-2007. The authors identified narrative extracts on peer support from their own datasets and exchanged them for independent thematic analysis. Subsequent discussion, drawing on literature on support groups and social comparison, led to an exploration of two o

Toward an integrative CAPS approach to racial/ethnic relations.

The original CAPS formulation focused on the role of the individual's CAPS system in relation to situations, formalizing a person-situation framework. Subsequent research and theorizing on the culturally embedded CAPS system (C-CAPS) began to spell out how culture, context, and group-level processes intersect with both persons and situations. The contributions in this special section provide insights into the enormous complexity and the multiple layers through which context and persons "make each other up" in racial/ethnic relations. The challenge for personality psychologists is to examine an
