BACKGROUND: Few data are available on the effect of social ties on dementia development. This study explored whether single social network components and different degrees of the social connections affect dementia incidence.
METHODS: A community-based cohort of 1203 non-demented people, living at home in the Kungsholmen district of Stockholm, Sweden, and who had good cognition, was followed for an average period of 3 years. On the basis of medical and psychological data, 176 patients were diagnosed with dementia according to the criteria of the third edition revision of the Diagnostic and Sta

BACKGROUND: Globally, tuberculosis disease (TB) is more common among males than females. Recent research proposes that differences in social mixing by sex could alter infection patterns in TB. We examine evidence for two mechanisms by which social-mixing could increase men's contact rates with TB cases. First, men could be positioned in social networks such that they contact more people or social groups. Second, preferential mixing by sex could prime men to have more exposure to TB cases.
METHODS: We compared the networks of male and female TB cases and healthy matched controls living in Kamp

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between perceived social media hiking content and hiking participation intention among Chinese Generation Z consumers. It further tested whether this relationship was consistent with a serial mediation pattern involving travel inspiration and destination image, and whether social connectedness moderated these associations. Node-level network analysis was also used to identify key relational structures among construct items and dimensions.
METHODS: An online questionnaire survey was conducted among 1,186 Chinese Generation Z consumers with prior

BACKGROUND: Annually, more than 3500 US infants die suddenly and unexpectedly. Many sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) are preventable with greater adherence to safe infant sleep guidelines. There are racial and economic disparities in guideline adherence and SUID rates. Education alone has proven ineffective at altering behavior for many parents, and social networks and social norms regarding infant care have been found to influence rates of unsafe sleep. Using the power of social networks to shape social norms by delivering education through moderated online social media groups provides

OBJECTIVE: Current predictive models for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) largely overlook the role of social network factors. This study aimed to develop and validate an early GDM prediction model by integrating social network characteristics with traditional non-invasive predictors using machine learning (ML).
METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 2,433 pregnant individuals from four branches of Qingdao University Affiliated Hospital as the model development cohort and external validation cohort. After screening variables via univariate analysis, significant predictors were use

PURPOSE: Understanding how social media use (SMU) embedded in daily routines influences mental health in older adulthood is crucial. We explored whether integration-based SMU relates to depressive symptoms and whether social support mediates that link, considering online network size.
METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 371 community-dwelling adults aged ≥55 years measured SMU integration, social support, depressive symptoms, demographics, health, and network size. Mediation analysis with bias-corrected bootstrapping assessed direct and indirect paths.
RESULTS: Greater SMU integration corres

Loneliness is linked to negative mental health outcomes like depression and social anxiety. However, it is unclear how loneliness and these conditions are connected. This study aims to address two questions: (a) Are there pathways connecting loneliness to these conditions? (b) What symptoms play a role in these pathways? Using network analyses, the study examined a representative sample of 962 adults from the UK (mean age = 46, females = 492). The network analysis revealed four dimensions: depression, social anxiety and two dimensions for loneliness (isolation and social connectedness). Two di

Support from social networks buffers against negative effects of stress but is disrupted by incarceration. Few studies examine incarceration, social support networks, and health among Black sexual minority men (BSMM) and Black transgender women (BTW). We conducted a secondary analysis using HIV Prevention Trials Network 061 (HPTN 061), a sample of BSMM/BTW recruited from six US cities. We measured associations between recent incarceration reported at six months follow-up and social support networks at twelve months follow-up, and cross-sectional associations between support networks and twelve

Oxytocin (OXT) modulates social behaviors. However, the administration of exogenous OXT in humans produces inconsistent behavioral changes, affecting future consideration of OXT as a treatment for autism and other disorders with social symptoms. Inter-individual variability in social functioning traits might play a key role in how OXT changes brain activity and, therefore, behavior. Here, we investigated if inter-individual variability might dictate how single-dose intranasal OXT administration (IN-OXT) changes spontaneous neural activity during the eyes-open resting state. We used a double-bl

INTRODUCTION: Psychological, socio-demographics, and clinical factors play an important role in patients with COVID-19, but their relationship is complex. The network approach might be used to disentangle complex interactions in different systems. Using data from a multicentre, cross-sectional, survey among patients with COVID-19 in Spain (July-November 2020), we investigated the network structure of mental disorders symptoms, social support, and psychological resilience, and changes in network structures according to the presence of a pre-existing mental disorder or hospitalization for COVID-

Research on social support following sport-related concussion (SRC) has largely been examined from the athlete perspective. This qualitative study explored social support interactions during recovery following SRC. We conducted semi-structured interviews with six athletes and 16 individuals who were identified as being part of the athletes' social support network (e.g., teammates, friends, or family members). All 22 participants in this study completed a timeline mapping activity, which allowed participants to share details about the athletes' SRC recovery, including the type and timing of sup

BACKGROUND: Interprofessional education (IPE) has been promoted as a breakthrough in healthcare because of the impact when professionals work as a team. However, despite its inception dating back to the 1960s, its science has taken a long time to advance. There is a need to theorize IPE to cultivate creative insights for a nuanced understanding of IPE. This study aims to propose a research agenda on social interaction by understanding the measurement scales used and guiding researchers to contribute to the discussion of social processes in IPE.

BACKGROUND: Successful facilitation of patient-centred interventions for self-management support has traditionally focussed on individual behaviour change. A social network approach to self-management support implicates the need for facilitation that includes an orientation to connecting to and mobilizing support and resources from other people and the local environment.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the facilitation processes through which engagement with a social network approach to self-management is achieved.
METHOD: Thematic analysis was used to analyse data from a longitudinal study design us

Background and aims: Sports betting is expanding rapidly in sub-Saharan Africa, yet the network structure of gambling-related cognitions and risk indicators remains understudied. This study analyzed these cognitions and their financial risk, psychological, and social correlates among DRC sports bettors. Methods: A cross-sectional sample of 2261 sports bettors (85.9% male; mean age = 25.59 years, SD = 5.79) was recruited at Kinshasa betting venues (March-May 2026). The Gambling-Related Cognitions Scale (GRCS; α = 0.924) was administered alongside financial, psychological, and social measures. N

Echolocating bats are among the most social and vocal of all mammals. These animals are ideal subjects for functional MRI (fMRI) studies of auditory social communication given their relatively hypertrophic limbic and auditory neural structures and their reduced ability to hear MRI gradient noise. Yet, no resting-state networks relevant to social cognition (e.g., default mode-like networks or DMLNs) have been identified in bats since there are few, if any, fMRI studies in the chiropteran order. Here, we acquired fMRI data at 7 Tesla from nine lightly anesthetized pale spear-nosed bats (Phyllost

Hubs in the brain network are the regions with high centrality and are crucial in the network communication and information integration. Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) exhibit wide range of abnormality in the hub regions and their connected functional connectivity (FC) at the whole-brain network level. Study of the hubs in the brain networks supporting complex social behavior (social brain network, SBN) would contribute to understand the social dysfunction in patients with SCZ. Forty-nine patients with SCZ and 27 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to undertake the resting-state magnetic r

OBJECTIVE: The social environment influences women's cardiometabolic health across the lifespan, but little is known about women's cardiometabolic health in the time surrounding birth. The goals of the present study were to use a person-centered approach to characterize social relationship profiles of low-to-middle income Black, Latina, and White women and test associations with postpartum cardiometabolic risk.
METHOD: Data were collected by the Community Child Health Network (CCHN), a community-based participatory research network (Nanalytic sample = 1,328). Home interviews at 1, 6, and 12 m

OBJECTIVES: Guided by the social compensation hypothesis, this study examined longitudinal pathways linking multidimensional social media use (SMU) to positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) among family caregivers of people with dementia. Specifically, we tested whether perceived social support (PSS) mediates the association between SMU and PAC and whether offline social network size moderates the SMU-PSS pathway.
METHODS: A 3-wave time-lagged panel design was conducted over 6 months. Data were collected from a final analytic sample of 417 family caregivers in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Path
