Genetic influences on learning disabilities and speech and language disorders.

This paper is a comprehensive review of known examples of genetically influenced learning disabilities (LDs) and speech and language disorders (SLDs). The review is divided between 2 broad classes of studies: (a) those which begin with an LD or SLD phenotype that appears to be familial and attempt to learn more about the specifics of genetic transmission, if any; and (b) those which begin with a group of individuals, all of whom share a given documented genetic risk factor, to see if it leads to a specific LD or SLD. Included in the first category are familial dyslexia, stuttering, and other s

What can developmental disorders tell us about the neurocomputational constraints that shape development? The case of Williams syndrome.

The uneven cognitive phenotype in the adult outcome of Williams syndrome has led some researchers to make strong claims about the modularity of the brain and the purported genetically determined, innate specification of cognitive modules. Such arguments have particularly been marshaled with respect to language. We challenge this direct generalization from adult phenotypic outcomes to genetic specification and consider instead how genetic disorders provide clues to the constraints on plasticity that shape the outcome of development. We specifically examine behavioral studies, brain imaging, and

Speech and Language Therapy Services for Multilingual Children with Migration Background: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Germany.

Speech, language, and communication needs are particularly common among multilingual and migrant children. More than every third child in Germany has a migrant background. In the city of Bremen, this figure is even higher, including refugee children. The availability of comprehensive data on the provision and uptake of speech and language therapy (SLT) services is still inadequate, especially for multilingual children. However, health-monitoring programs report that migrants differ in many health-related areas from the majority population, mainly in barriers in health care. This study examines

Aetiological relationship between language performance and autistic-like traits in childhood: a twin study.

BACKGROUND: Impairments in language and communication are core features of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The basis for this association is poorly understood. How early language is related to each of the triad of impairments characteristic of ASDs is also in need of clarification. AIMS: This is the first study that aims to determine the extent to which shared genetic and environmental factors underlie the association between early language performance and autistic-like traits (ALTs) in middle childhood. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Data came from a population-based twin sample (n = 6087 pairs) a

Brain morphology in children with specific language impairment.

The planum temporale and pars triangularis have been found to be larger in the left hemisphere than the right in individuals with normal language skills. Brain morphology studies of individuals with developmental language disorders report reversed asymmetry or symmetry of the planum, although the bulk of this research has been completed on adults with dyslexia. Pars triangularis has not been studied in the developmental language impaired population. In this study, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used for quantitative comparisons of the planum temporale (Wernicke's area) and pars triangula

Concurrent and longitudinal associations of developmental language disorder with peer victimization in adolescence: evidence from a co-twin study.

BACKGROUND: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) experience higher levels of peer victimization than their peers. However, it is not known if such associations reflect genetic and environmental confounding. We used a co-twin control design to investigate the association of language difficulties (DLD and separately poor pragmatic language) with peer victimization and compare the developmental trajectories of peer victimization across adolescence for those with and without language difficulties. METHODS: Participants were 3,400 pairs of twins in the Twins Early Development Study

Mind Language Disturbances and PET-Signs of Depression vs Alzheimer's Disease: Are There Any Common Patterns Identified?

BACKGROUND: There is a broad appreciation that a diagnosis of depression (D) in the elderly is a strong risk factor for incident dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Indeed, the two disorders might constitute a dyad, although their causal relationship is uncertain, given the likely bidirectional and compounding effects of social withdrawal and loss of previous activities, and the manifestation of language disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and social disruption that are typical of both conditions. We argue that language declines in D and AD share common patterns and biological un

Familial phonological disorders: four pedigrees.

The pedigrees of 4 children with a severe phonological disorder demonstrating three generations of members with speech/language problems are presented. All 4 probands were female with two mothers, two fathers, and five out of six siblings affected. All pedigrees contained family members with dyslexia and learning disabilities as well as speech disorders. Family members varied in the type of speech problems that they demonstrated and the severity of their disorder, thus suggesting variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance. An autosomal dominant mode, a multifactorial-polygenic model, and

The relationship between gamma-band neural oscillations and language skills in youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their first-degree relatives.

BACKGROUND: Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have co-occurring language impairments and some of these autism-specific language difficulties are also present in their non-autistic first-degree relatives. One of the possible neural mechanisms associated with variability in language functioning is alterations in cortical gamma-band oscillations, hypothesized to be related to neural excitation and inhibition balance. METHODS: We used a high-density 128-channel electroencephalography (EEG) to register brain response to speech stimuli in a large sex-balanced sample of participants:

Emerging issues in speech therapy in Iran.

This report is a short review of the form and content of speech and language therapy services and the trend of their institutionalization in Iran. A summary of formal education in speech and language therapy in Iran as originated by establishing a 4-year BS rehabilitation program in the College of Rehabilitation Sciences in Tehran is given. Since then, speech and language rehabilitation programs have been expanding both in size and quality, resulting in about 1,000 speech therapists practicing in hospitals and rehabilitation centers throughout the country. The expansion of graduate programs at

Auditory processing and the development of language and literacy.

This paper considers evidence for basic auditory processing impairments associated with dyslexia and specific language impairment, against a back-drop of findings from studies of the normal development of auditory and phonological processing. A broad range of auditory impairments have been implicated in the aetiology of these language-learning disorders, including deficits in discriminating the temporal order of rapid sequences of auditory signals, elevated thresholds for frequency discrimination and for detection of amplitude and frequency modulation, impaired binaural processing and increase

Clinical features, behaviour and language in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is associated with intellectual disability and multiple congenital anomalies. A female patient with WHS was evaluated at two different times, in childhood and adolescence. Clinical examinations of various medical specialties and assessments of language and behaviour were carried out. In childhood, she showed signs of autism spectrum disorder, as well as other phenotypic characteristics. The impact of this chromosomal anomaly has had repercussions on neurodevelopment and needs to be better understood. This case highlights the serious impairment in both language an

Differentiating psychosis versus fluent aphasia.

Following a stroke, a patient may present with varying degrees of neurological impairment, depending on the area of the brain which is damaged. Specifically, damage to the left cortical hemisphere may result in aphasia. The characteristic speech in a patient with an aphasia caused by a stroke can be similar to the speech in some patients with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders. In a new patient without a reliable history who presents with suspected aphasia, it is important to include psychotic disorders as part of the differential diagnosis. Failure to differentiate psychotic disorders

Why is joint attention a pivotal skill in autism?

Joint attention abilities play a crucial role in the development of autism. Impairments in joint attention are among the earliest signs of the disorder and joint attention skills relate to outcome, both in the 'natural course' of autism and through being targeted in early intervention programmes. In the current study, concurrent and longitudinal associations between joint attention and other social communication abilities measured in a sample of infants with autism and related pervasive developmental disorders at age 20 months, and language and symptom severity at age 42 months, were examined.

Predicting Developmental Language Disorder in Bilinguals From Multiple Sources of Evidence: A Decision Tree Approach.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists consider multiple pieces of assessment data when making diagnostic decisions for bilingual children. The current study explored the converging evidence framework by applying a decision tree model, a user-friendly prediction tool, to identify bilingual children with developmental language disorder (DLD) using multiple assessment data. METHOD: One hundred eighty-six Spanish-English bilingual children in kindergarten completed a bilingual language assessment battery, consisting of parents' and teachers' questionnaires, standardized language assessment, narra

[Psychometric speech studies in Alzheimer's dementia with the Aachen aphasia test].

Dementias of the Alzheimer type seem to be frequently accompanied by language disturbances. These may represent a feature which can be of help in distinguishing them from other types of dementias. We used the Aachen aphasia test in 32 patients suffering from Alzheimer dementia according to research criteria, and a mixed sample of 35 patients suffering from other dementias. From these 2 groups 2 subsamples of 21 patients each were gathered which were comparable with regard to age, disease onset, level of education, verbal intelligence and severity of senility. Nevertheless it was possible to di

Speech and language therapy approaches to managing primary progressive aphasia.

The term primary progressive aphasia (PPA) describes a group of neurodegenerative disorders with predominant speech and language dysfunction as their main feature. There are three main variants - the semantic variant, the nonfluent or agrammatic variant and the logopenic variant - each with specific linguistic deficits and different neuroanatomical involvement. There are currently no curative treatments or symptomatic pharmacological therapies. However, speech and language therapists have developed several impairment-based interventions and compensatory strategies for use in the clinic. Unfort

Issues in Identification and Assessment of Children with Autism and a Proposed Resource Toolkit for Speech-Language Pathologists.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased significantly in the last decade as have treatment choices. Nonetheless, the vastly diverse autism topic includes issues related to naming, description, iden-tification, assessment, and differentiation from other neu-rodevelopmental conditions. ASD issues directly impact speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who often see these children as the second contact, after pediatric medical practitioners. Because of shared symptomology, differentiation among neurodevelopmental disorders is crucial as it impacts treatment, educati

[The validity of the SET 5-10 (language level test for children aged between five and ten years): first analyses].

INTRODUCTION: No other child developmental domain is as frequently affected by disorders as language acquisition. The SET 5-10 (language level test for children aged between 5 and 10 years), was developed to assess specific language disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the ability of the SET 5-10 to differentiate between the developmental increases of speech competence, present deficits resulting from previous speech deficits and the probability of assessing possible speech deficits of children with an immigrant background. METHODS: Based on data of the norm sample (n=1,052; 51.8% femal

Developmental Outcomes for Children at High Risk of Dyslexia and Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

We followed children at family risk of dyslexia and children with preschool language difficulties from age 3½, comparing them with controls (N = 234). At age 8, children were classified as having dyslexia or Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and compared at earlier time points with controls. Children with dyslexia have specific difficulties with phonology and emergent reading skills in the preschool period, whereas children with DLD, with or without dyslexia, show a wider range of impairments including significant problems with executive and motor tasks. For children with both dyslexia and
