Technical note: Evaluation of a triaxial accelerometer for monitoring selected behaviors in dairy calves.

The objectives of this study were (1) to develop an algorithm for the acceleration sensor of the Smartbow Eartag (Smartbow GmbH, Weibern, Austria) to distinguish between postures (lying and standing or locomotion) and to detect 6 kinds of activities (milk intake, water intake, solid feed intake, ruminating, licking or sucking without milk intake, and other activities) in dairy calves and (2) to evaluate this sensor for identifying these behaviors in dairy calves compared with observations from video. Accelerometers were applied to the left ears of 15 preweaned Holstein dairy calves. Calves wer

Hypotonia and poor feeding in an infant exposed to lamotrigine and valproic acid in utero.

Lamotrigine has been considered a safe new-generation antiepileptic drug during the perinatal period for both mothers and infants. Despite the concerns regarding its possible teratogenic effect, very limited data have been reported on the adverse effects of perinatal lamotrigine exposure. Herein, we report a case of an infant with hypotonicity and poor feeding who was exposed to lamotrigine in utero. The drug interaction probability scale indicated a probable relationship between sepsis-like symptoms and exposure to lamotrigine and valproic acid in utero in this infant.

Early "sham" feeding of neonates promotes oral feeding after delayed primary repair of major congenital esophageal anomalies.

BACKGROUND: To promote the appropriate and early development of the suck and swallow mechanism, we instituted a "sham" feeding protocol in infants undergoing delayed primary repair of an esophageal atresia anomaly. METHODS: Four patients who were born with esophageal atresia required delayed repair and were sham fed before surgical correction. Each infant started with a small volume of oral feeds by using a bottle/nipple with a continuous Replogle suction system placed nasally into the esophageal pouch. They were carefully monitored. The volume of feeds was slowly increased as tolerated. RES

Association between allergic rhinitis, bottle feeding, non-nutritive sucking habits, and malocclusion in the primary dentition.

AIM: To determine the association between allergic rhinitis, bottle feeding, non-nutritive sucking habits, and malocclusion in the primary dentition. METHODS: Data were collected on 1160 children aged 4-5 years, who had been longitudinally followed since the age of 4 months, when they were admitted to nurseries in a suburban area of Tampico-Madero, Mexico. Periodically, physical examinations were conducted and a questionnaire was given to their parents or tutors. RESULTS: Malocclusion was detected in 640 of the children (51.03% had anterior open bite and 7.5% had posterior cross-bite). Aller

Retronasal or internasal olfaction can mediate odor-guided behaviors in newborn mice.

Studies of olfactory deprivation have most frequently used unilateral naris occlusion to effect deprivation. Recent psychophysical evidence suggests that adult rodents with either acute or chronic naris occlusion show little decrement in olfactory ability. In this study the effect of naris occlusion coupled with ipsilateral or contralateral olfactory bulb deafferentation on odor-guided behaviors was tested in neonatal mice. Animals that received bilateral bulbectomy or control manipulation were also included. In Experiment 1, olfactory lesions were produced by bulb aspiration on the second day

Transitions in the dehydration-induced inhibition of milk intake in suckling rats.

The effects of acute cellular or extracellular dehydration on milk intake via suckling were determined in rats 5, 10, 15, and 20 days of age. Milk was made available 10 times to each rat pup by the intravenous infusion of oxytocin to anesthetized test dams. Prior to 15 days of age, milk intake was not affected by either intracellular or extracellular dehydration. In rats 15 days and older, however, both forms of dehydration reduced milk intake at the nipple. Thus, dehydration starts to inhibit suckling behavior at the onset of weaning, when food and water are both taken directly from the envir

The role of saliva in dental erosion and a prosthetic approach to treatment: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe the relationship of some salivary parameters to dental erosion resulting from excessive citric acid consumption and present a description of a prosthetic approach used to restore the damaged dentition of a patient with severe erosion. BACKGROUND: The high consumption of dietary sources of acids can lead to erosion or the excessive wear of dental hard tissues. Erosion may be modified by salivary parameters such as flow rate, pH, and buffering capacity. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) restorations and composite resin veneers can be used successfully to

Ankyloglossia: assessment, incidence, and effect of frenuloplasty on the breastfeeding dyad.

OBJECTIVE: Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants can cause ineffective latch, inadequate milk transfer, and maternal nipple pain, resulting in untimely weaning. The question of whether the performance of a frenuloplasty benefits the breastfeeding dyad in such a situation remains controversial. We wished to 1) define significant ankyloglossia, 2) determine the incidence in breastfeeding infants, and 3) measure the effectiveness of the frenuloplasty procedure with respect to solving specific breastfeeding problems in mother-infant dyads who served as their own controls. METHODS: We examined 27

Efficacy of facilitated tucking combined with non-nutritive sucking on very preterm infants' pain during the heel-stick procedure: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Reducing acute pain in premature infants during neonatal care improves their neurophysiological development. The use of pharmacological and non-pharmacological analgesia, such as sucrose, is limited per day, particularly for very preterm infants. Thus, the usual practice of non-nutritive sucking is often used alone. Facilitated tucking could be an additional strategy to non-nutritive sucking for reducing pain. To the best of our knowledge, no randomized trial has compared the combination of facilitated tucking and non-nutritive sucking to non-nutritive sucking alone. OBJECTIVES: T

Breastfeeding and delivery room neonatal collapse.

Sudden unexpected neonatal collapse in the delivery room is a rare occurrence in healthy term infants. Upper airway obstruction may occur from improper positioning of the newborn even while breastfeeding. Such occlusion may have dire consequences if not recognized immediately. We report 2 healthy term neonates who suffered respiratory arrest while in the mother's arms and attempting breastfeeding. In each case, rapid response by the delivery room nurse averted tragedy. Metabolic and infectious evaluations were unremarkable. Both babies have been well on subsequent examinations. We conclude tha

Sucrose and non-nutritive sucking for the relief of pain in screening for retinopathy of prematurity: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Screening is necessary for infants at risk of retinopathy of prematurity. Despite local anaesthetic drops, infants find eye examinations distressing, displaying behavioural and physiological changes indicating acute pain. Oral sucrose and non-nutritive sucking reduce pain responses associated with invasive procedures. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of oral sucrose and/or pacifier for reducing pain responses during eye examinations. METHODS: Forty infants <32 weeks gestation or <1500 g birth weight, in two neonatal units, were randomised to one of four interventions administered t

Prevalence of malocclusion in 4-6 year old Brazilian children.

The prevalence of malocclusion and the relationship with oral habits in Brazilian children from two public primary schools was evaluated. The sample was composed of 112 children with mean age of 61 +/- 6.67 months. The results demonstrated the presence of malocclusions in 75.8% (n = 85). The oral habits was related by 34.8% (n = 39). The open bite was the most prevalent malocclusion in the studied population and the oral habits was the decisive etiological factor.

The breastfeeding dyad: early assessment, documentation, and intervention.

The early postpartum period is a critical time for the establishment of lactation. Although newborns are well equipped with reflexes that enhance breastfeeding, many aspects of the experience can be assisted by the knowledge and skills of clinicians. To prevent negative outcomes for mothers and infants, it is essential that the clinician make an accurate assessment of breastfeeding technique and milk intake by the infant. An understanding of the mechanics of milk transfer serves as a foundation for developing interventions to be applied to the common breastfeeding challenges (including difficu

Ankyloglossia with deviation of the epiglottis and larynx.

We observed ankyloglossia to be usually accompanied by displacement of the epiglottis and larynx. Infants with this disease developed dyspnea and skin and hair abnormalities. In addition, they had other symptoms, such as a dark forehead, a frowning expression, a dark color around the lips, scanty eyebrows, swelling around the palpebrae, harsh respiratory sounds, hard crying, snoring, and frequent yawning. In spite of these abnormalities, they had been considered to be healthy by their pediatricians. Arterial oxygen percent saturation (SaO2) was measured while the infants were asleep, suckling,
