BACKGROUND: Dandruff is a scalp disorder affecting the male populace predominantly. Topical agents and synthetic drugs used for dandruff treatment have specific side effects including burning at the application site, depression, dizziness, headache, itching or skin rash, nausea, stomach pain, vision change, vomiting, discoloration of hair, dryness or oiliness of the scalp and increased loss of hair. Thus, essential oils and extracts from plants could be valuable in the treatment and prevention of dandruff.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES: This review aims to highlight current findings in dandruff occurrenc

Acne is the most common disease of the skin, yet only a fraction of acne sufferers are treated with prescription products by physicians. There is, however, a large and expanding market for over-the-counter (OTC) medications, many of which are not only effective but also well tolerated and cosmetically elegant. Given the presence of OTC acne medications on the television, the Internet, and store shelves, patients will be acutely aware of these OTC remedies and will have questions. Patients will expect dermatologists to advise them regarding products to use either as a sole therapy or in combina

Interest in the content of natural antioxidants in plant-based foods can be from the human health perspective, in terms of how these compounds might help promote one's health and wellness, or from the storage point-of-view, as the endogenous antioxidant constituents aid to extend a foodstuff's shelf-life. This chapter reports essential information about the mechanism of antioxidant action and methods employed for determination of their activity, classes of phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, lignans, stilbenes, tannins), sources of plant antioxidants (oil seeds, cereals, legumes, p

Over recent years, allergic contact dermatitis in children has repeatedly been reported as a significant clinical problem. It is generally accepted that allergic contact dermatitis is rare in the first years of life, and with increasing age (by the age of 10 years) reaches the incidence seen in adults. As in adults, metals are one of the most common sensitizers in children, along with rubber chemicals and fragrances. The influence of fashion trends and lifestyle such as piercing, decorative skin paintings, the hype of natural remedies and cosmetics (e.g. tea tree oil) or the use of cosmetical

Background: Essential oils (EOs) have shown antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activity, which may, alone or in combination with other substances, potentially be used for the development of new drugs. However, their chemical variability, depending on the species, varieties, or geographical origin (among other factors) determines different bioactivities that need to be evaluated. Methods: The antioxidant activity of Corymbia citriodora and eight Eucalyptus species EOs was determined using two different methods: the scavenging ability of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline

Chronic wound management demands multifunctional therapeutic strategies that simultaneously address excessive inflammation and oxidative stress. To meet this challenge, we engineered a three-dimensional biomimetic scaffold (CSSTF) by integrating collagen-based thermosensitive hydrogel, a SiO2-supported copper single-atom catalyst (Cu-SAC-SE), and tea tree oil-encapsulated liposomes (TTO@Lpo). This composite design enables sustained release of bioactive components, achieving synergistic ROS scavenging, mitochondrial protection, and suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis. Notably,

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are microscopic parasites that live around hair follicles or sebaceous glands and may cause chronic blepharitis. The aim of this outcome analysis was to assess the efficacy and patient preferences with regard to the currently recommended treatment options.
METHODS: All patients with microscopic evidence for Demodex blepharitis were informed about the currently published treatments and instructed about daily lid hygiene. Additional topical treatment options included tea tree oil (TTO) 5%, a cleansing foam containing 0.02% TTO (Naviblef®), and metronidazole 2% ointment

BACKGROUND: The evidence on the safety of topical preparations containing botanical extracts is limited.
OBJECTIVES: To assess (i) the use of botanically derived compounds in a large population, (ii) the incidence of cutaneous side-effects, and (iii) the diagnostic usefulness of patch testing.
METHODS: A questionnaire was used in 2661 patients to assess both the prevalence and type of topical botanical preparations used, and the occurrence of adverse skin reactions. Patients declaring adverse reactions were patch tested with (i) the Italian (SIDAPA) baseline series, (ii) an additional botani

Acne vulgaris is the most prevalent chronic skin disease in the United States, affecting nearly 50 million people per year, mostly adolescents and young adults. Potential sequelae of acne, such as scarring, dyspigmentation, and low self-esteem, may result in significant morbidity. Typical acne lesions involve the pilosebaceous follicles and the interrelated processes of sebum production, Cutibacterium acnes (previously called Propionibacterium acnes) colonization, and inflammation. Acne may be classified as mild, moderate, or severe based on the number and type of skin lesions. Multiple treatm

Antibiotics are frequently used in acne treatment and their prolonged use has led to an emergence of resistance. This study aimed to investigate the use of natural antimicrobials as an alternative therapy. The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of five commonly used essential oils (EOs) (tea tree, clove, thyme, mentha and basil EOs), and their possible mechanisms of action against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, were explored. The effect of the most potent EO on membrane permeability was elucidated and its anti-inflammatory action, when formulated as nanoemulsio

In the current issue of 'Harefuah', Livny et al present an article on the prevalence of Demodex parasites in patients with chronic blepharitis and healthy controls in Israel. This prospective case controlled study describes the quantitative connection between the number of parasites found on 6-8 sample eyelashes and chronic blepharitis, one of the most prevalent conditions in the general population and especially prevalent in the ophthalmologist office visits. Blepharitis symptoms may vary from being asymptomatic, chronic condition, dry eye, and sometimes even a severe compromise of ocular sur

The early post-hatching phase remains to be one of the most vulnerable phases in broiler production. Some essential oils have been reported to improve gut health and growth in broiler chickens when applied to post-hatching diets. However, in-feed applications are unable to prevent the health challenges observed immediately after hatching. Thus, pre-hatch interventions need to be considered. A research project was developed with the aim of investigating the impact of in ovo application of 27 selected essential oils (EOs) on foetal development with emphasis on gut integrity in broiler hatchlings

PURPOSE: To investigate in vitro effects of active ingredients in eye cleansing wipes and solutions on the life span of Demodex.
METHODS: Demodex mites were extracted by eyelash epilation method from volunteers who were found to have chronic demodex blepharitis during an ophthalmological examination. Preparations with three or more motile, live adult Demodex parasites were included in the study. Two drops of the test solution were dropped on the samples: saline, 2% tea tree oil (TTO; Osto®, AKD Medical products, Turkey), 7.5% TTO (Blefaritto®, Jeomed, Turkey), and 0.5% terpinen-4-ol (T4O; Ble

PURPOSE: Infestation with demodex mites has been linked to the development of chalazion, meibomian gland dysfunction, and blepharitis. An effective treatment is the eyelid application of terpinen-4-ol (T4O), a tea tree oil component. However, T4O is also known to be toxic to nonocular epithelial cells. We hypothesize that T4O toxicity also extends to human meibomian gland epithelial cells (HMGECs).
METHODS: Immortalized (I) HMGECs were cultured with varying concentrations (1.0%-0.001%) of T4O under proliferating or differentiating conditions up to 5 days. Experimental procedures included anal

The endothelium represents not only a simple cellular monolayer that lines the vascular tree in humans and other vertebrates. Depending on the location, the endothelium shows significant morphological and functional heterogeneity through differentiated expression of pro- and anticoagulant factors, presence and frequency of intercellular contacts, variable contractility, cell shape, and volume. Altogether, these properties are crucial for adjustment of the endothelial function and further maintenance of the adequate homeostasis in response in local microenvironmental changes. Endothelial cells

This study aims to present the in vitro inhibitory effect of Psidium guajava and Juglans regia leaf extracts on the main developer of acne lesions, Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), and other organisms that are isolated from acne lesions. Thirty-eight subjects (males and females) who had various types of acne were enrolled in the study. The contents of the acne lesions were cultured and the frequency of P. acnes (alone and with Staphylococci spp.) was 47%, whereas the frequencies for Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis were 13% and 24%, respectively. The antimicrobial activi

The rising concern of multidrug-resistant pathogens and the unavailability of new antibiotics in the discovery pipeline has generated the need for alternative approaches for their control. Essential oils (EOs) and essential oil's active components (EoCs) have been reported for their antimicrobial effect since long. In this study, we evaluated 11 EOs and 4 EoCs for their antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. Among EOs, oregano (zone of inhibition [ZOI] = 24.62 ± 8.10 mm), cinnamon (ZOI = 18.38 ± 5.88 mm), cassia (ZOI = 20.23 ± 4.61 mm), and thyme (ZOI = 13.77 ± 5.67 mm), and among EoCs, cinna

Impetigo is the most common bacterial skin infection in children two to five years of age. There are two principal types: nonbullous (70% of cases) and bullous (30% of cases). Nonbullous impetigo, or impetigo contagiosa, is caused by Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus pyogenes, and is characterized by honey-colored crusts on the face and extremities. Impetigo primarily affects the skin or secondarily infects insect bites, eczema, or herpetic lesions. Bullous impetigo, which is caused exclusively by S. aureus, results in large, flaccid bullae and is more likely to affect intertriginous area
