PURPOSE: To investigate the association between the longitudinal changes in both macular vessel density (mVD) and macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness (mGCIPLT) and visual field (VF) progression (including central VF progression) in open-angle glaucoma (OAG) patients with central visual field (CVF) damage at different glaucoma stages.
DESIGN: Retrospective longitudinal study.
PARTICIPANTS: This study enrolled 223 OAG eyes with CVF loss at baseline classified as early-to-moderate (133 eyes) or advanced (90 eyes) stage based on the VF mean deviation (MD) (-10 dB).

The Friedmann Visual Field Analyser Mark II is evaluated with a group of 301 normal eyes, 155 of which had an induced visual field defect. Measures of sensitivity and specificity are calculated from these data by criteria similar to those used by other researchers. The inadequacies of using pass/fail criteria in the clinical situation are discussed, and a solution is proposed in which each field response is scored and the score compared with those from normal and defective populations. An example is given of how this form of analysis could be incorporated into the clinical situation.

Automated perimetry is used for the assessment of visual function in a variety of ophthalmic and neurologic diseases. We report development and clinical testing of a compact, head-mounted, and eye-tracking perimeter (VirtualEye) that provides a more comfortable test environment than the standard instrumentation. Visually evoked cortical potentials were studied in six patients with a homonymous and six with a bitemporal hemianopia by presenting a pattern-reversal stimulus separately to a temporal or nasal retinal area and by recording the responses from leads over the hemispheres. Homonymous visual field defects are characterized by a reduction of VECPs from the affected hemisphere. The disturbance of VECPs in bitemporal hemianopia is more serious, since the fibres from both retinal halves may be damaged by a chiasm tumour.

Palinopsia, or perseveration of a previously viewed image, may be caused by drug use or by posterior visual pathway lesions. Most cases of palinopsia due to visual pathway lesions have an associated homonymous hemianopic visual field defect. We report two patients with palinopsia caused by structural lesions of the posterior visual pathway in the absence of visual field defects. Patients with palinopsia should undergo neuroimaging even in the presence of normal visual fields.
