BACKGROUND: While a female preponderance in unipolar depression is a consistent finding in community-based studies, determinants remain speculative. This study aimed to examine whether a female preponderance in certain anxiety disorders drives a gender difference in depression.
METHOD: The relevant data from the National Comorbidity Study (NCS) are analysed.
RESULTS: We observed a biphasic pattern in the emergence of a female preponderance in the depressive and anxiety disorders, with an initial pre-pubertal or early adolescent onset, and after attenuation in early to middle adulthood, re-em

The association between the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and psychiatric disorders is well-known to most clinicians, but the nature of the relationship is far from clear. There is an increased prevalence of psychiatric illness in IBS patients and an increase in IBS in psychiatric patients. Whether this association exists outside of treatment-seeking populations (i.e., in IBS sufferers who do not seek treatment) has not been well investigated. This paper will selectively review the existing literature regarding the association of IBS and psychiatric illness in both patient and nonpatient samp

In a sample of 131 patients with panic disorder, we explored both the presence of DSM-III-R criteria for hypochondriasis and the occurrence of illness phobia before the onset of panic disorder. To explore further the possible relationship between hypochondriacal features and panic-agoraphobic syndrome, we compared patients both with and without current hypochondriasis and then patients both with and without illness phobia before the onset of panic disorder. Finally, we investigated the relationship between premorbid phobic-anxious traits and hypochondriasis during panic disorder. No difference

Fifty-seven chronic agoraphobic outpatients were treated by 12 hours of exposure in vivo on four days over two weeks to check the effects of oral diazepam versus placebo during group exposure, group versus individual exposure, and high versus medium anxiety arousal during individual exposure. The controlled parallel design allowed comparative evaluation of each treatment condition to six months follow-up. Assessment was blind with respect to drug and psychological treatment. Patients in all treatment conditions improved significantly in phobias and in related life areas. Outcome to group expos

BACKGROUND: Interoceptive exposure (IE) to feared bodily sensations is a core component of cognitive-behavioral therapy for panic disorder (PD), but standard office-based IE can be perceived as aversive and tedious, potentially limiting engagement. Vigorous physical exercise may provide a more acceptable and health-promoting way to elicit interoceptive cues. Objective: To examine the feasibility and efficacy of a brief intermittent intense exercise (BIE) program, used as an IE strategy, compared with Jacobson's relaxation training (RT) in treatment-free patients with PD.
METHODS: In this pros

Kinesiophobia is particularly common in postoperative lung cancer patients, which causes patients may be reluctant to cough and move due to misperception, internal fear or fear of pain, and avoid rehabilitation training affecting postoperative recovery. Therefore, it is clinically important to discover the factors associated with the occurrence of kinesiophobia and to develop a prediction model. This study aims to investigate the occurrence of kinesiophobia in postoperative lung cancer patients and to develop a prediction model to assess its performance, thereby providing a reference for clini

Anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder (SAD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), agoraphobia (AG), and specific phobia (SP), are characterized by core features of excessive anxiety and fear. Furthermore, these disorders are often accompanied by avoidance behaviors. While avoidance is a common behavioral response, it may be a consequence of or a cocontributor to the anxiety and fear driving these disorders. This narrative review integrates the interactions among anxiety, fear, and avoidance behaviors across these five disorders and synthesizes findings from c

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorder is one of the most prevalent mental disorders. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is effective for treating anxiety disorders. However, no studies have investigated the cost-effectiveness of MBCT for anxiety disorders. We aimed to conduct a cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to clarify the cost-effectiveness of MBCT for anxiety disorders.
METHODS: A cost-effectiveness analysis alongside an RCT was conducted for 8 weeks in 40 patients with anxiety disorders at a university hospital. Patients (1) aged 20-75 years; (2)

(1) Background: Preclinical as well as population studies have connected general anesthesia and surgery with a higher risk of abnormal cognitive development, including emotional development. Gut microbiota dysbiosis in neonatal rodents during the perioperative period has been reported, however, the relevance of this to human children who undergo multiple anesthesia for surgeries is unknown. Given the emerging role of altered gut microbes in propagating anxiety and depression, we sought to study whether repeated infantile exposures to surgery and anesthesia affect gut microbiota and anxiety beh

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception for childhood and adolescent onset mental disorders, but we cannot predict its occurrence and do not know the neural mechanisms underlying comorbidity. We investigate if the effects of comorbid internalizing and externalizing disorders on anatomical differences represent a simple aggregate of the effects on each disorder and if these comorbidity-associated cortical surface differences relate to a distinct genetic underpinning.
METHODS: We studied the cortical surface area (SA) and thickness (CT) of 11,878 preadolescents (9-10 years

INTRODUCTION: Dual diagnosis (DD) is defined as the co-occurrence of at least a psychiatric disorder and at least an addictive disorder. Most studies about DD considered substance use disorders. In 2018, gaming disorder (GD) was recognized as a formal disorder and integrated into the category of addictive disorders in the 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases. Our objectives were to measure DD prevalence among GD patients and to assess factors associated with the presence of DD.

IMPORTANCE: Anxiety disorders have a lifetime prevalence of approximately 34% in the US, are often chronic, and significantly impair quality of life and functioning.
OBSERVATIONS: Anxiety disorders are characterized by symptoms that include worry, social and performance fears, unexpected and/or triggered panic attacks, anticipatory anxiety, and avoidance behaviors. Generalized anxiety disorder (6.2% lifetime prevalence), social anxiety disorder (13% lifetime prevalence), and panic disorder (5.2% lifetime prevalence) with or without agoraphobia are common anxiety disorders seen in primary care

INTRODUCTION: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common cause of immune-mediated non-scarring hair loss. Links between AA and common mental health, autoimmune and atopic conditions, and common infections have previously been described but remain incompletely elucidated and contemporary descriptions of the epidemiology of AA in the UK are lacking.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Retrospective study series using a large population-based cohort (5.2 million) from the Oxford Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Research and Surveillance Centre (RSC) database, exploring four themes: AA epidemiology, mental

BACKGROUND: Optimal anti-epileptic drug (AED) treatment maximises therapeutic response and minimises adverse effects (AEs). Key to therapeutic AED treatment is adherence. Non-adherence is often related to severity of AEs. Frequently, patients do not spontaneously report, and clinicians do not specifically query, critical AEs that lead to non-adherence, including sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction prevalence in patients with epilepsy ranges from 40 to 70%, often related to AEDs, epilepsy or mood states. This case reports lamotrigine-induced sexual dysfunction leading to periodic non-adheren

BACKGROUND: The great majority of mental disorders begin during adolescence or early adulthood, although they are often detected and treated later in life. To compare mental health status of college students and their non-college-attending peers whether working, attending a secondary school, or non-college-attending peers who are neither employed nor students or trainees (NENST) will allow to focus on high risk group.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) works-but not equally well for all patients. Less than 50% of patients with internalising disorders achieve clinically meaningful improvement, with negative consequences for patients and healthcare systems. The research unit (RU) 5187 seeks to improve this situation by an in-depth investigation of the phenomenon of treatment non-response (TNR) to CBT. We aim to identify bio-behavioural signatures associated with TNR, develop predictive models applicable to individual patients and enhance the utility of predictive analytics by collecting a natur

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD), frequently occurring with agoraphobia (AG), and depression are common mental disorders in primary care and associated with considerable individual and societal costs. Early detection and effective treatment of depression and PD/AG are of major importance. Cognitive behavioural exposure exercises have been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Practice team-based case management can improve clinical outcomes for patients with chronic diseases in primary care. The present study aims at evaluating the effects and cost-effectiveness of

BACKGROUND: The development of e-mental health interventions to treat or prevent mental illness and to enhance wellbeing has risen rapidly over the past decade. This development assists the public in sidestepping some of the obstacles that are often encountered when trying to access traditional face-to-face mental health care services.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of our study was to investigate the posttreatment effectiveness of five fully automated self-help cognitive behavior e-therapy programs for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A), obsessive

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among a population of patients examined in the emergency service of a French general hospital. They compared patients with and without psychiatric disorders. They also compared patients where the primary motive of emergency was psychiatric to those whose psychiatric disorders were secondarily diagnosed by a systematic assessment.
METHOD: Five hundred consecutive patients admitted to the emergency service of Bichat Claude Bernard Hospital (Paris, France) were interviewed with standardized questionnaires. Demographic detail
