The role of animals as a source of antimicrobial resistant nontyphoidal Salmonella causing invasive and non-invasive human disease in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) are associated with both diarrhea and bacteremia. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is common in NTS in low-middle income countries, but the major source(s) of AMR NTS in humans are not known. Here, we aimed to assess the role of animals as a source of AMR in human NTS infections in Vietnam. We retrospectively combined and analyzed 672 NTS human and animal isolates from four studies in southern Vietnam and compared serovars, sequence types (ST), and AMR profiles. We generated a population structure of circulating organisms and aimed to attribute sources o

Human infection with a zoonotic orthopoxvirus in the country of Georgia.

During 2013, cutaneous lesions developed in two men in the country of Georgia after they were exposed to ill cows. The men had never received vaccination against smallpox. Tests of lesion material with the use of a quantitative real-time polymerase-chain-reaction assay for non-variola virus orthopoxviruses were positive, and DNA sequence analysis implicated a novel orthopoxvirus species. During the ensuing epidemiologic investigation, no additional human cases were identified. However, serologic evidence of exposure to an orthopoxvirus was detected in cows in the patients' herd and in captured

Bartonella species in invasive rats and indigenous rodents from Uganda.

The presence of bartonellae in invasive rats (Rattus rattus) and indigenous rodents (Arvicanthis niloticus and Cricetomys gambianus) from two districts in Uganda, Arua and Zombo, was examined by PCR detection and culture. Blood from a total of 228 R. rattus, 31 A. niloticus, and 5 C. gambianus was screened using genus-specific primers targeting the 16S-23S intergenic spacer region. Furthermore, rodent blood was plated on brain heart infusion blood agar, and isolates were verified as Bartonella species using citrate synthase gene- (gltA) specific primers. One hundred and four fleas recovered fr

Subtyping Cryptosporidium ubiquitum,a zoonotic pathogen emerging in humans.

Cryptosporidium ubiquitum is an emerging zoonotic pathogen. In the past, it was not possible to identify an association between cases of human and animal infection. We conducted a genomic survey of the species, developed a subtyping tool targeting the 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) gene, and identified 6 subtype families (XIIa-XIIf) of C. ubiquitum. Host adaptation was apparent at the gp60 locus; subtype XIIa was found in ruminants worldwide, subtype families XIIb-XIId were found in rodents in the United States, and XIIe and XIIf were found in rodents in the Slovak Republic. Humans in the United S

Epizootiologic survey for Babesia microti among small wild mammals in northeastern Eurasia and a geographic diversity in the beta-tubulin gene sequences.

We previously reported that small wild rodents in Japan harbor two types of novel Babesia microti-like parasites (designated as Hobetsu and Kobe types), but not the type commonly found in the northeastern United States (U.S. type) where human babesiosis is endemic. To determine whether these new types of parasites are distributed in places surrounding Japan, an epizootiologic survey was undertaken in three geographically distant areas in northeastern Eurasia; South Korea, Vladivostok in Russia, and Xinjiang in China. Blood samples were collected from a total of 387 animals comprising 24 specie

Staphylococcus aureus-induced inflammation and bone destruction in experimental models of septic arthritis.

Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of septic arthritis. This disease often leads to severe joint destruction and high mortality. An experimental model of S. aureus arthritis has been developed to study the course of inflammation and joint destruction, to elucidate the role of bacterial and host factors for joint pathology and mortality, and to develop therapeutical and preventive devices against septic arthritis and sepsis. Results show that the innate immune system is crucial in defending the host against staphylococcal infection while components of the specific immune system, T a

The role of exposure to animals in the etiology of Campylobacter jejuni/coli enteritis.

To determine the role of animals as possible sources for human infection with Campylobacter jejuni/coli, 218 human cases of Campylobacter enteritis diagnosed among members of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, King County, Washington, from April 1982 through September 1983 were compared with 526 controls, randomly selected from Group Health Cooperative members. All subjects were questioned regarding animal exposures one week prior to illness (cases) or interview (controls). There was no increase in risk for C. jejuni/coli enteritis associated with contact with various animals. However, e

Integrating non-neonatal tetanus vaccination into an emergency department rabies PEP clinic: Real-world workload, documentation gaps, and VAERS-informed observation priorities.

Animal-bite and scratch visits to the emergency department (ED) often require time-sensitive decisions on rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) alongside tetanus prevention. In China, recent national standards and local implementation programs have framed non-neonatal tetanus prevention as an integrated medical-public health service model, yet integrated workflows and structured documentation remain uncommon in many tertiary hospitals. We reviewed patients presenting for their first recorded exposure to a dedicated ED rabies PEP clinic (8 Oct 2022-31 Oct 2025; n = 3,365) to describe real-worl

Hungarian tick-borne encephalitis viruses isolated from a 0.5-ha focus are closely related to Finnish strains.

Four tick-borne encephalitis virus strains were isolated from a small 0.5-ha focus over a six-year-long period (2011-2016) in Hungary. Two strains with identical genomes were isolated from Ixodes ricinus and Haemaphysalis concinna two months apart, which shows that the virus had not evolved separately in these tick species. Whole-genome sequencing of the virus revealed that the isolates differed from each other in 4 amino acids and 9 nucleotides. The calculated substitution rates indicated that the speed of genome evolution differs from habitat to habitat, and continuously changes even within

Complex epidemiology and zoonotic potential for Cryptosporidium suis in rural Madagascar.

Cryptosporidium spp. is the most important parasitic diarrheal agent in the world, is among the top four causes of moderate-to-severe diarrheal disease in young children in developing nations, and is problematic as an opportunistic co-infection with HIV. In addition, Cryptosporidium is a persistent challenge for livestock production. Despite its zoonotic potential, few studies have examined the ecology and epidemiology of this pathogen in rural systems characterized by high rates of overlap among humans, domesticated animals, and wildlife. To improve our understanding of the zoonotic potential

Prevalence of zoonotic Bartonella species among rodents and shrews in Thailand.

We investigated the prevalence of Bartonella species in 10 rodent and one shrew species in Thailand. From February 2008 to May 2010, a total of 375 small animals were captured in 9 provinces in Thailand. Bartonella strains were isolated from 57 rodents (54 from Rattus species and 3 from Bandicota indica) and one shrew (Suncus murinus) in 7 of the 9 provinces, and identified to the species level. Sequence analysis of the citrate synthase and RNA polymerase β subunit genes identified the 58 isolates from each Bartonella-positive animal as B. tribocorum in 27 (46.6%) animals, B. rattimassiliensis

Detection of the antibody to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus in sera of laboratory rodents infected with viruses of laboratory and newly isolated strains by ELISA using purified recombinant nucleoprotein.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to detect the antibody against lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) in sera of laboratory animals. In this ELISA system, LCMV-nucleoprotein (NP) expressed by recombinant baculovirus and purified with high molar urea was used as the antigen. Sera from laboratory animals experimentally infected with the Armstrong strain or the newly isolated M1 strain of LCMV were examined to detect anti-LCMV antibody by the ELISA system, and the reactivity was compared with that of IFA test. Regardless of LCMV strain, all the sera of adult mice inf

[Comparative study between 2 conjugates for the diagnosis of rabies in Cuba by direct immunofluorescence].

A comparison was made between the conjugate of national production made by "Carlos J. Finlay" Enterprise of Biological Products for diagnosing rabies by direct immunofluorescence and the viral antinucleocapsid conjugate manufactured by BIORAD that is commercialized at the international level. 150 samples of brain from different animal species were studied at the Rabies Reference Laboratory of "Pedro Kouri" Institute of Tropical Medicine from 2000 to 2002. On comparing both conjugates, there were obtained sensibility, specificity and concordance values of 100%, 94.3% and 98%, respectively. The

Genetic analysis of the outer surface protein C gene of Lyme disease spirochaetes (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) isolated from rodents in Taiwan.

The outer surface protein C gene (ospC) of Lyme disease spirochaetes (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) was analysed for the first time in Taiwan. The genetic identities of these Taiwan isolates (TWKM1-7) were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and sequence similarities of the PCR-amplified ospC gene amplicons. After cleavage by nuclease Dral, differential fragment patterns of PCR-amplified ospC DNA in relation to different genospecies of Lyme disease spirochaetes were observed and all of these Taiwan isolates were genetically affiliated to the genospecies of

An interstate outbreak of tick-borne relapsing fever among vacationers at a Rocky Mountain cabin.

In July 1995, an outbreak of acute febrile illness affected 11 (48%) of 23 family members from Nebraska and Kansas who had vacationed at a Colorado cabin in June. Similar symptoms were identified among five (17%) of 30 additional persons from Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, and Texas who had vacationed at the same cabin. Symptoms suggested tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF). Although no spirochetes were detected in available blood smears from five case-patients, Borrelia hermsii was cultured from the blood of one case-patient and two chipmunks trapped near the cabin. Case-patients were more likely t
