Probabilistic deep learning framework for dynamic carbon emission accounting of electric buses under grid uncertainty.

The electrification of public transit has emerged as a pivotal pathway for deep urban decarbonization. However, existing carbon accounting methods predominantly rely on static grid emission factors and deterministic energy models, often overlooking spatiotemporal variability and uncertainty propagation. To address this limitation, this study establishes a dynamic, uncertainty-aware framework for the carbon accounting of electric bus systems. A hybrid deep learning architecture integrating Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN), Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) networks, and an Atte

Prediction Equation Development for Methane-Related Traits Accounting for Physiological Traits in Japanese Black Cattle.

Reducing enteric methane (CH4) emissions from cattle is a priority in the agricultural sector. The total amount of CH4 emissions from beef cattle is larger than that from dairy cattle in Japan, and thus, it is important to quantify CH4 emission from beef cattle. The objective of this study was to investigate the physiological traits associated with methane-related traits and to develop a prediction equation that accounts for these physiological traits in Japanese Black cattle. Enteric CH4 emission (L/day) was predicted from the concentration of CH4 to carbon dioxide (CO2) ratio obtained by the

Energy Emissions Accounting Methods Can Determine Whether Direct Air Capture with Storage Achieves Net Removal.

The voluntary carbon market within the United States has expanded rapidly in recent years and enabled private companies and other organizations to provide revenue streams to carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. For a CDR technology to participate in the voluntary carbon market (VCM), the emissions associated with constructing and operating the technology must be less than the CO2 captured from the atmosphere. Assessing the extent to which this is true for direct air capture with storage (DACS), a relatively energy-intensive CDR technology, strongly depends on the accounting method used t

Accounting for Mobility in Air Pollution Exposure Estimates in Studies on Long-Term Health Effects.

INTRODUCTION: Large-scale epidemiological studies investigating long-term health effects of air pollution can typically only consider the residential locations of the participants, thereby ignoring the space-time-activity patterns that likely influence total exposure. People are mobile and can be exposed to considerably different levels of air pollution or air pollution mixtures when inside versus outside, commuting, recreating, or working. Neglecting these mechanisms in exposure assessment may lead to incorrect distributions of exposure over the population, which may, subsequently, lead to in

Association between antihypertensive medication use and kidney cancer risk: a meta-analysis accounting for hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Evidence that antihypertensive medication (AHTN) use is associated with an increased risk of kidney cancer (KC) is emerging. However, limited evidence is available on disentangling the effects of AHTN use on KC from hypertension, which is a risk factor for KC. We aimed to identify pooled estimates for the associations between AHTN use and KC risk, independent of hypertension. METHODS: We searched for observational studies that investigated the associations between AHTN use and KC through January 2025. To identify the independent effects of AHTN from hypertension, we conducted stra

Maternal Age Differences in Interpregnancy Interval and Preterm Birth Associations Accounting for Multiple Epidemiologic Biases.

BACKGROUND: People who recently gave birth are strongly advised to wait 6 months before attempting pregnancy. Interpregnancy intervals (IPI) of ≥ 18 months are considered optimal. Current guidance is not tailored based on maternal characteristics (e.g., age). OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether maternal age modifies IPI-preterm birth (PTB) associations. METHODS: From a US retrospective cohort of multiparae (1997-2011), we categorised IPI: < 6, 6-11, 12-17, 18-23 (reference), 24-59 or ≥ 60 months. PTB occurred before 37 0/7 weeks' gestation. We estimated risk ratios (RR) between IPI and PTB usin

An EEG Source Reconstruction Method Accounting for Ascending Sympathovagal Activity: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Characterizing the causal relationship between central neural activity and peripheral physiological dynamics has become a key objective in computational neuroscience research. Despite advancements in models leveraging electroencephalography (EEG) for non-invasive brain-heart interplay estimation, the specific intracortical sources underlying this interaction remain poorly understood. This study introduces a novel methodological framework for investigating how peripheral neural control of heartbeat dynamics influences brain activity at the source reconstruction level. By integrating high-densit

Optimizing registration strategy for facial scanning data accounting for varied precision in different facial regions.

OBJECTIVES: The use of an extraoral scan body (ESB) for facial scanning data registration has limited clinical applications due to the need to consider variations in micro-movements in different facial regions. Developing ESB-free registration methods that utilize facial surface information may provide a valuable alternative. METHODS: The precision of an ESB-based method for 3D dummy head scanning data was evaluated using root mean square (RMS) deviation values, along with a volunteer study that assessed the precision of different facial regions after ESB-based registration. ESB-free registra

Accounting for Misclassification of Cause of Death in Weighted Cumulative Incidence Functions for Causal Analyses.

Misclassification between causes of death can produce bias in estimated cumulative incidence functions. When estimating causal quantities, such as comparing the cumulative incidence of death due to specific causes under interventions, such bias can lead to suboptimal decision making. Here, a consistent semiparametric estimator of the cumulative incidence function under interventions in settings with misclassification between two event types is presented. The measurement parameters for this estimator can be informed by validation data or expert knowledge. Moreover, a modified bootstrap approach

A re-activation model for 169Yb intensity modulated brachytherapy sources accounting for spatiotemporal isotopic composition.

BACKGROUND: Intensity modulated brachytherapy based on partially shielded intracavitary and interstitial applicators is possible with a cost-effective 169Yb production method. 169Yb is a traditionally expensive isotope suitable for this purpose, with an average γ-ray energy of 93 keV. Re-activating a single 169Yb source multiple times in a nuclear reactor between clinical uses was shown to theoretically reduce cost by approximately 75% relative to conventional single-activation sources. With re-activation, substantial spatiotemporal variation in isotopic source composition is expected between

Premature ventricular complexes after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation: Accounting for regression to the mean.

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies have indicated that the frequency of premature ventricular complexes (PVC) increases after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF). However, these studies have primarily focused on patients whose PVC burden increased rather than including the full spectrum of outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a single-center retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients who underwent first-time AF ablation from 1/2018 to 12/2022 for paroxysmal or persistent AF and had both preablation and postablation rhythm monitoring within 6 months of the procedure. Development of a framework of carbon accounting and management on the township level in China.

The regional management on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential to the success of global carbon reduction. However, previous studies mostly focused on the city or country levels, while the management of GHG emissions on the township level has not been fully studied. This study proposed a framework of carbon management on the township level and developed a calculation tool for accounting GHG emissions. The case study of Lingshan Island, located in eastern China, was conducted through a site visit and interviews. A questionnaire survey was performed to collect data for carbon accounting.

No short-term mortality from benzodiazepine use post-acute ischemic stroke after accounting for bias.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Older adults receive benzodiazepines for agitation, anxiety, and insomnia after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). No trials have been conducted to determine if benzodiazepine use affects poststroke mortality in the elderly. METHODS: We examined the association between initiating benzodiazepines within 1 week after AIS and 30-day mortality. We included patients ≥65 years, admitted for new nonsevere AIS (NIH-Stroke-Severity[NIHSS]≤ 20), 2014-2020, with no recorded benzodiazepine use in the previous 3 months and no contraindication for use. We linked a stroke registry to el

Gestational Weight Gain and Birth Outcome: A Comparison of Methods of Accounting for Gestational Age.

Cross-sectional studies of total gestational weight gain (GWG) and perinatal outcomes have used different approaches to operationalize GWG and adjust for duration of gestation. Using birth records from California (2007-2017), Nevada (2010-2017), and Oregon (2008-2017), we compared 3 commonly used approaches to estimate associations between GWG and cesarean delivery, small-for-gestational-age birth, and low birth weight (LBW): 1) the Institute of Medicine-recommended GWG ranges at a given gestational week, 2) total weight gain categories directly adjusting for gestational age as a covariate, an

Accounting for diverse evolutionary forces reveals mosaic patterns of selection on human preterm birth loci.

Currently, there is no comprehensive framework to evaluate the evolutionary forces acting on genomic regions associated with human complex traits and contextualize the relationship between evolution and molecular function. Here, we develop an approach to test for signatures of diverse evolutionary forces on trait-associated genomic regions. We apply our method to regions associated with spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB), a complex disorder of global health concern. We find that sPTB-associated regions harbor diverse evolutionary signatures including conservation, excess population differentiati

Accounting for individual differences in the response to tDCS with baseline levels of neurochemical excitability.

There is now considerable evidence that applying a small electrical current to the cerebral cortex can have wide ranging effects on cognition and performance, and may provide substantial benefit as a treatment for conditions such as depression. However, there is variability across subjects in the extent to which stimulation modulates behaviour, providing a challenge for the development of applications. Here, we employed an individual differences approach to test if baseline concentrations of the neurochemicals GABA and glutamate are associated with an individual's response to transcranial dire

Mechanical behavior of metastatic femurs through patient-specific computational models accounting for bone-metastasis interaction.

This paper proposes a computational model based on a finite-element formulation for describing the mechanical behavior of femurs affected by metastatic lesions. A novel geometric/constitutive description is introduced by modelling healthy bone and metastases via a linearly poroelastic constitutive approach. A Gaussian-shaped graded transition of material properties between healthy and metastatic tissues is prescribed, in order to account for the bone-metastasis interaction. Loading-induced failure processes are simulated by implementing a progressive damage procedure, formulated via a quasi-st
