Advances in loading-release-repair strategies of hydrogels for anterior segment disease therapy.

Anterior segment (AS) diseases are a major group of ocular disorders that impair ocular surface homeostasis, optical transparency, aqueous humor circulation, and postoperative visual quality, including Dry Eye Disease (DED), corneal injury, Infectious Keratitis (IK), uveitis, glaucoma, and Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO). The therapeutic goal of these diseases extends beyond symptom relief toward the establishment of integrated treatment systems capable of overcoming complex ocular barriers and actively regulating the pathological immune microenvironment and inflammatory cascades through

Retinal pigment epithelial detachments and tears, and progressive retinal degeneration in light chain deposition disease.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Light-chain deposition disease (LCDD) is a rare condition characterised by deposition of monoclonal immunoglobulin light chains (LCs) in tissues, resulting in varying degrees of organ dysfunction. This study reports the characteristic clinical ocular findings seen in advanced LCDD upon development of ocular fundus changes. This is the first report to describe this entity in vivo in a series of patients. METHODS: A case series of ocular fundus changes in three patients with kidney biopsy-proven LCDD. All patients underwent best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) exam, perimetry

The relative roles of the otolith organs and semicircular canals in producing space motion sickness.

Inflight and post-landing "immunity" to the "coriolis sickness susceptibility test", observed during the Skylab M131 experiment, suggests that the otolith organs play a major role in space motion sickness (SMS). This view is supported by the report that ocular counter-torsion asymmetries correlate with SMS incidence and severity. Further data indicate that sensory-motor adaptation to microgravity includes a process whereby central interpretation of otolith signals is biased from "tilt" toward translation. However, unexpected responses to linear acceleration suggest the importance of gravicepto

Visual-vestibular interaction in multiple sclerosis.

Visual modulation of the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) was analyzed in 20 patients with multiple sclerosis who had no vestibular or ocular motor symptoms. Visual suppression of the VOR was impaired in 75% of patients. VOR gains in darkness were elevated in 35% of patients. Elevated VOR gain in darkness is attributed to vestibular adaptation to defective smooth pursuit. This vestibular plasticity achieved retinal image stability by matching eye velocity to head velocity when stationary targets were viewed. The high incidence of impaired visual suppression of the VOR rivals the sensitivity of oth

Ocular manifestations in the X-linked intellectual disability syndromes.

Intellectual disability (ID), a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by limitations of both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, affects an estimated 1-2% of children. Genetic causes of ID are often accompanied by recognizable syndromal patterns. The vision apparatus is a sensory extension of the brain, and individuals with intellectual disabilities frequently have coexisting abnormalities of ocular structures and the visual pathway system. About one-third of the X-linked intellectual disability (XLID) syndromes have significant eye or ocular adnexa abnormalities that pr

[New model of artificial iris-lens diaphragm for correction of large iris defects (clinical and functional results of implantation)].

The article presents clinical and functional results of model C iris-lens diaphragm (ILD) implantation to patients with aniridia or large iris defects. Modification of the supporting elements and new grooves at their base provide better adaptation of the diaphragm to individual eye sizes and reduces the impact exert upon reactive ocular structures. The new model shows good self centration and enables sutureless implantation in patients with aniridia if lens capsule or other supporting structures of the anterior chamber are present. Owing to design changes and lesser thickness of the new diaphr

Unusual case of double anterior segment with two lenses and double cataract in a 6-month child.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior segment duplicity with two lenses is a rare event which pathogenesis is still unknown. Different ocular and systemic abnormalities might be associated with such event. CASE OBSERVATIONS: Hereby we describe a case of a 6-months female child referred to our service due to signs of ocular malformation in the left eye. The ocular exam showed a double anterior segment with twin lenses in one single eye, associated with double lamellar opacity and persistence of the two hyaloid arteries. The patient underwent surgical treatment with lensectomy and vitrectomy aiming visual sti

Molecular evidence for the role of inflammation in dry eye disease.

Ocular surface inflammation is propagated by a complex series of molecular processes and has been implicated in the pathogenesis of dry eye disease (DED), either as a causal or a downstream effect of ocular surface disease. A state of hyperosmolarity elicits an acute immune response in DED, leading to subsequent activation of the adaptive immune response. This cascade incites dysregulation of the immune system, triggering a vicious cycle of events that causes damage to the ocular surface. Symptoms associated with these events include burning, irritation, redness, photophobia and blurred vision

Acute and phase-shifting effects of ocular and extraocular light in human circadian physiology.

Light can influence physiology and performance of humans in two distinct ways. It can acutely change the level of physiological and behavioral parameters, and it can induce a phase shift in the circadian oscillators underlying variations in these levels. Until recently, both effects were thought to require retinal light perception. This view was challenged by Campbell and Murphy, who showed significant phase shifts in core body temperature and melatonin using an extraocular stimulus. Their study employed popliteal skin illumination and exclusively considered phase-shifting effects. In this pap

Pupil size correlates with near-threshold detection performance irrespective of stimulus color, eccentricity, or retinal adaptation state.

In visual near-threshold detection tasks, larger prestimulus pupil size is associated with improved accuracy. However, previous studies have used black-and-white peripherally presented stimuli, leaving open the question of whether the relationship persists when targets differ in their color or eccentricity. Here, we addressed this question with three experiments that systematically varied the lighting conditions and target properties in a visual near-threshold detection task (data collected in 2022-2024). Light conditions ranged from dark to dim to bright, with the dark condition including a p

Modeling of Retinal Degeneration.

We developed a model of retinal degeneration in rabbits based on exposure to light with a wavelength of 405 nm. This model allows reproducing structural and functional disorders in the central parts of the retina, including primarily degeneration of the outer layers of the retina (retinal pigment epithelium and layer of photoreceptor cells), and is designed to study the mechanisms of formation, progression and effectiveness of new drugs and methods of treatment of degenerative diseases of the retina.

The relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and photoprotection in young leaves of two dominant tree species in subtropical forests in different seasons.

Increasing amounts of experimental evidence show that anthocyanins provide physiological protection to plants under stress. However, the difference in photoprotection mediated by anthocyanins and other photoprotective substances in different seasons is still uncertain. To determine the relationship between anthocyanin accumulation and the photoprotective effects in different seasons, Castanopsis chinensis and Acmena acuminatissima, whose anthocyanin accumulation patterns differ in different seasons, were used as materials to explain how plants adapt to different seasons; as such, their physiol

Role of parafovea in blur perception.

The blur experienced by our visual system is not uniform across the visual field. Additionally, lens designs with variable power profile such as contact lenses used in presbyopia correction and to control myopia progression create variable blur from the fovea to the periphery. The perceptual changes associated with varying blur profile across the visual field are unclear. We therefore measured the perceived neutral focus with images of different angular subtense (from 4° to 20°) and found that the amount of blur, for which focus is perceived as neutral, increases when the stimulus was extended

The negative directional aftereffect associated with adaptation to the prismatic effects of spectacle lenses.

PURPOSE: To determine whether subjects would demonstrate a negative directional aftereffect in a sparse visual environment after being trained to point accurately through a spectacle lens. METHODS: Subjects were made myopic using a contact lens and then the myopia was corrected with a spectacle lens. Pointing behavior was used to assess directional localization. Training was carried out by showing subjects their pointing errors. RESULTS: Seven of 10 subjects demonstrated a negative directional aftereffect after spectacle lens adaptation. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of a negative directional a

Ocular dominance and the interocular suppression of blur in monovision.

Presbyopic contact lens patients with monocular corrections (monovision) see clearly at all distances by virtue of an interocular suppression of anisometropic blur that occurs regionally between corresponding retinal areas. This suppression fails to occur with small high-contrast targets viewed under low luminance conditions. The effect of target size and contrast upon interocular suppression of blur was quantified by reducing contrast of a bright test spot, viewed binocularly while wearing various plus lenses monocularly, until the out-of-focus image was suppressed. The strength of interocula
