A Novel Brain-Computer Interface Application: Precise Decoding of Urination and Defecation Motor Attempts in Spinal Cord Injury Patients.

Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) often face urinary and defecation dysfunction, and existing treatments have limited effectiveness. Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology has been shown to have positive effects on the rehabilitation of SCI patients, but its application in promoting the recovery of urinary and defecation functions has not been explored. This study proposes a new BCI application approach and develops an accurate decoding model targeted at urination and defecation motor attempt tasks. Specifically, we designed a Bidirectional Temporal Convolutional Network (UDCNN-BiTCN)

An Immersive P300 Brain-Computer Interface Based on 3D Morphological Stimuli and Self-Adaptive Bayesian Linear Discriminant Analysis.

Conventional P300-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) commonly rely on two-dimensional (2D) visual flashing, which may induce visual fatigue and limit immersion, thereby restricting long-term usability and system performance. To address these limitations, this study proposes an immersive P300-BCI framework integrating a three-dimensional morphological stimulation paradigm, termed 3D-Morph, with self-adaptive Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (SA-BLDA). Instead of using color or luminance flickering, the proposed paradigm employs dynamic 2D-to-3D morphological transformations of virtual

Predicting rehabilitation outcomes of unilateral stroke after brain-computer interface training based on magnetic resonance imaging data.

Stroke remains a significant cause of disability globally, with a noticeable prevalence in China. Post-stroke rehabilitation, particularly through brain-computer interface (BCI) methods, plays a vital role in enhancing motor function recovery. However, the efficacy of BCI rehabilitation might be hindered by challenges in individualized program of prognosis prediction. This study aimed to develop prognostic prediction models for unilateral hemiplegia after BCI rehabilitation, utilizing both clinical and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, in order to enhance treatment efficiency

Multimodal brain-computer interface for robotic control: integration of real-time gaze tracking and EEG-based motor imagery.

Individuals with upper limb dysfunction face significant challenges in performing everyday tasks, often depending on healthcare professionals, caregivers, or family members. Such reliance places a continuous burden on helpers who must remain available for assistance. To address these challenges, this study investigated a virtual hybrid brain-computer interface (BCI) system that integrates gaze tracking with motor imagery (MI) to control a robotic arm, potentially reducing the dependency on human support. Twenty healthy, right-handed participants took part in a virtual game environment where th

A role for preparatory midfrontal theta in autism as revealed by a high executive load brain-computer interface reverse spelling task.

Midfrontal theta oscillations have been linked to executive function, yet their role in autism-where this function is often compromised-remains unclear. We hypothesized that preparatory increases in theta power may help normalize performance in autism. To test this, we used a challenging interactive executive function task designed to impose a high working memory load and require constant error monitoring. An electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-computer interface (BCI) was used to maximize cognitive load and engagement. Neural activity from autistic and non-autistic adults was compared whil

Effect of Brain Computer Interface Training on Frontoparietal Network Function for Young People: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

AIMS: Inattention in young people is one of the main reasons for their declining learning ability. Frontoparietal networks (FPNs) are associated with attention and executive function. Brain computer interface (BCI) training has been applied in neurorehabilitation, but there is a lack of research on its application to cognition. This study aimed to investigate the effect of BCI on the attention network in healthy young adults. METHODS: Twenty-seven healthy people performed BCI training for 5 consecutive days. An attention network test (ANT) was performed at baseline and immediately after the f

Transcranial focused ultrasound to V5 enhances human visual motion brain-computer interface by modulating feature-based attention.

A brain-computer interface (BCI) enables users to control devices with their minds. Despite advancements, non-invasive BCIs still exhibit high error rates, prompting investigation into the potential reduction through concurrent targeted neuromodulation. Transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) is an emerging non-invasive neuromodulation technology with high spatiotemporal precision. This study examines whether tFUS neuromodulation can improve BCI outcomes, and explores the underlying mechanism of action using high-density electroencephalography (EEG) source imaging (ESI). As a result, V5-targete

Evidence of neuroplasticity with brain-computer interface in a randomized trial for post-stroke rehabilitation: a graph-theoretic study of subnetwork analysis.

BACKGROUND: Brain-computer interface (BCI) has been widely used for functional recovery after stroke. Understanding the brain mechanisms following BCI intervention to optimize BCI strategies is crucial for the benefit of stroke patients. METHODS: Forty-six patients with upper limb motor dysfunction after stroke were recruited and randomly divided into the control group or the BCI group. The primary outcome was measured by the assessment of Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Upper Extremity (FMA-UE). Meanwhile, we performed resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) in all patients, f

Real-time EEG-based brain-computer interface to a virtual avatar enhances cortical involvement in human treadmill walking.

Recent advances in non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies have shown the feasibility of neural decoding for both users' gait intent and continuous kinematics. However, the dynamics of cortical involvement in human upright walking with a closed-loop BCI has not been investigated. This study aims to investigate the changes of cortical involvement in human treadmill walking with and without BCI control of a walking avatar. Source localization revealed significant differences in cortical network activity between walking with and without closed-loop BCI control. Our results showed

Improving the performance of an EEG-based motor imagery brain computer interface using task evoked changes in pupil diameter.

For individuals with high degrees of motor disability or locked-in syndrome, it is impractical or impossible to use mechanical switches to interact with electronic devices. Brain computer interfaces (BCIs) can use motor imagery to detect interaction intention from users but lack the accuracy of mechanical switches. Hence, there exists a strong need to improve the accuracy of EEG-based motor imagery BCIs attempting to implement an on/off switch. Here, we investigate how monitoring the pupil diameter of a person as a psycho-physiological parameter in addition to traditional EEG channels can impr

Which physiological components are more suitable for visual ERP based brain-computer interface? A preliminary MEG/EEG study.

We investigated which evoked response component occurring in the first 800 ms after stimulus presentation was most suitable to be used in a classical P300-based brain-computer interface speller protocol. Data was acquired from 275 Magnetoencephalographic sensors in two subjects and from 61 Electroencephalographic sensors in four. To better characterize the evoked physiological responses and minimize the effect of response overlap, a 1000 ms Inter Stimulus Interval was preferred to the short (<400 ms) trial length traditionally used in this class of BCIs. To investigate which scalp regions conv

EEG-based brain-computer interface with immersive virtual reality for phantom limb pain: a single-center pilot neurofeedback trial.

BACKGROUND: Phantom limb pain (PLP) is a challenging neuropathic pain condition following limb amputation or brachial plexus injury. Non-pharmacological interventions such as motor imagery training, phantom motor execution and mirror therapy have shown potential to alleviate PLP by engaging sensorimotor circuits, but their effects are debated. We developed GHOST, a portable EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) coupled with immersive virtual reality (VR), allowing patients to control a virtual limb via motor imagery in real time, as a neurofeedback-based rehabilitation tool. Magnetic NeuroRing: a portable adaptive brain-computer interface for real-time transcranial magnetic stimulation in post-stroke motor rehabilitation.

Stroke often causes persistent upper limb and hand motor dysfunction due to disrupted neural reorganization. To address this, we developed the Magnetic NeuroRing: a portable brain-computer interface integrating real-time electroencephalogram (EEG) with closed-loop continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) for adaptive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). A multi-channel EEG array over motor cortical regions (FC3, FC4, CP3, CP4, FT7, FT8, TP7, TP8) detects event-related desynchronization (ERD), indicating motor intent.
