The results of clinical observations on 34 patients with toxoplasmosis affecting mainly eyes over the period of 2-6 years are presented. During a series of pathology surveys in four production complexes of a U.S. broiler integrator, the technical services veterinarians of an animal health company noted a high incidence of severe gizzard erosions and ulcerations (GEU), prompting further clinical investigation and a battery trial. No growth-promoting antibiotics or ionophore coccidiostats were used during the period of these surveys. All used tribasic copper chloride (TBCC) at ≤120 ppm added copper in broiler rations. A long-term follow up was begun in 1982 on offspring of mothers who acquired toxoplasmosis during gestation. Even today, toxoplasmosis infection during pregnancy is an unsolved problem. In studies of 2206 pregnant women, toxoplasmosis specific IgM-antibodies have been detected in 69 cases (3.1%). The preventive and therapeutic efficacy of halofuginone-lactate (HFL) against Cryptosporidium parvum was evaluated in a study conducted from November 2004 to March 2005 on a dairy farm in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic, using 260 spontaneously infected calves. The protozoan parasite Cryptosporidium parvum (Cp) causes diarrhea that can be acutely severe in immunocompetent persons and can become chronic and life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals.
