DFT study on the mechanism of methanol dehydrogenation over RuxPy surfaces.

Methanol dehydrogenation (MD) is highly valuable in hydrogen energy production, and the introduction of nonmetals has received much attention to improve the activity and stability of the MD catalysts, but the understanding of the role of non-metallic elements in catalyzing the MD reaction is rather limited. Density functional theory (DFT) is employed to investigate the mechanism of methanol dehydrogenation on RuxPy surfaces. In this work, the P element is introduced into the Ru-based catalyst to obtain dispersed Ru sites and RuxPy (x/y = 2 : 1, 1 : 1, and 1 : 2) catalysts are designed. CH3OH a

Recent Progress on the Involvement of Formaldehyde in the Methanol-To-Hydrocarbons Reaction.

This review summarized the recent research progress on the crucial role of formaldehyde during the methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) reaction. As a reaction intermediate, formaldehyde participates in the formation of carbon-carbon, the establish of dual-cycle, and the coking process of MTH reaction. Different techniques for formaldehyde detection in the study of MTH are also introduced. The conversion of methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) over zeolite catalysts has been the subject of intense research since its discovery. Great effort has been devoted to the investigation of four key topics: the initi

Enhanced electrochemical-activation of H2O2 to produce •OH by regulating the adsorption of H2O2 on nitrogen-doped porous carbon for organic pollutants removal.

The heterogeneous Fenton oxidation is regarded as a promising technology for refractory organic pollutants removal relying on highly active •OH generated via the decomposition of H2O2 catalyzed by iron-based catalyst that overcomes the issues of pH limitation and iron sludge discharge encountered in conventional Fenton reaction. However, the efficiency of •OH production in heterogeneous Fenton remains low as the limited mass transfer between H2O2 and catalysts caused by the poor H2O2 adsorption. Here, a nitrogen-doped porous carbon (NPC) catalyst with tunable N configuration was prepared for e

Size-dependent catalytic hydrogen production via methane decomposition and aromatization at a low-temperature using Co, Ni, Cu, Mo, and Ru nanometals.

Catalysts of methane decomposition to hydrogen and aromatization are inevitable for the development of natural gas applications. Metal catalysts have been developed to achieve highly efficient methane decomposition and aromatization under 1000 K using various substrates, such as zeolites and silica. Here, we performed a consecutive study on methane decomposition using Co-, Ni-, Cu-, Mo-, and Ru-based nanocatalysts in the bulk, on a SiO2 substrate, and in mesoporous SiO2. The crystallite sizes of the bulk nanocatalysts, and nanocatalysts on nonporous and mesoporous SiO2 were controlled to 80-85

The separation characteristics and performance evaluation of the silica-based poly(pentabromostyrene) stationary phase in capillary electrochromatography.

A mixed-mode capillary column packed with silica-based poly(pentabromostyrene) particles (denoted as SiO2@pPBS) was prepared and applied to capillary electrochromatography (CEC) separation. With the presence of benzene rings and bromine atoms in polymer chains, the SiO2@pPBS column provides a reversed-phase/hydrophilic mixed-mode retention mechanism owing to hydrophilic, hydrophobic and π-π interactions between the stationary phase and various analytes, including alkylbenzenes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nucleosides, phenols and anilines. In CEC mode, the separation behavior of charged

Interfacial Oxide Engineering of TiN Antenna-Reactor for Durable Photothermal Dry Reforming of Methane.

Plasmonic TiN antenna-reactor platforms are attractive for solar dry reforming of methane, yet oxidative reconstruction of TiN in CO2-containing atmospheres undermines durability by weakening metal-support interactions and triggering nanoparticle sintering. Here, we propose a surface-oxide engineering strategy that inserts a conformal crystalline TiO2 interlayer between the TiN core and highly dispersed Ru clusters. The TiO2 interlayer stabilizes TiN, anchors subnanometric Ru clusters, and concurrently enables directional carrier delivery to Ru and photothermal heat confinement near the surfac

Emission characteristics of benzene series in FCC flue gas.

Benzene series are considered as air pollutants in refineries. However, the emissions of benzene series in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) flue gas are poorly understand. In this work, we conduct stack tests on three typical FCC units. Benzene series, including benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene, are monitored in the flue gas. It shows that the coking degree of the spent catalysts affect the emissions of benzene series significantly, and there are four kinds of carbon-containing precursors in the spent catalyst. A fixed-bed reactor is used to conduct the regeneration simulation experime

Permanganate oxidation of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs and polar PACs): column experiments with DNAPL at residual saturation.

Permanganate is an oxidant usually applied for in situ soil remediation due to its persistence underground. It has already shown great efficiency for dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) degradation under batch experiment conditions. In the present study, experimental permanganate oxidation of a DNAPL - coal tar - sampled in the groundwater of a former coking plant was carried out in a glass bead column. Several glass bead columns were spiked with coal tar using the drainage-imbibition method to mimic on-site pollution spread at residual saturation as best as possible. The leaching of organic

2-naphthylamine toxicity.

In the past, 2-naphthylamine (2-NA) was used for the production of azo dyes, as an antioxidant in the cable industry and in the rubber industry. Despite the fact that 2-NA is not produced on an industrial scale, it is still used in small quantities as a model bladder carcinogen in laboratories, and also for sewage control, water analysis and oxytocinase assays. In addition, it is detected in the air in coke ovens, where it is formed as one of the pyrolysis products. The main aim of this work is to provide an actual literature review for health risk assessments related to 2-NA which is still us

A review on remediation of cyanide containing industrial wastes using biological systems with special reference to enzymatic degradation.

Cyanide is a nitrile which is used extensively in many industries like jewelry, mining, electroplating, plastics, dyes, paints, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and coal coking. Cyanides pose a serious health hazard due to their high affinity towards metals and cause malfunction of cellular respiration by inhibition of cytochrome c oxidase. This inhibition ultimately leads to histotoxic hypoxia, increased acidosis, reduced the functioning of the central nervous system and myocardial activity. Different physicochemical processes including oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, alkaline chlorination,

Transforming waste into resources: Pyrometallurgical recovery of copper and zinc from spent CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts.

CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts are designed to produce methanol through low-temperature synthesis gas conversion. Coke deposition and spinel structure formation resulting from interactions between metal oxides and alumina lead to catalyst deactivation. This study investigated the thermal treatment of spent CuO-ZnO-Al2O3 catalysts, with emphasis on metal recovery and by-product characterization. The proposed method enables effective recovery and separation of metallic copper and zinc, while the residual solid, zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4), could be reused for various applications (optical coatings, photoc

CoOx/Silicalite-1 Tailored by Calcining Atmosphere for Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane With CO2.

The relatively richer reservoir and reasonable performance in activating C─H bonds make cobalt a very competitive catalyst for the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO2-ODP). However, the catalytic nature of different cobalt species is ambiguous, and the development of active and selective Co-based CO2-ODP catalysts are at the very early stage. In this study, Co species on CoOx/Silicalite-1 catalysts are regulated by calcining the catalyst precursor at 500°C under Ar, Air, and H2 atmospheres, respectively. Characterization results reveal that the proportion of Co3O4 spi

An Active and Robust Catalytic Architecture of NiCo/GaN Nanowires for Light-Driven Hydrogen Production from Methanol.

On-site hydrogen production from liquid organic hydrogen carriers e.g., methanol provides an emerging strategy for the safe storage and transportation of hydrogen. Herein, a catalytic architecture consisting of nickel-cobalt nanoclusters dispersed on gallium nitride nanowires supported by silicon for light-driven hydrogen production from methanol is reported. By correlative microscopic, spectroscopic characterizations, and density functional theory calculations, it is revealed that NiCo nanoclusters work in synergy with GaN nanowires to enable the achievement of a significantly reduced activat

Research on the Stability and Response of Food Packaging Polystyrene Resin Materials to γ-ray Irradiation.

Radiation stability of food packaging materials is the key to ensuring food quality. In this study, 60Co γ-ray was selected to investigate the radiation resistance of food packaging polystyrene (PS) resin material, although the FTIR analysis showed that the intensity of several peaks decreased slightly. The gel permeation chromatography (GPC) results displayed that the value of peak molecular weight (Mp) of PS went from 2.68 × 105 g/mol down to 2.22 × 105 g/mol. Moreover, the residual mass (Res) of PS increased from 7.208 to 30.23%, indicating that the tendency of coking of PS was stronger aft

Synergy Between Photon-to-Phonon Pathway and Active Lattice Oxygen Enables Efficient and Stable Syngas Synthesis.

Light-driven dry reforming of methane (DRM) offers a promising route for syngas synthesis while simultaneously mitigating greenhouse gas emissions of CO2 and CH4. However, the attractive mild-temperature operating window imposes kinetic constraints on C─H/C═O activation and promotes thermodynamic tendencies for coke formation, resulting in limited efficiency and stability. Herein, manganese oxide (MnOx) is employed as a multifunctional support to integrate the classic Rh catalytic center, establishing a new benchmark photothermo catalyst for DRM. The system achieves record-high syngas producti

Breaking the Activity-Stability Trade-Off in Dry Reforming of Methane via Heteroenergetic Support Engineering.

Nickel-based catalysts are promising for dry reforming of methane (DRM) owing to their high C─H bond activation ability and low cost, while highly susceptible to coke deposition and sintering. Here, we report a heteroenergetic Ce0.75Ti0.25O2-x support that simultaneously regulates Ni nanoparticle stabilization, DRM activity, and oxygen-mediated carbon removal. Neural-network-based molecular dynamics (NN-MD) simulations and electron microscopy show that partial Ti substitution in CeO2 transforms the strong Ni-CeO2 interaction and weak Ni-TiO2 interaction into an intermediate wetting regime with

Ti3+-O Acid-Base Pairs for Efficient Solar-Driven Photothermal Nonoxidative Ethane Dehydrogenation.

Nonoxidative ethane dehydrogenation (NOEDH) is a carbon efficient but thermodynamically severe route for ethene production. Solar-driven NOEDH offers a promising alternative, yet achieving both high activity and high ethene selectivity over noble metal-free catalysts without external heating remains unresolved. Here, we reported that Ti3+-O acid-base pairs on reduced rutile TiO2 enabled highly efficient full-spectrum solar-driven photothermal NOEDH without any external heating. The optimally reduced TiO2 at 750 °C delivered an ethene production rate of 392.0 mmol g-1 h-1, which was 1107 times

Identifying priority pollutant sources: apportioning air toxics risks using positive matrix factorization.

Hazardous air pollutants or air toxics are pollutants that are known or suspected to cause serious health effects. This paper presents a methodology to quantify source contributions to air toxics health risks. First, a linear, no-threshold risk model was used to identify gas-phase organic air toxics that contribute significantly to cancer risks. Next, Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) was performed on high time-resolved measurements of these air toxics, and the additive cancer risks associated with each factor was determined. Finally, the PMF factors were linked to sources and source classes
