A Novel Image Inpainting Approach for Geometric Calibration of Low-Cost Handheld Thermal Cameras.

This paper presents an integrated calibration framework for consumer thermal cameras whose firmware-embedded display overlays cause failure of conventional corner detection algorithms. The approach combines Navier-Stokes image inpainting for automated overlay removal with UV-printed emissivity contrast targets fabricated on aluminium composite substrates. Under controlled masking of overlay-free imagery, restoration recovers 98.4% of checkerboard corners to within 0.048 px of their ground truth positions, while corners falling within the restored region carry a mean localisation error of 3.34

Research on a lightweight model for laser-cut diamond defect detection based on multi-module collaborative optimization.

As a high-end abrasive material, diamond is prone to defects such as cracks and ablation during laser cutting due to complex physical interactions. Achieving efficient and accurate detection of laser-cut diamond defects is crucial for enhancing product quality and production efficiency. Traditional deep learning object detection algorithms generally face challenges like large parameter magnitudes and heavy computational burdens, making them difficult to apply in potential scenarios of resource-restricted equipment such as handheld inspection devices. In response to this problem, this research

Thicker peripapillary choroid may be associated with behavioral factors in Tokyo's children.

The study goals were measurement of the choroidal thickness (CT) and investigation of related factors among children. Third-grade students at an elementary school in Tokyo participated in this study. A total of 119 schoolchildren underwent measurements of the axial length (AL), non-cycloplegic objective refraction (SE), and CT. The CT was divided into nine regions: the subfoveal area with a diameter of 1 mm (C0), a 5-mm-diameter circle-C0 (C1), and a 9-mm-diameter circle (C2); each was further divided into four quadrants. The SE, AL, and C0 CT were, respectively, - 1.57 ± 1.56 diopters, 23.39

Towards transforming malaria vector surveillance using VectorBrain: a novel convolutional neural network for mosquito species, sex, and abdomen status identifications.

Malaria is a major public health concern, causing significant morbidity and mortality globally. Monitoring the local population density and diversity of the vectors transmitting malaria is critical to implementing targeted control strategies. However, the current manual identification of mosquitoes is a time-consuming and intensive task, posing challenges in low-resource areas like sub-Saharan Africa; in addition, existing automated identification methods lack scalability, mobile deployability, and field-test validity. To address these bottlenecks, a mosquito image database with fresh wild-cau

Automated Implementation of the Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) Using OpenPose and Handheld Smartphone Video.

Recent advancements in computing and artificial intelligence (AI) make it possible to quantitatively evaluate human movement using digital video, thereby opening the possibility of more accessible gait analysis. The Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) is an effective tool for observational gait analysis, but human scoring of videos can take over 20 min and requires experienced observers. This research developed an algorithmic implementation of the EVGS from handheld smartphone video to enable automatic scoring. Participant walking was video recorded at 60 Hz using a smartphone, and body keypoin

Free serratus anterior artery perforator flap: a case report with an anatomic and radiological study.

Perforator flaps have become very popular in reconstructive surgery. The thoracodorsal and lateral thoracic artery perforator flaps are highly studied, and successful clinical series have been reported, whereas the literature concerning the lateral intercostal and serratus anterior artery perforator flaps is quite poor and their vascular anatomy needs yet to be clarified. We describe a case of free serratus anterior artery perforator flap for the reconstruction of a dorsal defect of the foot, followed by an anatomic and radiological study. A 17-year-old boy reported a fracture of the first and

Momentary affective states surrounding sexual intercourse in depressed adolescents and young adults.

Depressed young people may have sexual intercourse (sex) to regulate their disordered affective states. This study sought to determine how momentary positive and negative affect relate to subsequent sex events in depressed adolescents and young adults. Fifty-four outpatients (87% female) 15-22 years who reported clinically significant depressive symptoms and having sex at least once a week completed a baseline survey, then reported momentary affective states and the occurrence of sex events on a handheld computer in response to 4-6 random signals per day for 2 weeks. Participants identified 38

Use of Electronic Tablets for Patient Education on Flushing Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters.

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of using an electronic tablet to provide patient education for flushing peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) as a way to reduce the incidence of occlusion. Eleven patients, newly diagnosed with cancer, participated in a pilot study that used a video on PICC flushing and remote coaching using FaceTime (Apple, Cupertino, CA) to teach patients how to maintain their PICCs in their homes. At the end of the 6-week intervention, no adverse outcomes (occlusions or infections) were noted among the patients who participated in the study.

Soft Robotics and Advanced Technologies for Minimally Invasive Bioprinting: The Future of Internal Organ Repair.

Bioprinting, first proposed in the 1980s for ex vivo tissue fabrication, has evolved into a cornerstone of regenerative medicine. Conventional approaches rely on printing tissues outside the body for later implantation but are limited by geometric mismatch, construct fragility, and invasive surgery. In situ bioprinting addresses these limitations by depositing cells and biomaterials directly at defect sites, enabling patient-specific repair and improved tissue integration. Building on this paradigm, Minimally Invasive Bioprinting (MIB) targets internal organ regeneration through small incision

Using computed tomography, photogrammetry & structured light scanning for measuring human mandibles: a comparison of metric analysis using various 3D imaging technologies.

This paper aims to determine if photogrammetry and/or structured light scanning (SLS) can be used as alternatives for conducting metric assessments on mandibles as opposed to computed tomography (CT). Identifying alternative imaging options to CT is important as, although CT is accurate and reliable, there are multiple limitations that impact its accessibility, including cost, portability, and ease of learning. Photogrammetry and SLS are two handheld, lightweight, cost-effective alternatives that are relatively user friendly. Therefore, this paper imaged 33 human mandibles using CT, photogramm

Comparison of GFAP and UCH-L1 Measurements Using Two Automated Immunoassays (i-STAT® and Alinity®) for the Management of Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Preliminary Results from a French Single-Center Approach.

The measurement of blood glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) may assist in the management of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This study aims to compare GFAP and UCH-L1 values measured using a handheld device with those measured using a core laboratory platform. We enrolled 230 mTBI patients at intermediate risk of complications. Following French guidelines, a negative S100B value permits the patient to be discharged without a computed tomography scan. Plasma GFAP and UCH-L1 levels were retrospectively measured using i-STAT® and Alinit

Surface kinematic and depth-resolved analysis of human vocal folds in vivo during phonation using optical coherence tomography.

SIGNIFICANCE: The human vocal fold (VF) oscillates in multiple vectors and consists of distinct layers with varying viscoelastic properties that contribute to the mucosal wave. Office-based and operative laryngeal endoscopy are limited to diagnostic evaluation of the VF epithelial surface only and are restricted to axial-plane characterization of the horizontal mucosal wave. As such, understanding of the biomechanics of human VF motion remains limited. AIM: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a micrometer-resolution, high-speed endoscopic imaging modality which acquires cross-sectional imag
