A network analysis of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and their comorbidity with other disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To improve our understanding of the heterogeneity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and its comorbidity with other disorders by using network analysis. METHODS: An existing data base of 257 participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD and whose symptoms were evaluated using the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) was subjected to network analysis. RESULTS: The analysis revealed eight clusters of characteristics. Two clusters were too small in numbers to reach any meaningful conclusion. The other six clusters included patients with: 1) contamination and cleaning sy

Anxious attachment and excessive acquisition: The mediating roles of anthropomorphism and distress intolerance.

Background and aims Most individuals with hoarding disorder (HD) are prone to excessively acquiring new possessions. Understanding the factors that contribute to this collecting behavior will allow us to develop better treatment approaches for HD. The aim of this study was to test our assumption that an anxious attachment style is associated with a tendency to anthropomorphize comforting objects and an inability to tolerate distress, which in turn leads to excessive acquisition. Methods A total of 361 participants with subclinical to clinical acquisition problems (77.8% female) completed a ser

Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Elderly Parkinson Disease Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical picture of obsessive-compulsive disorder encompasses a broad range of symptoms that are related to multiple psychological domains, including perception, cognition, emotion, and social relatedness. As obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) frequently have an early onset, there are limited data about OCS in older populations (≥65 years) and, in particular, in elderly subjects with Parkinson disease (PD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of OCS using a self-report measure (Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised) and to identify associated sociodemograp

Identity processes and clusters in individuals with and without pathological buying.

The present study investigated the association between pathological buying (PB) and identity processes and clusters. Forty-one patients with PB and 41 gender/age-matched controls (73% females) filled out the Dimensions of Identity Development Scale (DIDS), the Pathological Buying Screener, and self-report questionnaires to assess comorbid psychopathology, such as depressive symptoms, pathological internet shopping, and hoarding (excluding acquisition). Patients with PB reported significantly higher scores on ruminative exploration and lower scores on identity commitment processes compared to h

Relationships between neuropsychological variables and factor-analysed symptom dimensions in obsessive compulsive disorder.

Despite mounting evidence for the distinctiveness of symptom dimensions in obsessive-compulsive disorder, neuropsychological studies have been few, focused on small samples, and relying on classification of participants based on mutually exclusive symptom categories, resulting in lack of concordance across neuropsychological and imaging studies. Neuropsychological assessment was undertaken with 150 individuals with DSM IV OCD, and neuropsychological variables were analysed in relation to symptom dimension scores derived from factor analysis. Five dimensions were derived from principal componen

RFamide-related Peptide-3 and the Trade-off between Reproductive and Ingestive Behavior.

Ingestive and sex behaviors are important for individual survival and reproductive success, but when environmental energy availability is limited, individuals of many different species make a trade-off, forfeiting sex for ingestive behavior. For example, food-deprived female Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) forego vaginal scent marking and lordosis (sex behaviors) in favor of foraging, hoarding, and eating food (ingestive behavior). Reproductive processes tend to be energetically costly, and individual survival requires homeostasis in metabolic energy. Thus, during energetic challenges,

Assessing obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a subclinical and clinical sample: the development of the Hungarian version of the OCI-R.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is around 1-2% in the population. Questionnaires, such as the OCI-R, are a useful tool in the diagnositc process. The purpose of this study was to develop the Hungarian version of the OCI-R, examine its validity and reliability, and its ability to differentiate between clinical and subclinical OCD. METHODS: Confirmatiory factor analysis was carried out on the subclinical sample (N = 4301). Reliability analysis was carried out on both samples, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the two samples. RESULTS: The si

Obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions: Association with comorbidity profiles and cognitive-behavioral therapy outcome in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Our aims were to examine: (1) classes of comorbid disorders in a sample of children and adolescents with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), (2) how these classes relate to obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions, and (3) the extent to which obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions predict Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) outcome. Participants (N = 269) were assessed with the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (K-SADS-PL) and the Children's Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (CY-BOCS). Latent Class Analysis (LCA) was used to identify comorbidity classes. Regression

Neural correlates of overvaluation and the effort to save possessions in a novel decision task: An exploratory fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: People exhibit a strong attachment to possessions, observed in behavioral economics through loss aversion using new items in the Endowment or IKEA effects and in clinical psychology through pathological trouble discarding domestic items in Hoarding Disorder. These fields rarely intersect, but both document a reticence to relinquish a possessed item, even at a cost, which is associated with feelings of loss but can include enhanced positive states as well. METHODS: To demonstrate the shared properties of these loss-related ownership effects, we developed the Pretzel Decorating Ta

The OCI-CV-R: A Revision of the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory - Child Version.

BACKGROUND: The Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Children's Version (OCI-CV) was developed to assess obsessive-compulsive symptoms in youth. Recent changes in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) exclude hoarding from inclusion in the diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Accordingly, the present study examined the reliability, validity, factorial structure, and diagnostic sensitivity of a revised version of the scale - the OCI-CV-R- that excludes items assessing hoarding. METHODS: Participant were 1047 youth, including 489 meeting DSM criteria for primary OCD, 298 clinical

Specificity and structure of obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms.

Research in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) shows heterogeneous symptoms. No longer satisfied with categorizations of obsessions or compulsions, contemporary symptom measures are multidimensional and assess specific symptoms (e.g., checking, washing) as well as experiences bearing a putative relation to OCD (e.g., hoarding). This two-study correlational design examined three OCD measures in student samples (total N=805). Objectives were to evaluate (a) the measures' joint factor structure; (b) specificity of relations between OCD and symptoms of general distress, panic, and depression; and

Perianal cellulitis. Cutaneous group A streptococcal disease.

Five case reports of perianal cellulitis caused by group A beta-hemolytic streptococci are presented. These reports illustrate delays in diagnosis and therapy of this condition that may present as chronic diaper dermatitis, perirectal fissures, painful defecation, fecal hoarding behavior, or proctocolitis. One patient had associated guttate psoriasis. In children especially, guttate psoriasis should alert physicians to culture perirectal as well as pharyngeal sites for group A streptococci.

Predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the childhood clinical predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to assess whether dimensional subtypes of OCD and the presence of comorbid tic symptoms influence long-term outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study in which 45 of 62 eligible children with OCD were reassessed an average of 9 years later, in early adulthood. Main outcome measures included expert-rated, obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom severity and time to remission of OC symptoms. Baseline clinical characteri

Object attachment and decision-making.

The perceived value of our possessions extends well beyond their monetary worth or utility. Many possessions produce abiding attachments and contain deep conceptual meanings, which strongly influence our drive to acquire, retain, or relinquish them. In both the endowment effect and hoarding disorder (HD) research had focused on the degree that a fear of loss produces overvaluation by owners. There is evidence for this at both the behavioral and neural level, for example with self-reported negative emotions and activation in the insula and anterior cingulate cortex when one struggles to relinqu

Object attachment as we grow older.

Extreme object attachment in adults can form as a way to compensate for a lack of interpersonal attachment or as a symptom of hoarding disorder; however, normative levels of object attachment also exist across the lifespan. Although the importance of secure interpersonal attachment as a protective factor for older adults has been well established, research into object attachment in older adults is still a nascent field. As individuals age, they inevitably experience a series of cognitive, emotional, and physical changes that may influence their attachment to objects. Life events may impact the

Obsessional slowness in obsessive-compulsive disorder: identifying characteristics and comorbidities in a clinical sample.

BACKGROUND: Obsessional slowness (OS) is characterised by debilitating motor slowness during initiation and completion of daily tasks such as washing, dressing, eating or walking. Yet, the clinical features of OS are still poorly understood. METHODS: This study aimed to delineate demographics, comorbid disorders and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) associated with OS. Cross sectional data from 667 OCD outpatients aged 9-82 years (M = 37.86, SD = 12.78) who underwent comprehensive standardised assessments administered by trained clinicians were analysed. Participants with (n = 189) and with

THE RELATIONSHIP OF OBSESSIONS AND COMPULSIONS WITH AGGRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder that is frequently encountered in the clinic and affects the functionality of patients significantly. Patients with higher levels of aggression have lower treatment compliance and recovery rates for their current mental illnesses. In our study, the relationships between OCD and its subtypes and aggression were examined. A total of 87 patients with OCD were included in the study. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) were applied to the patients. In this study, the relationship

Recovering from anorexia nervosa by machine.

Any healthy person can develop anorexia nervosa. Prolonged dieting causes reversible endocrine changes that emerge to combat starvation, the main threat to survival. Animals have evolved to develop strategies to cope with this challenge, assisted by hormonal systems that facilitate food hoarding but which can also inhibit eating, reinforcing the anorexic state. However, a simple machine that provides feedback on how to eat can allow patients to escape from anorexia and restore their health.
