Anorectal volume-pressure relations, contraction work, and flow during defecation.

Fecobionics is an integrated device that has shown promise for assessment of anorectal function. We used a wireless Fecobionics prototype to visualize defecatory patterns and to compute volume-pressure, contraction work, and flow. Twelve normal subjects were studied. The probe was 10 cm-long and contained pressure sensors and electrodes for impedance planimetry. Pressures, diameters, and volume data during defecation were analyzed. The bag was distended inside rectum to the urge-to-defecate level where after the subjects were asked to evacuate. The contraction work and defecatory flow were com

Evidence that ageing does not influence the uniformity of the muscle-tendon unit adaptation in master sprinters.

Differences in the adaptation processes between muscle and tendon in response to mechanical loading can lead to non-uniform mechanical properties within the muscle-tendon unit (MTU), potentially increasing injury risk. The current study analysed the mechanical properties of the triceps surae (TS) MTU in 10 young (YS; 22 ± 3 yrs) and 10 older (OS; age 65 ± 8 yrs; i.e. master) (inter)national level sprinters and 11 young recreationally active adults (YC; 23 ± 3 yrs) to detect possible non-uniformities in muscle and tendon adaptation due to habitual mechanical loading and ageing. High-Density Surface Electromyogram-based Biometrics for Personal Identification.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG) has been widely applied in neurorehabilitation techniques such as human-machine interface (HMI). The individual difference of sEMG characteristics has long been a challenge for multi-user HMI. However, the individually unique sEMG property indicates its high potential as a biometrics modality. In this work, we propose a novel application of high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG) for personal identification. HD-sEMG can decode the high-resolution spatial patterns of muscle activations, besides the widely studied temporal features, thus providing more sufficient information. W

Effects of Knee Joint Angle and Contraction Intensity on the Triceps Surae Stiffness.

Purpose: Monitoring the contractility of muscles assists the clinician in understanding how muscle functions as part of the kinetic system. This study investigated the effect of knee joint angles under different resistance on the stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius (MG), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), and soleus (SOL) muscles using the shear wave elastography (SWE) technique. Methods: A total of 22 females were recruited. During isometric plantar flexion, at knee 0-degree (fully extended) and knee 90-degree (flexed 90°), the shear modulus on the MG, LG, and SOL was measured by shear wave elasto

Unilateral lower limb suspension affects motor unit action potential train characteristics in a size-dependent manner during high force isometric knee extension.

Unilateral lower limb suspension (ULLS) mimics spaceflight-induced decreases in voluntary muscle strength and muscle recruitment. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of short-term ULLS on quadriceps motor unit action potential train (MUAPT) characteristics during high-intensity isometric contractions. Thirteen healthy adults (7 women and 6 men; age: 18-44 yr) completed bilateral knee extension assessments, including maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), interpolated twitch, and trapezoidal ramp contractions, before and after 13-day ULLS. Surface electromyography (sEMG

Physiological alterations of motor units in hemiplegia.

Isometric contractions of single motor units in the first dorsal interosseous muscle were recorded with an intramuscular microstimulation technique in patients with short- or long-term hemiplegia and compared with controls. In the hemiplegic patients motor units could be classified as in controls, utilizing twitch contraction time and fatigue sensitivity, as FF (fast fatigable), FR (fast fatigue resistant) and S (slow fatigable). The mean twitch contraction time of fast-twitch but not slow-twitch units was slightly prolonged in patients with spastic hemiplegia and motor units, especially type

The effects of ruthenium red, an inhibitor of calcium-induced calcium release, on phasic myometrial contractions.

Ruthenium red inhibits calcium-induced calcium release from the ryanodine-sensitive intracellular calcium stores; this study sought to evaluate the effects of ruthenium red on agonist-stimulated phasic myometrial contractions. Ruthenium red was found to significantly inhibit in vitro isometric contractions stimulated in response to oxytocin, prostaglandin F2 alpha, aluminum fluoride, potassium chloride, ionomycin, and Bay K 8644. These observations provide support for the hypothesis that calcium-induced calcium release from ryanodine-sensitive calcium stores is an important event during agonis

The shear modulus of the vastus lateralis muscle does not follow the passive residual torque enhancement in the knee extensors.

In vitro experiments define passive force enhancement as the increase in steady-state passive force following the deactivation of an actively stretched muscle, in contrast to a purely passive stretch. This phenomenon, linked to residual force enhancement, is also observed in voluntarily contracted muscles as passive residual torque enhancement (RTEpass). While mechanisms remain unclear, titin stiffness likey plays a key role. Supersonic shear wave elastography (SSI) estimates tissue stiffness via the shear modulus (μ). The study aimed to assess whether RTEpass of the knee extensor muscles is a

Isometric exercise for an individual with hemophilic arthropathy.

Several authors have described nonsurgical rehabilitative techniques for individuals with hemophilia who have single or recurrent hemarthroses. The effects of these low intensity exercise programs are not stated clearly in the literature. In this single-case experimental study, we investigated the effects of a training program of isometric exercise of at least two thirds of maximum voluntary contraction on the knee joint and surrounding muscles of a patient with hemophilia. A 12-year-old subject with severe factor-VIII deficiency and chronic knee arthroses was seen for baseline measurements, t

Effects of Different Isometric Training Programs on Muscle Size and Function in the Elbow Flexors.

It remains unknown whether a regimen of a combination of high- and low-intensity resistance training increases muscle size and maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) simultaneously. This study aimed to clarify the effect of the combination of high- and low-intensity resistance training on muscle size and neuromuscular function in the elbow flexors. Sixteen male adults participated in a 9-week isometric training regimen in elbow joint flexion of each arm. We randomly assigned two different training regimens to left and right arms: one aiming to strengthen maximal strength (ST) and the ot

Effects of isometric vs. dynamic resistance training on isometric and isokinetic muscular strength: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUNDS: Both isometric resistance training (ISO-RT) and dynamic resistance training (DYN-RT) are commonly used interventions to improve muscular strength. Unlike DYN-RT, which involves producing force through a joint range of motion, ISO-RT generates force without joint movement. However, their relative effectiveness for improving strength remains unclear, making it essential to clarify these differences to better guide exercise prescription across diverse populations and training goals. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review and a meta-analysis investigated the effects of ISO-RT versus a no

Semi-Automated Identification of Motor Units Concurrently Recorded in High-Density Surface and Intramuscular Electromyography.

An increasing focus on extending automated surface electromyography (EMG) decomposition algorithms to operate under non-stationary conditions requires rigorous and robust validation. However, relevant benchmarks derived manually from iEMG are laborsome to obtain and this is further exacerbated by the need to consider multiple contraction conditions. This work demonstrates a semi-automatic technique for extracting motor units (MUs) whose activities are present in concurrently recorded high-density surface EMG (HD-sEMG) and intramuscular EMG (iEMG) during isometric contractions. We leverage exis

Bilateral in vivo neuromechanical properties of the triceps surae and Achilles tendon in runners and triathletes.

Inter-limb differences in Achilles tendon mechanical, material and morphological properties have previously been described in non-athletes and attributed to the preferential use of a given limb. Achilles tendon overuse tendon injury generally initiate unilaterally and alters triceps surae activation and Achilles tendon properties. The investigation of inter-limb differences in muscle activation and tendon properties may provide directions for injury prevention in habitual runners. In this study triceps surae and Achilles tendon properties were investigated bilaterally in habitual runners durin

Isometric Contractility Measurement of the Mouse Mesenteric Artery Using Wire Myography.

The wire myograph technique is used to assess the contractility of vascular smooth muscles in response to depolarization, GPCR agonists/inhibitors and drugs. It is widely used in many studies on the physiological functions of vascular smooth muscle, the pathogenesis of vascular diseases such as hypertension, and the development of smooth muscle relaxant drugs. The mouse is a widely used model animal with a large pool of disease models and genetically modified strains. We introduced this method to measure the isometric contraction of mouse mesenteric artery in detail. A 1.4-mm segment of mouse
