Maternal exposure to air pollution during pregnancy and cortisol level in cord blood.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with disorders of the endocrine system and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis; however, the available evidence on these associations is still scarce. This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the association of exposure to PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, as well as traffic indicators (distance to major roads and total street length in different buffers around maternal residential address) during pregnancy with cortisol level in cord blood samples. This cross-sectional study was carried out based on 150 mother-newborn pairs in Sabzevar, Iran

Maternal and infant outcomes following exposure to quadrivalent human papillomavirus vaccine during pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: The Department of Defense encourages service members ≤26 years of age to receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Although this vaccine is not recommended in pregnancy, inadvertent vaccination may occur. The objective of this study was to assess whether active duty US military women who received the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (4vHPV) during pregnancy were at increased risk for adverse maternal or infant outcomes. METHODS: The study population included active duty US military women aged 17-28 years with at least one pregnancy between 2007 and 2014, and the infants resulting

Maternal cigarette smoke exposure disturbs glutamate/GABA balance in pFRG of neonatal rats.

We previously found that maternal cigarette smoke (CS) exposure resulted in impairment of central chemoreception and oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction of parafacial respiratory group (pFRG, a critical site for mammalian central chemoreception) in neonatal rats. The present work was carried out to identify if maternal CS exposure could disturb the glutamate (GLU)-ergic and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic balance in pFRG of neonatal rats. We found that maternal CS exposure induced a decrease in GLU content and consequently in GLU/GABA ratio in pFRG of neonatal rats. Maternal CS exp

Transgenerational associations between maternal childhood stress exposure and profiles of infant emotional reactivity.

Childhood exposure to stress can induce prolonged negative effects on health, which in turn confer risks for the next generation, but greater specificity is needed to inform intervention. A first step is to measure individual differences in emotional reactivity to stress early in life in ways that can account for heterogeneity in child exposure. The present study tested the hypothesis that mothers' childhood exposure to stress would be differentially associated with patterns of positive and negative emotional reactivity in their offspring, suggesting transmission of stress response across gene

Perinatal maternal antibiotic exposure augments lung injury in offspring in experimental bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

During the newborn period, intestinal commensal bacteria influence pulmonary mucosal immunology via the gut-lung axis. Epidemiological studies have linked perinatal antibiotic exposure in human newborns to an increased risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia, but whether this effect is mediated by the gut-lung axis is unknown. To explore antibiotic disruption of the newborn gut-lung axis, we studied how perinatal maternal antibiotic exposure influenced lung injury in a hyperoxia-based mouse model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We report that disruption of intestinal commensal colonization during t

Maternal exposure to CeO2NPs during early pregnancy impairs pregnancy by inducing placental abnormalities.

Cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) has been widely used in many fields, and also recommended as a promising carrier for cancer targeted drugs in human medicine for its excellent properties. However, its biological safety to human health remains controversial. In this study, we propose a mouse model exposed to CeO2NPs during early pregnancy, to clarify the effect of maternal CeO2NPs exposure and related molecular mechanism. Pregnant mice are injected intravenously with CeO2NPs by once a day on D5, D6, and D7. The effects of CeO2NPs exposure on pregnancy outcomes are observed on D8, D9, D10

Exposure to placental ischemia impairs postpartum maternal renal and cardiac function in rats.

Women with a history of preeclampsia (PE) have an increased risk to develop cardiovascular and renal diseases later in life, but the mechanisms underlying this effect are unknown. In rats, we assessed whether placental ischemia results in long-term effects on the maternal cardiovascular and renal systems using the reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) model for PE. Sprague-Dawley rats received either a Sham or RUPP operation at gestational day 14 The rats were followed for 8 wk after delivery (Sham n = 12, RUPP n = 21) at which time mean arterial pressure (MAP; conscious), 24-h albuminuria

Maternal exposure to di-2-ethylhexylphthalate and adverse delivery outcomes: A systematic review.

Adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm delivery, short gestational age, and abnormal birth weight, remain a public health concern. The evidence on the association of the most common phthalate, di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) with adverse pregnancy outcomes remains equivocal. This systematic review summarizes published studies that investigated the association of DEHP with preterm delivery, gestational age, and birthweight. A comprehensive literature search found 15 relevant studies, most of which evaluated more than one outcome (four studies for preterm delivery, nine studies for gesta

Maternal methylmercury exposure through rice ingestion and offspring neurodevelopment: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Dietary methylmercury intake can occur not only through fish ingestion but also through rice ingestion; however, rice does not contain the same beneficial micronutrients as fish. OBJECTIVES: In rural China, where rice is a staple food, associations between prenatal methylmercury exposure (assessed using maternal hair mercury) and impacts on offspring neurodevelopment were investigated. METHODS: A total of 398 mothers were recruited at parturition at which time a sample of scalp hair was collected. Offspring (n=270, 68%) were assessed at 12 months using the Bayley Scales of Infant

Maternal Fructose Exposure Programs Metabolic Syndrome-Associated Bladder Overactivity in Young Adult Offspring.

Maternal fructose exposure (MFE) programs the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in young adult offspring. Epidemiological data indicate that MetS may increase the risks of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. However, it remains unknown whether MFE programs MetS-associated bladder dysfunction in adult offspring. Using Sprague-Dawley rats, we investigated the effects of MFE during pregnancy and lactation on developmental programming of MetS-associated bladder dysfunction. In addition, next generation sequencing technology was used to identify potential transcripts involved in the programme

Adverse reproductive effects of maternal low-dose melamine exposure during pregnancy in rats.

Melamine is a heterocyclic, aromatic amine and nitrogen-enriched environmental toxicant, found in not only adulterated foodstuffs but also industrial household tableware and paints. Previous studies demonstrated adverse effects of high-dose melamine on human infants and pregnant animals, but effects of low-dose melamine on pregnancy have not been reported. In this study, reproductive effects of low-dose melamine were investigated in pregnant rats. Melamine in the range of 12.5-50 mg/kg was administered to pregnant rats at different gestational stages. Maternal weight gain was not significantly

Effects of maternal LPS exposure during pregnancy on metabolic phenotypes in female offspring.

It is increasingly recognized that intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders in late life. Previous studies showed that mice exposed to LPS in late gestation induced fetal IUGR. The present study investigated the effects of maternal LPS exposure during pregnancy on metabolic phenotypes in female adult offspring. Pregnant mice were intraperitoneally injected with LPS (50 µg/kg) daily from gestational day (GD)15 to GD17. After lactation, female pups were fed with standard-chow diets (SD) or high-fat diets (HFD). Glucose tolerance test (GT

Comparing factors associated with maternal and adolescent reports of adolescent traumatic event exposure.

Existing research indicates that there is very little agreement between youth and their parents on youth trauma exposure and subsequent treatment. Few studies, however, have attempted to examine factors that may contribute to this lack of agreement. This study addressed this gap by examining youth and maternal-reported youth traumatic event exposure using a sample of 100 urban, African American adolescent-maternal dyads. Cumulative report of youth potentially traumatic event exposure (57%) was higher than youth (41%) and maternal (27%) reports. Findings indicate that there was agreement for se

Maternal environmental exposure, infant GSTP1 polymorphism, and risk of isolated congenital heart disease.

The GSTP1 gene, highly expressed early in fetal life, is the most abundant phase 2 xenobiotic metabolism enzyme in a human placenta. Fetal inherited GSTP1 Ile105Val polymorphism may modify the metabolism and excretion of xenobiotics from fetal tissue and increase the risk of congenital heart disease (CHD). This study aimed to analyze the joint effects of GSTP1 genetic polymorphism (Ile105Val) and maternal environmental exposure on CHD risk. Within a case-control design, a total of 190 children with CHD (104 boys age 4 ± 5.6 years) and 190 healthy children (114 newborn boys) were genotyped for

High intra-uterine exposure to infliximab following maternal anti-TNF treatment during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Typically, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are in their reproductive years, raising questions about safely using antitumour necrosis factor antibodies like infliximab (IFX) during pregnancy. IgG antibodies naturally cross the placenta, especially during the last trimester. To prevent foetal intra-uterine exposure, stopping IFX treatment at gestational week 30 is recommended. However, whether this limits intra-uterine and early postnatal IFX exposure is unestablished. AIM: To determine the intra-uterine exposure to IFX following maternal treatment with IFX. METHODS: Four

Oral cleft defects and maternal exposure to ambient air pollutants in New Jersey.

BACKGROUND: Evidence links exposure to ambient air pollution during pregnancy, particularly gaseous pollutants and particulate matter, to an increased risk of adverse reproductive outcomes though the results for birth defects have been inconsistent. METHODS: We compared estimated exposure to ambient air pollutants during early pregnancy among mothers of children with oral cleft defects (cases) to that among mothers of controls, adjusting for available risk factors from birth certificates. We obtained ambient air pollutant data from air monitoring sites in New Jersey for carbon monoxide (CO),
