Epstein-Barr virus-associated smooth muscle tumors (EBV-SMT) are rare neoplasms seen in immunocompromised patients and may mimic posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD). We report a 19-year-old renal transplant recipient presenting with abdominal symptoms and suspected PTLD. 18 F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated multiple hypermetabolic liver lesions. Histopathology confirmed EBV-SMT. Follow-up PET/CT after immunosuppression with mTOR inhibition demonstrated partial metabolic response. This case highlights the role of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in detecting multifocal disease, guiding biopsy, differenti

Congenital bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) is a rare but significant cause of morbidity in pediatric otolaryngology. The differential diagnosis is expansive, with common etiologies including birth trauma, brainstem neoplasms, and neurologic disorders. There are few known genetic causes of the condition. This report details the first known case of BVFP secondary to a genetic deficiency in MYOD1, a master transcriptional regulator of skeletal muscle cell specification. Genetics consultation and testing may be a useful adjunct in the workup of congenital BVFP and may help guide prognosticat

Nodular fasciitis is an uncommon benign mass-forming myofibroblastic proliferation, most frequently found in the upper limbs, with only rare intramuscular cases. We describe herein a case of chronic nodular fasciitis of the left triceps muscle with a low Ga-labeled prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) ligand uptake on PET/CT. Ga-PSMA ligands bind to PSMA-expressing prostate cancer cells, but uptake has also been demonstrated in other solid neoplasms and various benign lesions. Nodular fasciitis should be included in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue lesions with variable Ga-PSMA u

Smooth muscle neoplasms of the vulva are rare, and when localized in the Bartholin's gland, it can be mistaken as a benign lesion leading to a delay in diagnosis. We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the Bartholin's gland in a 63-year-old postmenopausal woman, which clinically mimicked a chronic Bartholin's gland cyst. This case report emphasizes the importance of suspecting malignancy in any vulvar lesion in women of postmenopausal age, despite its location and asymptomatic appearance. A prompt, careful evaluation with adequate clinical judgment will help to manage such cases efficiently.

Benign triton tumors (neuromuscular hamartomas) are rare neoplasms composed of well-differentiated striated muscle fibers admixed with peripheral nerve fibers. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third case reported in the world literature of a benign triton tumor involving cranial nerve V (trigeminal nerve) and the first in the radiology literature. The previous reports of this lesion have focused on its unusual pathology and not on the imaging findings. In light of the imaging appearance of this lesion, we consider that the imaging findings may suggest this uncommon diagnosis.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, spindle-cell neoplasms generally associated with the serosal surface, especially the pleura. Histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and flow cytometric analyses were performed on seven SFTs of extrapleural sites (two retroperitoneal, two soft tissue, one each peritoneal, nasal cavity, and orbit). Five patients were women, and two were men, aged from 21 to 68 years (average, 39 yr). All of the lesions presented as well-circumscribed masses. The lesions ranged in size from 2 to 20 cm in greatest diameter. Histologically, these lesions were

In comparison with other rodents, the mastomys is unique as regards the patterns of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases that it develops, some of which may constitute suitable animal models for corresponding diseases of man. Among the spontaneous diseases commonly encountered in necropsies of 600 mastomys maintained in a closed colony were: (1) degenerative joint disease of diarthroses and interventricular disks, which develops regularly in the second year of life; (2) renal disease, a type of immune-complex glomerulonephritis, affecting approximately 80% of mastomys in the age bracket 18-3

Angiomyolipoma is a well described but relatively uncommon benign renal neoplasm composed of varying admixtures of mature adipose tissue, smooth muscle, and thick-walled blood vessels. The incidence of angiomyolipoma is about 0.3% overall. It frequently occurs in patients with tuberous sclerosis. Even more uncommon is the simultaneous occurrence of angiomyolipoma and renal cell cancer in the same kidney in a patient without tuberous sclerosis.

Muscular metastases are unusual. Primary neoplasm use to be breast or lung, although any neoplastic process can have muscular metastatic potential. The usual location in psoas and paravertebral muscles. For its diagnosis we need a high index of suspicion, and can be helpful, electromyography and magnetic nuclear resonance. The follow up of a patient with colon adenocarcinoma and muscular metastases and a review of the subject is presented.

Spindle cell hemangioma (SCH) is an uncommon tumor that usually presents as a subcutaneous or deep dermal nodule affecting the extremities of young people. It is primarily a benign vascular neoplasm with a tendency to recur locally. Reports describing SCH diagnosed in muscles, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and even in the spinal cord occasionally surface in the literature. We report a very rare case of SCH diagnosed in the lung.

BACKGROUND: Intracardiac leiomyomatosis (ICL) is a rare benign neoplasm of the smooth muscle in the uterus extending into the heart. Complete resection is difficult because of the extensive range.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of one-stage complete resection of a giant ICL with moderate hypothermia extracorporeal circulation and beating heart technique.
CONCLUSIONS: The outcome of 36 months follow-up was very good.

Rhabdomyomas are benign tumors in which at least some cells are differentiated as skeletal muscle cells with cytoplasmic cross-striations. Extracardiac adult rhabdomyoma is an extremely uncommon benign neoplasm that usually involves the head and neck region. Rare cases have been reported to involve other sites of the body including mediastinum. We report the fourth case of mediastinal adult rhabdomyoma.

Tarsal coalitions are not the sole cause of peroneal spastic flatfoot, and any irritative lesion in the peritalar area can induce protective contraction of any or all of the muscles bridging the peritalar joints. True muscular peroneal spasm has been shown to be present on a clinical basis in this entity where tarsal coalitions are not present. Neoplasm should be included in the differential diagnosis of the rigid flatfoot deformity.

Hepatic angiomyolipoma is a rare neoplasm that can be difficult to diagnose in cases of ecoguide biopsy. We studied 4 cases of female patients with a mean age of 51 years. None of the patients presented specific abdominal symptoms, or other tumour masses detected by chance. One of them had relevant personal history: Renal cell carcinoma. This same patient was diagnosed with a contralateral renal angiomyolipoma. None of the patients showed evidence of tuberous sclerosis. Three tumours have been diagnosed by biopsy and only in one patient was decided to completely remove the tumour surgically. N

INTRODUCTION: Myoepithelioma is a benign neoplasm of salivary glands, represents 1.5 % of all salivary glands neoplasm. The plasmacytoid myoepithelioma from palate salivary glands is considered as a rare entity, at date it has been reported 14 cases. It is present one case of plasmacytoid myoepithelioma of palate.
CASE REPORT: A Hispanic female of 28 years old presented a not-ulcerate, painless ovoid swelling at left side of hard palate with a one year and a half of evolution. An excisional biopsy was done. The sample was fixed at 10% buffer formalin, embedded in paraffin, cuts at 5 micron an

OBJECTIVE: To describe in detail the diagnosis and clinical course of an unselected population-based cohort of patients with newly diagnosed bladder neoplasms.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 538 patients registered in the Stockholm region with newly diagnosed primary bladder neoplasms (transitional cell carcinomas) in 1995 and 1996 were followed for at least 5 years. All hospitals and urology units in the region participated in the study. Treatment and follow-up were performed according to a standard-of-care programme. Routine pathological reports were used. Original case records were scrut

Atypical nodular hidradenoma is an uncommon adnexal neoplasm arising from eccrine sweat glands, with histological features intermediate between benign hidradenoma and hidradenocarcinoma. These tumors are rarely encountered in the head and neck region, particularly in the postauricular area, posing significant diagnostic challenges because of their nonspecific clinical and radiological appearance. We report the case of a 55-year-old male presenting with a slowly progressive postauricular swelling of four years' duration. Imaging demonstrated a well-defined, enhancing subcutaneous lesion without

The cases of eighteen patients who were treated for pyomyositis between 1970 and 1988 were evaluated. The diagnosis was often delayed because other primary diagnoses were considered, including muscle strain, synovitis, thrombophlebitis, and neoplasm, and because the symptoms were vague and prolonged (maximum duration, one year). The muscles around the hip and thigh were most commonly involved (twelve patients), and Staphylococcus aureus most commonly grew on culture (twelve patients). Computed tomography aided in the accurate diagnosis of the infection and of the extent of involvement. Incisio

Motor neuron diseases have been reported as a rare paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) of a systemic neoplasm. We present a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in association with neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of stomach, which is the first case of motor neuronopathy with underlying neuroendocrine tumor. A 79-year old woman presented with a two months history of progressive dysphagia, spastic dysarthria and marked fasciculation in her atrophic tongue. Gag reflexes were diminished bilaterally. Other cranial nerves were intact. In muscle testing there was significant atrophy in thenar and hy

Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) were used to evaluate the carcinogenicity of a complex groundwater that contained 5 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency priority pollutant heavy metals and 13 chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons. A test protocol that used 10 mg/L diethylnitrosamine (DEN) prior to groundwater exposure was designed to assess both initiation and promotion. The fish were exposed continuously for 9 mo with 0, 1, 5, or 25% groundwater, by volume, with either West Branch of Canal Creek water (Aberdeen Proving Ground-Edgewood Area, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD) or dechlorinated tap wat
