Otodental syndrome, oculo-facio-cardio-dental (OFCD) syndrome, and lobodontia: dental disorders of interest to the pediatric radiologist.

Three unusual dental anomalies are presented which should be of interest to the pediatric radiologist: otodental syndrome - an autosomal dominant syndrome of bizarre, greatly enlarged teeth with bulbous crowns (globodontia) that spares the incisors, in combination with sensorineural hearing loss; oculo-facio-cardio-dental syndrome - an X-linked dominant syndrome that is lethal in males, characterized by congenital cataracts, unusual facies, atrial septal defect (ASD), ventricular septal defect (VSD), and canine teeth that cease to grow only when they cut off their own blood supply by growing t

Aesthetic tooth modification for patients with cleft lip and palate.

Alongside orthodontic treatment, tooth shape modification may be indicated for teeth associated with clefts of the lip and alveolus, and in non-carious teeth, minimal tooth preparation techniques appear to be most appropriate. Two methods of tooth shape modification are described. In one, hybrid composite materials, bonded to tooth enamel using the acid-etch technique, may be considered to provide a permanent, low cost, aesthetically satisfactory result, often without tooth preparation and with minimal operating time. Alternatively, indirect veneers may be appropriate for treatment of more sev

Dental anomaly pattern (DAP): agenesis of mandibular second premolar, distal angulation of its antimere and delayed tooth formation.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypotheses that children with unilateral agenesis of the mandibular second premolar (MnP2) do not show (1) greater distal angulation of the unerupted antimere and (2) delayed tooth formation compared with children without agenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 38 patients with unilateral aplasia of MnP2 were retrospectively examined and compared to a non-agenesic control group of 82 patients. Ages ranged from 8 to 15 years. Contralateral mandibular deciduous second molars were present for all participants. Each unerupted MnP2 was traced, and its

A possible association between early apical resorption of primary teeth and ectodermal characteristics of the permanent dentition.

The hypothesis of this study is that children with unexpected early apical resorption of the primary teeth are also predisposed to resorption in the permanent dentition. Accordingly, the aim was to perform a longitudinal study focussing on the permanent teeth in children with unexpected early apical resorption in the primary dentition. Panoramic radiographs of 12 children (7 boys and 5 girls) aged 6 years 4 months to 8 years 9 months with unexpected early apical resorption of primary teeth were identified from a dental archive of 588 patients. After written request, follow-up radiographs were

Assessment of parameters affecting the presence of the central papilla using a non-invasive radiographic method.

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to assess the relationship between radiopaque landmarks and central papilla presence and height. The probability of the presence of a central papilla has been related to the bone crest-contact point distance. Papilla height has been measured by inserting a dental probe under local anesthesia, but this method is invasive. It would be desirable to assess the influence of other dental landmarks on the presence and height of the papilla and to use a non-invasive method for measurement of papilla height that is simple, accurate, and accepted readily by patients.

A study of transposed canines in a sample of orthodontic patients.

Tooth transposition is a positional interchange of two adjacent teeth. The most commonly transposed tooth is the permanent canine with either the first premolar or lateral incisor. The records of 54 subjects with transposed canines, both maxillary and mandibular, were collected. Pretreatment study models of these subjects were matched with a similar number of models from unaffected individuals. Bucco-lingual and mesio-distal tooth widths, arch depth and arch width were measured on each model. Thirty-four subjects (63 per cent) were female. Thirty-seven (68.5 per cent) of the cases involved the

Differential growth among components of the palate in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

To understand the etiology of maxillary hypoplasia better, which is common in individuals with cleft palate and other craniofacial anomalies, the relative growth and contribution of the maxillary and palatine segments to enlargement of the hard palate was examined in rhesus monkeys. The purpose of the study was to identify and evaluate sites of differential growth of the palatine and maxillary segments as they contribute to the development of the midface and facial prognathism. One hundred and eight male and 107 female skulls ranging from 1.0 to 7.0 years of age were examined. Measurements of
