Examining Multimorbidity in Older Adults Living in Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities, in Ontario, Canada, Using Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity, ≥ 2 chronic conditions as per the World Health Organization, can complicate aging in place and lead to earlier transitions to nursing homes. To inform supportive service intervention planning in naturally occurring retirement communities (NORCs), which are areas where large proportions of older adults reside, we examined clustering patterns of specific chronic conditions among NORC residents. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of a population-based cohort of community-dwelling NORC residents aged ≥ 66 years as of January 1, 2022, in Ontario, Canada. A

Joint trajectories of physical activity, health, and income before and after statutory retirement: A 22-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Health behaviors, health, and income change during aging. However, no previous studies have examined, how they develop together over the transition to statutory retirement. We aimed to examine their joint development and to identify the determinants of any distinct trajectories. METHODS: We studied former employees of the City of Helsinki, Finland, who transitioned to full statutory retirement between 2000 and 2022 (n = 5209, 80% women). We examined five repeated questionnaire surveys to identify any joint developmental patterns in the key indicators of healthy aging and well-bein

Association of childhood health with adulthood chronic kidney disease: results from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse Childhood Experiences have been well-documented as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adulthood. However, the link between childhood health and adulthood CKD risk is still unclear. This study aimed to explore the connection between childhood health and the likelihood of developing CKD in adulthood. METHODS: Participants were drawn from the third wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The CKD was identified based on the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) and self-reported doctor-diagnosed kidney disease. Childhood health

Association between sarcopenia and falls in Chinese older adults: Findings from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

Falling has become a significant factor in the mortality of elderly people. Little is known about whether sarcopenia can be a risk factor for falls in older adults. This study aims to assess the association between sarcopenia and falls among older Chinese according to the updated diagnostic guidelines of the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019). We used data from the 2011 baseline and 2015 follow-up survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). This study examined the relationship between sarcopenia status and falls through cross-sectional analysis. Cox p

Associations of 24-h Movement Behaviors With Incidence of Cardiovascular Risk Factors: The Finnish Retirement and Aging Study.

Low physical activity, high sedentary time (SED), and inadequate sleep increase cardiovascular disease risk, but the codependency between these 24-h movement behaviors has often been neglected. This study examined associations between 24-h movement behaviors and incidence of cardiovascular risk factors. The study included 866 adults (mean age 62.4 years, SD 1.1) from the Finnish Retirement and Aging study who participated in wrist-accelerometry measurements between 2014 and 2018. Incident register-based cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, and ques

Improved asthma outcomes observed in the vicinity of coal power plant retirement, retrofit, and conversion to natural gas.

Coal-fired power plants release substantial air pollution, including over 60% of U.S. sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in 2014. Such air pollution may exacerbate asthma however direct studies of health impacts linked to power plant air pollution are rare. Here, we take advantage of a natural experiment in Louisville, Kentucky, where one coal-fired power plant retired and converted to natural gas, and three others installed SO2 emission control systems between 2013 and 2016. Dispersion modeling indicated exposure to SO2 emissions from these power plants decreased after the energy transitions. We

Independent Associations Between Sedentary Behaviors and Mental, Cognitive, Physical, and Functional Health Among Older Adults in Retirement Communities.

BACKGROUND: We examined the relationships between objective and self-reported sedentary time and health indicators among older adults residing in retirement communities. METHODS: Our cross-sectional analysis used data from 307 participants who completed baseline measurements of a physical activity trial in 11 retirement communities in San Diego County. Sedentary time was objectively measured with devices (accelerometers) and using self-reports. Outcomes assessed included emotional and cognitive health, physical function, and physical health (eg, blood pressure). Linear mixed-effects models ex

Frailty and depressive symptoms multitrajectories with cognitive function in couples: Findings from the China health and retirement longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Both frailty and depressive symptoms are concurrently associated with the decline in cognitive function. Most existing studies have focused on individual-level analyses rather than dyadic investigations among couples. This study aims to explore the longitudinal developmental patterns of frailty and depressive symptoms in couples and further examine cognitive function trajectories across these distinct multitrajectory groups. METHODS: Based on longitudinal data of 5828 couples from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020, group-based trajectory modeling

Perceived Neighborhood Cohesion Across the Life Course and Late-Life Friendship: Evidence From the U.S. Health and Retirement Study.

How does neighborhood cohesion across the life course shape late-life friendship? Using longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study, this study examines how neighborhood cohesion in childhood, midlife, and late life influences structural, behavioral, and affective dimensions of friendship in older adulthood. Marginal structural generalized estimating equations models estimate independent and cumulative effects across life stages. Neighborhood cohesion at all three stages is independently associated with a greater number of close friends and stronger perceived support. The associatio

Adaptive immune cells and kidney function in older adults: sex-specific associations in the health and retirement study (HRS).

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by chronic inflammation and immune dysregulation. Aging of the adaptive immune system, marked by a shift from naïve to memory T-cell phenotypes, is associated with systemic "inflammaging", but sex-specific associations between these immunophenotypes and kidney function in older adults remain poorly understood. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 8,970 participants (aged ≥56 years) in the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) Venous Blood Study. Seventeen adaptive immune cell subsets were quantified using multiparameter flow

Psychiatric or psychological treatment of depression in older adults and subsequent risk of dementia: Health and Retirement Study2012-2020.

Depression is an established risk factor for dementia. However, it is unclear whether initiating psychiatric/psychological treatment of depression, particularly early initiation of such treatment, may reduce risk of dementia. We examined associations between initiation and immediate initiation of psychiatric/psychological treatment and subsequent risk of dementia in older adults. Participants aged ≥60 years from the Health and Retirement Study from 2012 to 2018 with self-reported newly diagnosed depression but no history of dementia were included and followed up through 2020. Approaching 65 Years: Is It Time to Consider Retirement of Vancomycin for Treating Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Endovascular Infections?

Vancomycin was introduced nearly 65 years ago and remains the standard antibiotic for serious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. Staphylococcus aureus remains highly susceptibility to vancomycin (>97%). Despite this, MRSA treatment failure with vancomycin is high in complicated bacteremia. Additionally, vancomycin can cause nephrotoxicity, leading to new therapeutic drug monitoring guidance. This demonstrates how difficult it is to dose vancomycin in a way that is both efficacious and safe, especially during long courses of therapy. Often underappreciated are the co

Childhood adversity and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese: results from China health and retirement longitudinal study.

Objectives: A number of studies have established the link between childhood adversity (CA) and depression across the life span. This association can be culturally specific, and it remains unclear whether and how different aspects of CA affect depressive symptoms in later life in non-Western societies.Method: Data were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2011, 2013, 2014 (Life Event History survey) and 2015 (N = 13,710). Depressive symptoms were measured repeatedly in 2011, 2013, and 2015 using the ten-item Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10). CA

[Desire for early retirement and therapy of chronic back pain: relevance of social medical variables for outpatient psychotherapeutic treatment].

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the influence of patients' desire for early retirement on the success of an outpatient cognitive behavioural treatment (CBT) in patients with chronic back pain. Previous studies have shown that the desire for early retirement and social compensation had a negative influence on therapy outcome, e.g. pain intensity and pain disability. This study was conducted to reassess whether these results can be replicated in an outpatient CBT setting. METHOD: Questionnaires assessing pain-related variables were issued to a total of 116 patients at the beginning, at the
