Self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as cervical cancer screening option. Experience from the LAMS study.

PURPOSE: To compare Hybrid Capture II (HC2) in detecting high-risk (HR) HPV in patient-collected vaginal samples with those obtained using gynaecologist collected samples. METHODS: Patients were submitted to Pap smears, visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and HC2 for hr-HPV. RESULTS: A total of 1,081 HC2 tests for HR-HPV were performed: 770 (71.2%) samples were collected by a physician and 311 (28.8%) were self-collected by the patients. In detecting any cervical lesion, the sensitivity of HC2 collected by a physician was higher (92.86%) than that (37.5%) in the self-sampling group. Neg

'Urine testing is a waste of time': newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes patients' perceptions of self-monitoring.

AIMS: To date, there is no convincing evidence that non-insulin treated patients who undertake self-blood glucose monitoring (SBGM) have better glycaemic control than those who test their urine. This has led to a recommendation that non-insulin dependent patients undertake urine testing, which is the cheaper option. This recommendation does not take account of patients' experiences and views. This study explores the respective merits of urine testing and SBGM from the perspectives of newly diagnosed patients with Type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Qualitative study using repeat in-depth interviews wit

Tension-free vaginal tape evaluated using patient self-reports and urodynamic testing--a two-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Urinary incontinence entails both reduced quality of life for many women and considerable public expense. Compared with other methods aimed at alleviating incontinence, tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) is minimally invasive, can be performed under local anaesthesia and results in less morbidity and shorter hospitalization. The present study was carried out to evaluate early and late complications and as a 2-year follow-up after surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 1996-98, 75 women underwent TVT sling plasty; mean time for surgery was 39 min and for hospitalization 24 h. The procedure

A protocol for developing a digital-based education and self-screening model to enhance HIV knowledge, self-awareness, and testing uptake among adolescents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Adolescents remain a critical population in the global human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic, particularly in low - and middle-income countries such as Indonesia, where testing uptake and awareness among youth remain low. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a peer-supported, digital-based HIV education and self-screening intervention tailored for adolescents in Yogyakarta. By integrating digital technology with peer-led support, the intervention addresses stigma-related barriers, limited access to youth-friendly services, and low health literacy. Using a mixed-methods research and d

At-Home Specimen Self-Collection and Self-Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening Demand Accelerated by the COVID-19 Pandemic: a Review of Laboratory Implementation Issues.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic reduced the sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing volume due to social-distancing and stay-at-home orders, among other reasons. These events highlighted previously known benefits of at-home STI self-testing or specimen self-collection and accelerated testing demand via telemedicine. We review testing outside traditional clinical settings. We focus on three curable bacterial STIs among the top 10 U.S. nationally notifiable conditions with screening recommendations: syphilis, gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also known as the gonococcus [G

Implications of HIV Self-Testing for Other Sexually Transmissible Infection Testing and Broader Sexual Health Needs: A Mixed-Methods Study of Gay and Bisexual Men in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV self-tests can support frequent HIV testing, their impact on attending clinics for other sexually transmissible infection (STI) testing and sexual health care is largely unknown. We explored intentions to use HIV self-tests and how this might affect patterns of attending sexual health services among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in Victoria, Australia. METHODS: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men self-completed an online survey between March 10 and June 10, 2019. Among GBM reporting lifetime HIV testing and intentions to self-

Validation of Rapid Point-of-Care Diagnostic Tests for Sexually Transmitted Infection Self-Testing Among Adolescent Girls and Young Women.

Background/Objectives: High rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increase HIV transmission risk among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa. AGYW prefer discreet self-testing options for HIV and pregnancy; however, other STI self-testing options are currently unavailable in this region. Methods: Seven Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhea (NG) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) assays were validated for AGYW self-test use (using self-collected vaginal samples) in a cross-sectional study (PROVE). Paired GeneXpert® NG/CT (Cepheid®, Sunnyvale, CA, USA) and OSOM®

Acceptability and outcomes of distributing HIV self-tests for male partner testing in Kenyan maternal and child health and family planning clinics.

BACKGROUND: Providing HIV self-tests to women for distribution to male partners may provide a unique opportunity to increase male partner and couples testing among women in HIV high-burden settings. METHODS: Between November 2017 and June 2018, we offered self-tests for at-home couples or partner HIV testing to HIV-uninfected women seeking routine maternal and child health and family planning services at eight facilities in Kisumu, Kenya. Women accepting self-tests were offered at least two self-tests (OraQuick) to take to their partner(s) with instructions on use. HIV self-testing (HIVST) ou

Identification and Assessment of Drug-User Groups Among Nightlife Attendees: Self-Reports, Breathalyzer-Tests and Oral Fluid Drug Tests.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Even though nightlife studies with potentially intoxicated participants provide the much needed information on drug use, they face additional methodological challenges. This study aimed to explore the utility of such studies by (i) classifying nightlife attendees based on their self-reported drug use and by (ii) examining whether these classifications were meaningful when assessed against other sources of data, including oral fluid drug tests. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaires, oral fluid samples and blood alcohol concentration readings were collected in a sampl

Triage of Women Testing Positive With the careHPV Test on Self-Collected Vaginal Samples for Cervical Cancer Screening in a Low-Resource Setting.

PURPOSE: Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA screening reduces cervical cancer incidence and mortality in low-resource settings. Self-collected vaginal samples tested with affordable HPV tests such as careHPV can increase the rate of screening in resource-constrained settings. We report the role of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) as a triage test for women testing positive with the careHPV test on self-collected vaginal samples. METHODS: As part of a multicountry demonstration study, 5,207 women 30 to 49 years of age were recruited from urban slums to undergo four cervical screening tests

'Too old to test?': A life course approach to HIV-related risk and self-testing among midlife-older adults in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Despite the aging HIV epidemic, increasing age can be associated with hesitancy to test. Addressing this gap is a critical policy concern and highlights the urgent need to identify the underlying factors, to improve knowledge of HIV-related risks as well as uptake of HIV testing and prevention services, in midlife-older adults. METHODS: We conducted five focus group discussions and 12 in-depth interviews between April 2013 and November 2016 among rural and urban Malawian midlife-older (≥30 years) men and women. Using a life-course theoretical framework we explored how age is enact

Testing a social network approach to promote HIV self-testing and linkage to care among fishermen at Lake Victoria: study protocol for the Owete cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 50% of men living with HIV in many countries are unaware of their HIV status; men also have lower uptake of HIV treatment and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). In SSA, highly mobile men such as those working in fishing communities alongside Lake Victoria have low uptake of HIV testing and low rates of linkage to HIV treatment and PrEP, despite increasing availability of these services. HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits hold promise for overcoming barriers to HIV testing and linkage to services for HIV-positive and HIV-negative men. We describe here a protocol for an HIV status-ne

Comparing the Effects of Oral HIV Self-Testing With Those of Standard HIV Testing for Men Who Have Sex With Men (MSM): A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The WHO recommends HIV self-testing (HIVST) as an innovative strategy and an additional testing approach to attain UNAIDS targets to end HIV by 2030. HIVST is a process whereby a person collects his or her own specimen (either oral fluid or blood), performs an HIV test, and interprets the result. It has been described as a discreet and convenient way to reach the hidden, unreached key populations (KPs) who do not know their HIV status or do not get tested. Among the KPs, men who have sex with men (MSM) is one such group that by far remains hidden due to feared stigma and discrimination associa
