Portland cement induces human periodontal ligament cells to differentiate by upregulating miR-146a.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bioaggregates such as Portland cement (PC) can be an economical alternative for mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) with additional benefit of less discoloration. MTA has been known to induce differentiations of several dental cells. MicroRNAs are important regulators of biological processes, including differentiation, physiologic homeostasis, and disease progression. This study is to explore how PC enhances the differentiation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells in microRNAs level. METHODS: PDL cells were cultured in a regular PC- or MTA-conditioned medium or an osteoinducti

Durability and mechanical behaviour of dual-sourced fly ash geopolymer concrete under aggressive environment.

As the need for infrastructure development increases with a growing population, the dependence on cement consumption is rising, leading to a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into the atmosphere. This study investigates the mechanical performance, durability behaviour, and environmental benefits of ambient-cured geopolymer concrete (GPC) based on fly ash for infrastructure exposed to aggressive marine environments. A dual-source fly ash binder was activated using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) solutions, and specimens were exposed to coupled chloride-sulphat

A Parameterized Lifecycle Assessment of Ex Situ CO2 Mineralization, Using Olivine as a Case Study.

To achieve global climate goals, novel technologies are needed to efficiently capture and durably store atmospheric CO2. Reacting CO2 with silicate minerals in engineered systems, often called ex situ mineralization, is one such approach. The potential net climate benefit of ex situ CO2 mineralization is unclear, however, as it depends on the technology pathway, location, energy and resource demands, and potential for avoided emissions via co-product utilization. Accurately quantifying these factors in site-specific scenarios is critical for assessing a project's carbon footprint. Here, we pre

Root perforations: a review of diagnosis, prognosis and materials.

Root perforation results in the communication between root canal walls and periodontal space (external tooth surface). It is commonly caused by an operative procedural accident or pathological alteration (such as extensive dental caries, and external or internal inflammatory root resorption). Different factors may predispose to this communication, such as the presence of pulp stones, calcification, resorptions, tooth malposition (unusual inclination in the arch, tipping or rotation), an extra-coronal restoration or intracanal posts. The diagnosis of dental pulp and/or periapical tissue previou
